Are you a washing machine designer?

Can anybody explain to me WHY the little drain thing for the filter pump is located so ridiculously low to the ground? I have just accessed this helpful tip from my manufacturer's website.

Step 6: Place a suitable bowl below the drain pump access to collect the water that flows out.

Considering the drain pump access is about 5mm from the ground, where can I get one of these magic gravity defying bowls?

They include a helpful illustration of a miniscule tray, which would have to be emptied approximately 93y7973897987 times during the draining process.

Why? WHY?

Try a baking tray. Shallow enough but hold enough.

flowerycurtain · 15/11/2022 20:50

YES!!!! I have this problem too. As a farmer our washing machine gets an inordinate amount of use. We've been encouraging DS into different careers than farming and I reckon he'd make MILLIONS designing a washing
Machine with an easy to change filter!

Purplepepsi · 15/11/2022 20:51

Roasting tin here!

Devoutspoken · 15/11/2022 20:51

Gravity? Lowest point?

Mañanarama · 15/11/2022 20:52

I use a dustpan.

chineapplepunks · 15/11/2022 20:53

The other day I saw someone on tik tok say she would put a couple of nappies under it! Haven't tried it but it could work?

minipie · 15/11/2022 20:53

Baking tray here.

Guessing it needs to be low because…er… water flows down not up??

Flapjackquack · 15/11/2022 20:55

I hate the stupid little drainage tube as well. Mine fell back inside the washing machine once, took a whole afternoon to get it back out!

Oysterbabe · 15/11/2022 20:59

Why don't I know what any of you are talking about? Is there some kind of washing machine maintenance I'm supposed to be doing?

hidingmyusername · 15/11/2022 21:02

Even worse in our house. It's integrated so we have to remove the whole 4 m long plinth to get T the drain 😂

TheRookie · 15/11/2022 21:03

I usually put a thick towel down and a baking tray, I've never found that much water comes out.

Same! My kickboard is now super loose from being moved regularly. I just use towels then wash them that’s been the easiest solution for me so far.

motleymop · 15/11/2022 21:08

I am always surprised that one of the manufacturers hasn't come up with a better way than that madness- it would be a selling point.

I can imagine trying to pick that up full of water, with my doddery shakes

Straight on the floor!

Me too. I'm so confused by this. What is everyone talking about??

Itisbetter · 15/11/2022 21:15

@bellac11 just drop a towel in it before you pick it up. You’re not far from the washing machine.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 15/11/2022 21:27

I have 3 super absorbent sponges that I've had for over 20 years. They are brilliant for catching drips when you can only get a shallow container into the space but you need more capacity than the container's got. Over the years I have used them for defrosting the freezer, cleaning out the last of the water in the dishwasher well before a deep clean, putting under suspect leaks, giving to plumbers to use instead of old towels which just get sodden quickly, and loads more I can't remember now. The particular ones I have don't seem to be available any more but this www.therange.co.uk/household/washing-up/dishcloths-and-sponges/sponges/super-absorbent-sph2onge/ looks as if it's the same thing.

abblie · 15/11/2022 21:36

I get a towel and fold it up a few times and tuck it under works a treat

Hohofortherobbers · 15/11/2022 21:38

Oh my! So many good suggestions! I did this today and just soaked towels. Why didn't I think of a roasting tray???!

FightingFatAt49 · 15/11/2022 21:46

I also don't know what you're all talking about 😳
I've had 3 washing machines over the past 20 years living in this house and I've never emptied water from the bottom.

PinkButtercups · 15/11/2022 21:52

I use an old baking tray.

BertieBotts · 15/11/2022 21:56

Well normally you only have to drain it there if it's gone wrong but when they do, what a pain! You are also meant to clean the filter but given that mine never seems to be dirty even when it does go wrong I don't usually bother. The dishwasher on the other hand, the needy thing needs cleaning about every three washes.

I obviously understand that it needs to be at the bottom but you'd think a couple of centimetres higher wouldn't cause that much difficulty but would make this part so much easier.

In some countries they have a drain in the kitchen/bathroom floor but not here sadly.

I will look up that sponge, it looks ace. (That's sad isn't it? Grin)

How can you use a dustpan? Doesn't the water just flow out again?

OP posts:
Ollybob · 15/11/2022 22:01

It's a nightmare if you have to drain all the water out because there's a stupid hair bobble wrapped around the filter so it wont drain and so you need to empty the water out the machine that is halfway up the door out of this little hatch!
Baking trays don't cut it, I did used to have to use 3 bath sheets, even that wasn't quite enough.
Thankfully I now own a carpet spot cleaner so can suck out the water before it hits the floor.

Puppy house training pads. And then a baking tray on the top
