A better life in Norfolk... really?

We have so many family members who have moved to Norfolk in the last 10 years and a few friends too. They have mostly gone there for a better way of life. Away from the hustle and bustle of the south east where we are.

We're constantly being told how amazing Norfolk is - the countryside, the villages, the coast, Norwich, etc. And some family members are very keen to tell us how crap it is where we live in comparison, knowing that we are settled where we are and wouldn't want to move. Nowhere is perfect (about from Norfolk apparently) but we like where we are. These family members have moved from where we live which although busy and a London commuter area, it's also fairly affluent in parts, a coastal place and with countryside/woodland still accessible nearby.

What is the attraction to Norfolk? Is it the most ideal place to live? Are people happier there? Are there no down sides to it at all?

I don't doubt some aspects of life quality could be better in Norfolk but I've been on holidays there and many family visits over the years and I can't see how it's as incredible as some family members are making out. Maybe they're just showing off or justifying their reasons for moving there? But to be really negative about where we live is just becoming annoying. It's almost like they're now better than us for living in Norfolk, it's so odd.

Any thoughts?

In Norfolk itself the health data varies markedly. I have always been struck that between my area (South Norfolk) and Great Yarmouth there is a gap of 12 years in life expectancy. Nothing to do with the County, just that poorer seaside towns tend to be quite deprived. Blackpool is another prime example.

Where did you grow up? Sounds nice, still coastal?

Me? Haddiscoe.

You need to start your own thread. You've posted on a thread about living in Norfolk

Norfolk can safely say is the only area I’ve never made a single friend. No one talks even. It’s a bizarre mix of true insular locals holiday makers and second home owners. There’s so much contempt for those in particular it’s like us and them and I’m not even included in us. It’s ok if you’re not alone and have plenty of money and company. If you don’t it’s a very lonely place. No career opportunities and no health services on the door step. No dentists what so ever. Just don’t any to stay. Even the coast is a very lonely place and there’s only about one sandy beach safe enough to sit on… I’ve always said it’s ok to just come for the summer but time to return to some form of civilisation and humanity and feel part of society the rest of the year. Lots of severe deprivation in the smaller towns.

justjuggling · 26/11/2025 04:28

Surely everywhere has nice bits and not so nice bits? I’m not over keen on the flatness of the Norfolk landscape but live someone hilly so would probably get used to it!

TheFluentDreamer · 26/11/2025 21:35

Yes but on the whole, apart from the second Homer areas and holiday villages, Norfolk is much more deprived and less wealthy overall than the south. Probably makes people less sophisticated. Not to mention it’s farmers rule territory!

EternalPringle · 26/11/2025 21:50

I would not live there as a person of colour because I am wary of what I have heard. Having said that, we did a mini break in the Norfolk broads and loved it.

One thing I remember is that the food was delicious and we had massive portion sizes. I would be 100 stone if I lived there!

Not quite in Norfolk but did move from London to Suffolk. It is pretty and the villages are very quaint. Public transport isn’t great and we could do with upgraded roads to the rest of the country. The A14 isn’t up to the capacity we need today. Trains need to have routes directly north rather than having to go into London first!

It did take me a while to feel like I belonged but working in the local nursery helped as I got to know all the local children and their parents. I still get random local teens saying hello to me and I haven’t a clue who they are now, but I’m sure I probably cared for them as babies.

I think to live in East Anglia you have to be ready for a rural lifestyle.

TheFluentDreamer · 27/11/2025 01:35

You could get to 100 stone anywhere if you eat the wrong foods!
your right about the racism here though, it’s mainly because it’s all white country lords of the manor folk who have never ever mixed with people of any other races purely because there aren’t any here!

What?

I know this is a bizarrely resurrected thread, but what do you find unsafe about (west to east) Hunstanton, Brancaster, Holkham, Wells, West Runton, Cromer, Overstrand, Mundesley, Walcott, Happisburgh, Waxham, Sea Palling, Winterton, Horsey Gap etc before getting round to Yarmouth?

Yes, beautiful sandy (and safe) beaches all the way round.
That is one of the oddest and most inaccurate comments I have ever read on here.

FlashyAndShiny · 28/11/2025 09:18

The landscape is lovely, however the people are... well, if you have been there you know what I mean. Let's say they are...different.

It’s a big county. Of course there are bits ‘not very nice’.

i don’t think the whole of Lancashire is a shithole because it’s got Blackpool.

FWIW Great Yarmouth has the best chips ever, on the market 🤣

Disagree on the chips. The nest fish and chips ever is in Cromer

TheFluentDreamer · 28/11/2025 10:08

rip tides and people regularly drowning off all the coasts ….
