Christmas Lights already

If you are one of the people who have put your tree up or lit up your house already, why?

I presume you don't need to worry about rising fuel costs?

There's loads up near me ! It's madness just making the energy companies more profits in my eyes 🤷‍♀️

LynetteScavo · 14/11/2022 19:50

I doubt one string of tree lights will cost that much to have on for a few hours- it's a bit early for Christmas if you ask me though!

CraigDavid · 14/11/2022 19:55

Modern led lights cost very little to run. I have fairy lights up all year round and very low electricity bills.

Thepossibility · 14/11/2022 19:57

Because a lot of houses in my neighbourhood already have lights up for Diwali, and then my neighbours put theirs up. This is our first year in a nice neighbourhood.
The kids love it. (The tree won't be going up until December.)

KitchiHuritAngeni · 14/11/2022 19:58

Because I've been diagnosed with cancer again, because me and the kids are fed up and wanted to put some twinkly shit up to lighten our moods, because I cant work at the minute so treats are few.and far between and this is free and because a string of lights being on costs about the same as the big light being on so 🤷🏻‍♀️

BosaNova · 14/11/2022 19:58

I like how ghis year the judging of premature Christmaseers can be done under the guise of energy bills 😁

Headabovetheparakeet · 14/11/2022 19:58

I wouldn't put Christmas lights up before December but I doubt it would increase my energy bill if I did. We normally use the Christmas lights instead of one of the lamps in the living room so I doubt it uses much more power.

Unless you're talking about people who cover their houses in lights inside and out?

LoveAngelLove · 14/11/2022 19:58

Batteries?

Thepossibility · 14/11/2022 19:59

Also we have solar lights as we're in Australia. No electricity cost.

HipHopBanzai · 14/11/2022 20:01

Mine won't be going up for another few weeks but I know from looking at our smart meter that LED lights cost pennies to run. They're definitely not going to make a big difference to fuel bills.

GreenWheat · 14/11/2022 20:01

It's like clockwork on MN isn't it? The minute the Halloween and Bonfire Night grinches get back in their boxes out pop the Christmas moaners. It's like whack a mole!

DesignerRecliner · 14/11/2022 20:03

I said the same on another thread but I'm living with the constant threat of miscarriage and wanted something to cheer me up & distract the DC from the fact that Mummy is a ghost of herself due to fatigue and sickness. Also, the tree lights being on used the same energy as our LED lamp, so we use the tree lights in lieu of the lamp.

Now fuck off and stop being so judgemental

I know, it's hilarious. Why can't they just say "Every year I am massively judgemental about people enjoying Christmas and would have a moan, whatever people do"

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/11/2022 20:07

My friend posted something that really made me think. About how some/ many people need the lights and something jolly for their mental health once it starts to get dark earlier.

I have some white fairy lights up all year (indoors) so can’t really criticise!

Ralphschocolate · 14/11/2022 20:10

Just saying ...

Christmas Lights already
monsteronahill · 14/11/2022 20:11

You'd hate me - all but one of my trees up already, about 300m of fairy lights and all my other room decorations are up!! Unless people are offering to pay my fuel bills, I'm not sure what their issue is?

I love Christmas. Best time of the year. Festive spirit begins early in my life, dark evenings being lit by fairy lights makes everything magical! The planning, prepping, decorating, baking, getting family over and cooking for everyone etc etc. It's magical and I'll enjoy it for as long as I can, if that means I start in November - I start in November 🎄

All the bah humbug people are welcome to judge away and be enjoy their undecorated homes, but I'm not at all bothered with how they're living their lives - they should probably try to be the same 😊

FlowersareEverything · 14/11/2022 20:11

Most of my outside lights last year were Led battery operated lights. Very cheap to run. Frankly, I don’t care when people put their decorations up, they’re not harming me and if it gives them joy good for them!

TulipCat · 14/11/2022 20:14

Maybe MN could set up a board called "Seasonal Judgement Coner".All the people who moan about Christmas, Halloween and Bonfire Night could congregate for their utterly pointless griping.

Floweryflora · 14/11/2022 20:16

You can’t be serious op. It costs about 2.50 for 4 weeks at current rates . So someone chucks a fiver at it, doesn’t mean they don’t care about fuel rates 🤪

Flapjackquack · 14/11/2022 20:20

I haven’t seen any yet. I like to look at the nice subtle ones, but I am not so secretly hoping energy bills puts my neighbour off their migraine inducing blue and purple flashing disco extravaganza. The worst thing about it is they string them across the house really wonkily so they don’t follow the roof line or anything.

Apparently I hate them more than I realised…

Floydthebarber · 14/11/2022 20:26

I put my tree up mid December but always put up some lights at the beginning of the month. This year I might even put some up earlier because it is cheerful. Remember January 2021 when loads of people left lights up way after 12th Night, properly into February. Wasn't it lovely.

Although wonky flashing blue and purple ones that a PP mentioned would annoy me.

LivingOnAPrayerYes · 14/11/2022 20:47

Can you imagine being so miserable that not only do you judge people putting lights up in November, you take the time to start a thread about it. I can't think of a single reason why it would negatively impact you.

I can't answer your actual question, as I don't do anything Christmas related until December, because for me personally, I feel it makes it more special and I don't get bored of it. But some neighbours have lights up and my only reaction has been a little smile as I turn into our road as it literally lights up these dark miserable November days. I know the neighbours two doors down lost two of their parants this year, so their kids are facing their first without any grandparents around. Up to them what they pay for. (Are you taking notes on all of the things your neighbours do by the way, and 'presuming they don't need to worry about rising fuel costs'? Like how many lights they have on throughout the whole house, how often they do short drives to the shop they could walk to, whether they're going on a long haul holiday next year, if they're wearing t-shirt in their house and so must have their heating on. Or is it only Christmas lights that you are concerned about).

The thing that gets me happily through life is this: I don't worry about or judge anything that isn't hurting me or others. Things might not be how I'd do them or what I enjoy, but if they bring joy to others and don't hurt me, then how the hell can I have any problem with it?

BosaNova · 14/11/2022 20:52

I am tempted to put on really bright flashing one and see which mumsnetters live by me. Maybe could add projector with music

FridayNightIsWineNight · 14/11/2022 20:52

My decs won't go up until December but it neither bothers or annoys me that people don't do the same.
People have different views and different reasons for their own decisions. It'd be a far nicer place if everyone stopped being so fucking judgemental all the time.

moistmingemist · 14/11/2022 22:52

Ok so to all of you calling me judgemental I'm not judging I'm asking why - there's a difference. I'm interested in the reasons for people doing it. You all presume I've no lights up have you?

It's interesting that LED lights cost a minimal amount and good to know that too.

To those of you who have them up all year round I totally get that and love twinkly lights in the garden.

I specifically meant Christmas outdoor lights/decs of the Blackpool kind.

Apologies for anyone I've upset, I'll fuck of to my possibly dimly lit corner...or is it twinkly and sparkly. I'll go and check and judge myself accordingly.
