To wonder if whole class parties are a real 'thing'?

Where do these happen? How do these happen?

It seems on mumsnet to be the norm for small children to have whole class parties in nursery/reception etc, but I haven't actually experienced this happening. I live in inner London so wonder if that's something to do with it?

I'd love it if this were a 'thing' but my daughter has a summer birthday so I can't try and set a trend or anything.

What is the norm for kids parties at your young kids' nursery or primary?

It's the norm where we are, when the child is turning 5.

My daughter is in P1, but she goes to a school where there are only 49 pupils in total from P1-P7.
Her class is P1,2 and 3 combined which totals 20 kids. We are inviting all 20 to her party this weekend and because it is such a small school/village my daughter also knows quite a few of the older siblings of people in her class. We have invited 29 children in total, but the local hall is only £50 all day hire so it's pretty easy done.

I won't be doing this every year though! 🤦‍♀️

DS will be 5 in April and will be having a full class party. He has around 20 children in his class and we'll be inviting a few from the other reception class who he liked in nursery. We will be hiring the local soft play area which is only £150 and we supply food.

I did the same for my eldest when he was in reception and it was really good. It was actually an after school party 5-7 and everyone turned up! No idea why I chose that because I definitely wouldn't now!

Primary 1 and 2 - we had a party nearly every second weekend to go to.

It was relentlessly a real thing.

Yup. They missed out due to covid, felt compelled to go.

Yep, the norm here. I'd say from nursery (at a school) until year 2. Then they pretty much disappeared.
I reckon London does have something to do with it. Round here you can hire a hall dirt cheap - less than £40 quid. In fact I'm sure one place was more like £20!

I think it varies hugely!

Three kids. Eldest year 8. Middle Year 5. Youngest Year 3. So around 20 cumulative years of school. In that fine we’ve had one who class party - which was for my youngest the summer just gone.

Time and whole 🤦‍♀️

Ds has started reception this year and we've only had 1 party invitation out of a dual-class of 60 between September and Christmas.

So either he's been singled out for some reason (I hope not!!) or maybe post Covid/cost of living crisis is making people want to do something smaller.

I could have written this, the only difference is I have a DD. The one party DD attended was not a whole class party - in fact most of the children were old friends from nursery who go to other schools.

Lullabies2Paralyze · 18/11/2022 11:32

me and my sister did. This was the 90’s though. Just in the reception Year. The whole class was invited. I think most of them came too. We had it at a big soft play place. for some kids it was possibly the only birthday party they ever went to

birthdays then on were tea parties at home with family and one or 2 close friends/kids in the street sort of things.

youcantry · 18/11/2022 11:49

Yes, I always invited the whole class from reception to about yr3. I had 62 children at my daughters 6th birthday, two weeks after I'd given birth to her brother. The bloody party bags went up and down my living room, thankfully my wonderful mum came and helped me fill them!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/11/2022 11:56

It’s in the infant classes.

Some kids will have skipped that whole phase due to Covid though
