To be cross over Curry's price change?

I had my eye ona laptop that was on offer at half-price of £249.
I did put it in my basket but decided I wanted to see it
(I was also going to trade in my Toshiba Satellite but clearing everything off itv was such a faff....) - by which time, the nearest store with it in stock was 30 miles away.
Set off in the rain, got lost in the town I was heading to (last time I went, was to theThursday Horse Sales in the Cattle Market ----long time ago) and found the store.
One out on display so I could have a look; price on the POS ws £249 - BUT the smaller price label was £299. When I finally got someone to help, she told me he price changes on Wednesdays... £299 from today (??) - another member of staff backed her up (she was Polish, so was probably not fully "getting" my quick way of speaking/tone), and THEN I was told that they only have ones that are "set up to open and go" (hich means the box has been opened, which usually causes a problem for Return) - which adds another cost, as that is a chargeable service. Actually though they "found one in the warehouse" that has not been set up that was available for me to buy - at £299.

I half-heartedly tried to "complain" there and then but she really did not seem to understand me, and everyone else was busy. I did think I would raise it by phone/online later - which I have just tried to do, although the man did try to tell me I could only raise it in the store, and why didn't I do that at the time, and what did I want him to do....? And then, it turns out, the complaint cannot be raised until over 24 hours after purchase...

A bit fed up - but am I BU to think that the change of prices shoud be widely and highly visible - on the website especially - and it's Tuesday, if anyone cares to know - but then, as they always say, prices can go down as well or up (or something like that). I so nearly didn't buy it - and if it goes down again for Black Friday, I shall be very cross.

YANBU to be annoyed that something was labelled £249 but was actually £299. Although contrary to what is often trotted out, they aren’t under any obligation to “honour” the lowest price.

Was it not still listed online for £249 though whilst you were in store? Because I probably would have just ordered for home delivery instead of paying the higher price. Some retailers might have given you a £50 gift card or something as a goodwill gesture but other than that I’m not sure what the customer service agents could do.

Lockheart · 15/11/2022 19:46

Why not just order one off the website if it's cheaper. Rod and own back spring to mind.

maryberryslayers · 15/11/2022 19:47

Why didn't you just order it online once you'd seen it?

rainonasunnyday · 15/11/2022 19:48

Just order online I wouldn’t of paid more

LoveMyPiano · 15/11/2022 19:53

@GivenchyDahhling
Mm, so frustrating. She looked it up on their website and it was £299, which is why I suppose I didn't have a leg to stand on I guess.
Althoug the further pushing to nearly have to buy one with full set up and added cost as well, felt like a p-take, as i would mean that none would be available at even £299!
BUT - I cannot see anywhere on their site that the price will change in Tuesday/Wednesday - whichever the heck it is!

60 mile round trip to spend more (they weren't even doing home delivery on it, just to store albeit there is one closer - THIS is why shopping is so much online.... ) woe is me.

Go and look at it, get a nice coffee and cake on a cafe and then buy it online. I'd probably just buy it from somewhere cheaper on the internet or ask when the next price drop was coming. They've probably put the price up so they can drop it again in again in a months time.

Well, I didn't know until I got there.
I didn't mind the drive, and like I said I hadn't been to that town in years.
But I didn't want or expect it to cost me more.

(I am always making a rod for my own back, it's nothing new.)

They are pulling a fast one.

They HAVE to honour the displayed price. Hope you took a photo of it as evidence.

I honestly did think I could reolve it after the fact..... (old-fashioned of me, the website/customer service gave me the complete runaround), and I didn't want to take the sale away from the Assistant (is that the term...?) after I had started - but I certainly would have done if they had persisted with the unwanted set-up and additional cost.

I had something similar in Currys last month. Wanted a laptop which was displayed in blue with the price below, and the label stated the option of blue or white. I asked for a white one and was told that colour was more expensive. They didn't have any blue in stock at the lower price. And they wouldn't honour the lower price for the white as they said the label was wrong but the higher price on the website was correct. Just poor customer service.

Yes, I did; there were two different ones though.

I'm pretty sure legally they don't have to but most shops will honor an incorrect price.

alexdgr8 · 15/11/2022 20:09

you could report it to trading standards where the store is.
but unless you have evidence that it had a price ticket of £249 on it, and that you were charged/asked for £299, there is not much point.
did you photo the item on display with its price ticket ? prices online can differ from in store prices.
you sound rather muddled.
why didn't you go to the store manager with the price tickets.
too late now.
they are not obliged to sell it to you at the lower price, because they are not obliged to sell any item to you.
if it is wrongly ticketed, the correct procedure is to withdraw that item from sale, take it back into the stock room and correctly price it, preferably bringing it back out the next trading day.
to ask/charge a price higher than one indicated could be an offence, but there is the due diligence defence, and local trading standards are unlikely to take action in one incident.

It would do them far more good in terms of goodwill if they did honour/adjust in cases like this, wouldn't it?

The last laptop I bought from Curry's was being discontinued (a blue Lenovo as it happens) and I got the runaround then, and ended up with display and a "discount" of some sort.
It all seems quite sloppy though, and a bit of pot luck in terms of getting what you want at the price you thought it was.

I am not muddled. It's Curry's who were muddled/midly incompetent.

As I am sure you know, the ticket is not on he actual product, but next to it or on a display nearby, as in my photo. One price right next to it, one on the POS above it, showing model number (and same as internet price).

I think my main issue is that (apart from online price SHOULD be the same as in store) - it thatis NOT clear, if stated at all on the website, that the price changes on a set date.
This did not really feel like a conversation to be had with a Manager in a "busy" (i.e. no staff available) store, and the Assistant was essentially just shrugging (or not understanding me). I thought a CS helpline would be better than it truned out to be.

And if prices do not match, and the internet prices are lower, then it all adds to the loss of footfall in stores, I would say.

Lol no, they really don’t. You’re literally making up the law.

veganbacon · 15/11/2022 20:22

Did you buy it?

DuggeeFanclub · 15/11/2022 20:27

Very frustrating. It should really say £249 until this date if it’s on a special offer. I’m a bit confused did u find it at that price online the day before u travelled to the shop? Or did the price change midway thru the day?

LoveMyPiano · 15/11/2022 20:28

veganbacon · 15/11/2022 20:22

Did you buy it?

I did.
Might still return it.

If I had gone yesterday - I could have got it at a closer store, and at £249.
More to the point, if it had said anywhere on the page/site, that the price change(s) happen on "Tuesdays", I would have definitely got myself there sooner.. But I did want to actually see it, so was a bit reluctant to pay and collect; this is because the Descriptions do not always match the product - for example, this does not have a backlit keyboad, even though the online description says it does.

Take it back with the description that says it has a back-lit keypad. It will get reduced again in run up to Xmas

I looked tit yesterday, and still had the page open (laptop is only put to Sleep at night), so it still showed £249. Mayb if I had refeshed the page it would have shown the new price.... But as you say, it should clearly state that the price will change (increase) on a certain day.
