To be cross over Curry's price change?

I had my eye ona laptop that was on offer at half-price of £249.
I did put it in my basket but decided I wanted to see it
(I was also going to trade in my Toshiba Satellite but clearing everything off itv was such a faff....) - by which time, the nearest store with it in stock was 30 miles away.
Set off in the rain, got lost in the town I was heading to (last time I went, was to theThursday Horse Sales in the Cattle Market ----long time ago) and found the store.
One out on display so I could have a look; price on the POS ws £249 - BUT the smaller price label was £299. When I finally got someone to help, she told me he price changes on Wednesdays... £299 from today (??) - another member of staff backed her up (she was Polish, so was probably not fully "getting" my quick way of speaking/tone), and THEN I was told that they only have ones that are "set up to open and go" (hich means the box has been opened, which usually causes a problem for Return) - which adds another cost, as that is a chargeable service. Actually though they "found one in the warehouse" that has not been set up that was available for me to buy - at £299.

I half-heartedly tried to "complain" there and then but she really did not seem to understand me, and everyone else was busy. I did think I would raise it by phone/online later - which I have just tried to do, although the man did try to tell me I could only raise it in the store, and why didn't I do that at the time, and what did I want him to do....? And then, it turns out, the complaint cannot be raised until over 24 hours after purchase...

A bit fed up - but am I BU to think that the change of prices shoud be widely and highly visible - on the website especially - and it's Tuesday, if anyone cares to know - but then, as they always say, prices can go down as well or up (or something like that). I so nearly didn't buy it - and if it goes down again for Black Friday, I shall be very cross.

They apparently have a Price Match policy - I wonder how that works, when they can't even agree with themselves!

Not quite the same but I had a price match issue with Currys once when buying a mobile phone. The deal was find the same one cheaper within so many days and we'll price match. I did so I contacted them through online chat. Literally just before I screenshot the price on Curry's website. They asked for proof of the cheaper phone, I sent a website link. They then claimed their phone was priced exactly the same. Thankfully I could prove that minutes before it had been lower so they honoured the refund of the difference. The guy altered the price while I was on the chat! Without outright admitting it he was all jokey like 'you got us, ha ha!'

Next time screen shot it and take it from there. Or just don't buy from Currys again

I realise this is going off at a tangent but I went to my nearest Curry's last weekend. I was looking for a microwave I'd seen on their website.

Staff stood in a huddle, chatting and laughing and ignoring me. I went over to ask for help and got an airy hand gesture which sent me in a particular direction. Found the display microwave but none in stock. In browsing the other models I found an ancient, decaying banana in one of them. On my way out I mentioned the banana to the huddle of staff ('hi just to let you know...') and one person said 'what do you want us to do about it.' Went to John Lewis.

i really don’t trust Currys, I specifically paid for a 13:00-1700 time slot (DS had football in the AM).
However instead got stroppy delivery driver calling from my doorstep@ 11:15, he claimed time slots were estimated, I asked why they gave the option of time specific delivery? He told me, “Currys’are stupid”.

it seems their prices are as unpredictable as their delivery times.

I love a tangent! But wow - and yet, why am I not surprised......
"What do you want me to do about it?" Hmm, a theme.

After today, I think online is maybe the way forward for me.
They closed my nearest John Lewis 😪

Crazy that we have to be screenshotting and taking photos as proof though isn't it? That is so bad.

And I do tend to forget - I was just slightly on the ball today, hence the pointless photo.
They really are so sneaky.

Why when you got to the store and saw it was more did you not just take out your phone and buy it online?

LoveMyPiano · 15/11/2022 21:07

@SuperFi They seem to be half-arsed across the board.

The laptopI bought was "Not available for delivery" and only physically available for collection "now" in the store I went to. And yet, one of the "offers", if I clicked through, was Free Delivery (unspecified time). I wonder how that would have worked out?

Just return it.

Black Friday is days away. There will be better deals.

Snoozer11 · 15/11/2022 21:08

I had the opposite a few weeks ago.

Curry's website advertised something at one price, but their in-store website had it for £50 cheaper than the website.

Of course I didn't say anything and snapped it up.

I find a lot of the staff in Currys to be rude.

TriceratopsRocks · 15/11/2022 21:09

We also bought a laptop from Curry's recently and had similar issues. We browsed in store when passing and found one that looked ideal, but as we hadn't looked at the website/any other store at that point, we didn't buy it. The next day we went back and it had gone up by £100. It had also gone up on their website too. After some deliberation, we ended up getting an alternative laptop that had come down in price, that was similar but not quite as good as the original one. When I was talking to the Curry's staff member, they explained that they rotated their sale items every week, on the same day (think it was Tuesday or Wednesday?) so if you saw something on that day, you had to buy it there and then or the price might change the next day. Seems prices are only stable Thurs-Mond. But as some things go up, other things come down. Not ideal by any means, but if you know their approach you can at least work with it.

She had pulled it up on the website and the price had changed overnight.
It had been a limited period offer, with no clear end date that anyone can see.
When I looked at my laptop this morning before I set off, where the page was still open from yesterday, it was showing £249. Amd that did not change when I selected the store with stock that could be collected today. But i did not go ahead to purchase online because I wanted to see it first.

If the price goes up on Wednesday and its only Tuesday, they are required to sell it at Tuesdays price. They are taking the piss.
Report them.to trading standards

They are pulling a fast one.

They HAVE to honour the displayed price. Hope you took a photo of it as evidence.

No they don't. It is an invitation to buy not a contract. They should display previous pricing though.

Also, retailers are not obliged to inform you of days when price changes occur

Wouldn't it be nice if they did though?
Don't Tesvo have an end date for special prices on the shelf?

Of course I mean Tesco......

One piece of useful info that has been gained though - Curry's new prices Tuesday morning - even if she said Wednesday.

A win for me!
Before bracing myself to call them again, I was actually on the Argos site looking for something else, and just put laptops in Search, as I was planning to return mine to Curry's if the CS call proved pointless.

So - the actual very same model is on Argos for £229.99 (!).
I checked all the details of the Currys Price Promise, took photos, screenshots, sent myself links and even wrote all details down, and headed off to a (closer) Curry's (having also put one in my Argos basket - just in case....).

So, after checking everything they could (the actually product detail - apart from two letters in the item name/model - and photos were IDENTICAL) - i was refunded £69 :o)

This seemed far easier than returning and then getting the Argos one, even to get Nectar points; and, unusualy for me, I refrained from over-explaining and possibly pissing them off, although I did say that I "wanted it so much I drove 60 miles yesterday" - and that at least, even with the refund, it was a sale for Curry's.... (as if they care) and promised I am going back for a Tassimo when I' not in a hurry.

Anyway - a decent laptop with 8Gb RAM is now for sale at Argos - I think it is pre-Black Friday, and they have said prices will not go lower.
