Everyday you see on the news people at rock bottom. Today I saw a father boiling the kettle to give is son a bath because he couldn't afford gas etc. I understand this is a reality for some but the media makes it seem like its wide spread and everyone is really struggling. When I go into town on the weekend I still see bars ,restaurants amusement , theatre's, shops like selfridges full etc. I'm starting to think the media keeps showing us these stories to keep us from going out and protesting against rises in cost of food etc. I say this because today I saw a lot of people in clothes not fit for the pouring rain soaking wet and felt guilty for being dry in my waterproof jacket with my shopping and felt grateful even those I don't have loads. I said I feel guilty and he said yes that's why the media keeps showing you it so you think I should be thankful I'm not in that position instead of going out like some countries on the streets and telling the government to do something about it and it Stops riots because of the rich getting richer out of this crisis Oil companies even Jeff amazon dude feels guilty and wants to give his money he stole off people by not paying them properly etc. I walk around tesco and people's baskets are still full. Am I just a conspiracy knob about the media really overhypering it to keep us quiet ansdobenident.

Fuck me, how many times do we need to hear this????

bellac11 · 15/11/2022 19:50

Do you mean 'overhypes the cost of living' or 'overhypes the cost of living crisis'?

Willyoujustbequiet · 15/11/2022 19:50

Fgs

Fleur405 · 15/11/2022 19:51

Oh good, this again.

midnightstaylorsversion · 15/11/2022 19:51

🙄

Foolsandtheirmoney · 15/11/2022 19:52

I think there's a bit of both. Things are obviously bad for some and there is no denying that the cost of living has risen but the media is dining out on it for clicks with some ridiculous articles.

Sparklesocks · 15/11/2022 19:53

Yep famously if something doesn’t impact you personally then it can’t be happening to other people.

RandomPerson42 · 15/11/2022 19:54

Difference between the haves and have-nots gets bigger each year.
So many won’t struggle at all and many will over the coming years.

Krazykat80 · 15/11/2022 19:54

Over hypes the cost of living crisis

I mean yes the media are playing the oldest trick in the book getting you to look at the immigrants and the benefit claimants taking half a cookie off the plate and being told that they are stealing your cookie whilst other people are hoovering up the other 10 on the plate.

socialism is all about everybody having the ability to get rich whilst nobody is poor and yet people just don’t seem to be able to get on board with that concept, due to lack of MSM messages. And you feel like a conspiracy theorist for being human. They are doing a great job.

CraigDavid · 15/11/2022 19:55

The people shopping in Selfridges are not the same people on the breadline. HTH.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 15/11/2022 19:55

I was in Tesco today and the person behind me in the queue had a basket of yellow label items.

And there’s been a few TikToks of people battling each other for discounted items in supermarkets

But they could be staged. And the person behind me today may have just been a savvy shopper.

Whattodo182 · 15/11/2022 19:55

Ummmm

No.

IHeartGeneHunt · 15/11/2022 19:56

Ooh, the daily I Saw Some People Shopping So Nobody Is Poor shite.

echt · 15/11/2022 19:56

Funny how the CoL deniers are always new to MN.

Skinnermarink · 15/11/2022 19:57

I mean, unless you have learning challenges (do you?) you know the people who are in bars, restaurants and bars and fucking SELFRIDGES are not the people scrapping around worrying about having hot water to bathe their children, right?

Cas112 · 15/11/2022 19:57

The people your talking about are not the people on the breadline that's why🙄

Go and see how many people are queuing at food bank and stop inspecting peoples baskets at Tesco's.. just then maybe you might understand

starpatch · 15/11/2022 19:57

No I don't think the media are overhyping the difficulties people are having in this country, however I do think we should be reporting to some extent on the world hunger that is at the other end of this. Shortage = prices go up everyone consumes less but some people can't afford any at all.

BamBamBilla · 15/11/2022 19:58

So if its only happening to a couple of people we shouldn't be made aware of their experiences? Are we not part of a society which should be caring to all or just the ones that aren't falling below the breadline?

It isn't only happening to a few people by the way. This crisis is affecting millions.

ScreamingInfidelities · 15/11/2022 19:58

ODFOD

Purplelion · 15/11/2022 19:59

I’m one of those people who has a huge trolley full of food at the supermarket, I am poor as fuck and am using my calculator as I walk round and getting as much as I can on my budget to last me and my kids as long as possible in case I can’t buy any more food for a while.

heyimnew · 15/11/2022 19:59

It shouldn't be happening to anyone, even the few, that's why they show

Mylittlesandwich · 15/11/2022 20:01

If you saw me you probably wouldn't know that I'm struggling. My family eat well and are clean and clothed. We go out at the weekend for trips to the park etc.

Things have changed for me though. I don't have the heating on (thankfully it's a mild winter so far but it's only November). I no longer choose what I'd like to eat when I go shopping, I choose whatever I can get cheap and work a meal out from there. I used to take day trips to nice spots or even the beach quite regularly but now my car mostly sits outside the house because I can't afford the fuel. Or the public transport for that matter. I used to see a nice (full price) jumper out shopping and get it for DS. Everything is now in the sale or second hand if I can find it. We used to go out for dinner every month around payday as a treat. Not any more. Thankfully I'm not at the point of boiling kettles for baths but if one of us lost our jobs for example that's exactly where we'd be.

But for many life goes on, new jobs or pay rises have cushioned the blow and I absolutely don't grudge those people their luxuries, I just miss them for myself.

DashboardConfessional · 15/11/2022 20:01

Of course the trolleys are still full in Tesco. People need to eat. When I'm in there with 3 items in a basket it's because I live within walking distance and need milk and a loaf, not because I've got 3p to last the week.

SavingKitten · 15/11/2022 20:04

You are a conspiracy knob. The media are trying to raise awareness of those suffering, hense talking about it. There are more than 67 million people living in the UK, I can’t understand how people can be ignorant enough to think because they see people out shopping and drinking that there aren’t millions really struggling to live. It’s obvious that some have different financial situations to others.
