What careers sound good on paper nightmare in reality and what sounds nightmare on paper good in reality.

On paper teaching sounds great, all those weeks off. Weekends off working in primary schools sounds fun secondary schools you can specialise in a subject you prefer. Reality grading lesson plans admin alot of work not enough pay.
Firefighters and police sounds fun reality dangerous.
In paper admin or reception jobs sounds boring and tedious paper work. But some have great hours and good work life balance.
In your opinion what jobs aren't worth the hype?

Crew in Live Music industry. Everyone thinks it’s a non stop party full of groupies and drugs but in reality it’s 20 hour shifts, lots of sitting around waiting and terrible job security.

you do get to travel a lot but usually too tired to enjoy it much.

And yet it's the non stop party image that would really put me off rather than sitting around.

Thanks all.
It's still law but I'd be going from PI to Property / Landlord & Tenant. My friend who recommended it moved there from PI and is very happy. It's a very small team that is expected to grow quickly. I think it has a lot of potential for moving up, I think the slightly lower salary would be pretty temporary.

Sent you a pm.

I'm also a Solicitor (litigation) and at the moment doing some document review work on the side for extra cash and honestly it's such an easy relaxed job I would definitely do it full time! It's ridiculously simple, working from home, no responsibility or stress whatsoever and you get paid weekly.

Feetupteashot · 05/12/2022 21:27

I think being a PA to someone decent would be great

Gp full time is impossible

Rainbowshit · 05/12/2022 21:34

Actuary. The classic joke is it's for people who thought accountancy was too exciting.

In reality it's very well paid. Interesting and intellectually challenging and hugely flexible around family life.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 05/12/2022 21:39

I'm being Mrs Claus in a Santa's Grotto atm. Lots of people would hate it, I imagine, but I'm really enjoying it. A constant turnover of small, cute, appreciative audience members!

Ohh @XelaM 😀sounds intriguing (I'm a private client solicitor) ...tell me more about this!!

I've got the contract and stuff through. I'm going to give notice tomorrow. I am very nervous about it. Yesterday my boss was talking to me about their recruitment crisis and how lucky they are to have me. He's a lovely man and I know it's going to cause him a big problem.

Good luck. Just give notice. It’s easier to explain in a way as you are looking for a new challenge in a new area of law. Have you got a 3m notice?

InPraiseOfBacchus · 08/12/2022 11:07

I consider myself quite a fun person, and I love my boring admin job! But then it's linked with mental health so no two days are ever the same, and there's the added feeling of even the full stuff being worthwhile. I recommend it!

You aren’t leaving them in lurch them. I’m sure it will be fine, it’s readily understood why Solicitors are leaving PI. You have time to hand over etc.

SleeplessInEngland · 08/12/2022 11:41

Enjoyable thread, although it's making me realise how few professions I ever thought sounded good in the first place. Surely no-one still thinks teaching seems like an easy, well-paid career?

Buteverythingsfine · 08/12/2022 12:03

@MadameSzyszkoBohusz presumably seasonal, sounds great fun!

Janieread · 08/12/2022 12:06

Vet. Awful work load and dealing with very sick animals and often clueless and aggressive owners.

Hoppinggreen · 08/12/2022 12:07

I know a few funeral directors.
They are lovely people, quite jolly and not short of money either

minipie · 08/12/2022 12:07

@XelaM I would also like the details please (ex litigator of many years, currently SAHM but could do with a bit of work)

Oysterbabe · 12/12/2022 17:57

I handed my notice in on Friday and they are losing their minds. They've asked me what I need from them to stay, said they have a blank page and anything will be considered. They have suggested a salary increase, a lump sum bonus, smaller caseload, a change of teams if I'd prefer a different one, anything else I can think of. They've scheduled a meeting for Wednesday.
I'm just not convinced any good will come of staying because they talked me into it.

Years ago I was given a major pay rise to convince me stay in my job which consisted of eat, sleep, work, repeat. I thought the money would mitigate the stress. It didn’t. I left a year later and took a pay cut in doing so. When it’s time to go, it’s time to go.

I’d think about your reasons for going. Realistically if it’s pi it’s not going to improve it’s only going to get worse in current climate.
I suspect nothing will change and you’ll kick yourself.
I’d listen to offer and say you’ll consider it and get back to them by x date.

Dionysiana · 12/12/2022 20:03

Nobody’s mentioned translation yet. The only preconception I’m aware of is that everyone automatically thinks of novels, and I don’t know if people would generally think it was an awful or a good job.
I translate academic research in quite a niche area. I get sent mainly interesting stuff, although there are some howlers too, obviously. It’s a bit like playing word games all day, plus learning random facts along the way, with the added bonus of (hopefully) keeping dementia at bay. Self-employed but not too much paperwork or stress. Lovely, appreciative clients. It’s my third career and the only one I’ve stuck at happily for more than 10 years. WFH is very compatible with having a happy dog, too!

My mum has been a translator her whole life (now in her 60's - German/Russian mainly). You have to have a lot of patience and attention to detail. I couldn't do it. I speak German and Russian fluently as well, but could never have the patience to ensure that translations are exactly correct like my mum does.

It speaks volumes @Oysterbabe that your current employer is willing to go to great lengths to retain you. But why have they not done everything possible to make you feel valued or looked after your work life balance until now? I think that is their problem. And I agree with @Dixiechickonhols comments.
