To balance out the 'hates' tgread currently running.

What do you like/love that makes your home a happy place?

Lots of colour
Books
Artwork
Wood flooring (downstairs)
Carpet in bedroom
Blankets

My house is quite quirky!

I like dark or jewel colours, velvet curtains, stained glass, Tiffany lamps taxidermy and skulls, Persian rugs on parquet floors, beamed ceilings, and things like planetary globes and orreries.

Most of my furniture is inherited or scavenged.
I started out having a red library room, with floor to ceiling bookshelves, reclaimed parquet, ancient bashed red leather chesterfield sofas and an oak pedestal desk reclaimed from a skip, but the book collection has outgrown the room, so now there are bookshelves around the house. My vast SF and occult collections are going nowhere, even if they were available on kindle.
Old filing cabinets, sprayed red, contain my SF and pagan magazines collections, and we have a large coffee table made out of sleepers, at just the right height for the dogs' tails to sweep everything off.

On the spare bits of wall in the house, I have some nice pictures, picked up in auction or by artist friends, some taxidermy and some drums.
In my mainly green parlour, I have another reclaimed parquet floor and a tile and slate fireplace, vintage almost but not quite William Morris velvet three piece suite, picked up at auction, and some proper antiques: a long case clock and a davenport desk.
My kitchen is bright yellow and green, with wooden units and brightly coloured tiles in that random chequerboard pattern that is now really outdated, but I like it still.

I have committed these and a lot more sins… 😀

Puddinandpie · 16/11/2022 11:06

@TarquinOliverNimrod my kitchen is literally all pink cupboards dressers the lot, I love it, we just have to tile the floor and get rid of hideous light😁 I like kitchens to be country, pretty hickeldy, pickeldy, not matching, busy, antique/vintage, I have shitloads of teapots and cups and saucers in mine (can't get enough)

Puddinandpie · 16/11/2022 11:14

Ignore my twice painted floor🙈 (first painted chequer board pink and mint green, then I got fed up and painted all mint green now am waiting on tiles like our hallway, their victorian lookalike), also am having a chandelier put in instead of hideous fluorescent light (bloody awful thing)
Dh and me handmade the mini breakfast bar/island, I love upcycling, transforming unwanted/knackered items into something pretty and useful😁

Also I handpainted every single rose on the wall, it seemed like a really clever idea at the time then I realised its gonna take me a week to do them all, but you start, you cannot stop🙈

Puddinandpie · 16/11/2022 11:17

Oh, almost forgot and box in the bloody boiler!

Essentially I love this house and decor and get a lot of joy from following this account, while also being obscenely jealous I don’t have her eye or handiness: instagram.com/townley_terrace

Just round the corner from me, she's a friend of a friend. You can stay in the flat in the basement, which is equally lovely although not quite as grand!

CaptainThe95thRifles · 16/11/2022 11:20

Wood or tiled floors, wood panelling, huge fireplaces and exposed beams.

On a more achievable level for those of us who don't inherit an old pile, I like signs of life and personality in a home. Weaponry on the walls - historic bows on hangers on the wall, swords and armour work for me, but I like to see other people's hobbies, skills and interests reflected in their home too.

Old furniture, inherited or acquired second hand, that doesn't match anything else, but has a new life instead of landfill. Books everywhere. Art - not popular prints chosen to match the decor, but art - prints, originals, home made, whatever - that the owner just loves, even if it doesn't mean anything to me. Old maps on the walls.

I don't like disposable trends of fashion or changing stuff to "keep up" with that year's look.

The POW's carved peacock, mentioned early in the thread is fabulous.

Twizbe · 16/11/2022 11:22

Modern, clean lines, textures but muted colours, lots of glass and natural light.

mamabear715 · 16/11/2022 12:07

Loving the pics, ladies!

R0undincircles · 16/11/2022 12:13

I can remember the first time that I saw a colourful property with an out door bathroom without a roof on it. I think it was in Costa Rica. I thought how amazing !

I have since travelled to some hot countries & experienced outside bathrooms & they make perfect sense in a hot, humid climate.

I follow lots of architecture & interior websites

Davethecat2000 · 16/11/2022 12:24

We've recently finished our bathroom.. it's taken months as we did it all ourselves ( apart from laying the floor).

My home is almost but not quite minimalist (white walls, floorboards, earthy colours) which I like.

Though like you OP, I love the quirky look, ever so slightly cluttered, but neat. Clashing patterns and textures that together, seem to ‘work’. It’s not for me in my own home, but I do like it.

Puddinandpie · 16/11/2022 12:37

@Davethecat2000 I love that green colour it's beautiful can I ask what paint it is, I'm looking for a green for my boys bedroom a really deep lush green😍
We've done everything ourselves in our house and boy it's bloody hard work, but very rewarding, we laid our floor tiles in our hallway and that was a killer, but we got there in the end it's all a labour of love!

Puddinandpie · 16/11/2022 12:44

@Giggorata I love taxidermy, its amazing how beautiful it is, I have a boris the boar and Stanley the stag in my living room, I wish I had more 😍

Davethecat2000 · 16/11/2022 13:07

@Puddinandpie is Dark Brunswick Green by Little Greene

Puddinandpie · 16/11/2022 13:12

Omg they are gorgeous I'm swaying between hooper, puck and jewel beetle and the wallpapers oh the wallpapers!!😍😍😍

FelicityFlops · 16/11/2022 13:12

Wooden floors, books, white walls, original artwork, the odd piano, silver candlesticks. Must have separate dining-room definitely not open plan.
Open fire or wood burner a plus.

Shillyshall · 16/11/2022 13:19

You all have such wonderful ideas.
I too love period homes and we used to have a stunning one .
Have since moved to a more expensive area and or budget would not stretch to this as the now local terraces are very large and 200k or so over budget.
We chose a 1948 ex council house with a good garden and in walking distance to the sea.

love the house.. but dont understand it . The shapes are totally different to tall ceilings , tall windows, period fireplaces .
Any ideas!?
We have put wood burners in kitchen and living room .
unsure how to transfer my taste to new home. ..

Shillyshall · 16/11/2022 13:20

This is the living room .

Books - we have thousands so our front reception room is now a library.

Pictures - we have loads of photos in the back reception room and hallway. In the front room we have more some animal sketches from a local artist and some space images we got resized so they fit above each book shelf (we have Saturn, Pluto, the WOW signal, the pillars of creation, the Earth and a hand drawn picture of the Laniakea / Perseus-Pisces galaxy superclusters)

Rugs - those huge vintage patterned ones. Love them. Got mine off of Ebay for £10

I like blankets and throws too. Would love one of those old Navajo style ones but my god they're expensive.

Overall I just like a house to look lived in.

Dotdotdot19 · 16/11/2022 14:03

According to my (lovely and kind) friend, my house reminds her of Mrs Weasley's house. Everything is mismatched and odd, there are throws and cushions everywhere

Dotdotdot19 · 16/11/2022 14:07

Ahem....excuse my fat fingers there.

Basically my house is somewhere that you can come in an feel relaxed, comfortable and cosy. But it's tricky to keep the balance between cosy and cluttered. I love all things maximally and rich, texture and colour and odd pieces of artwork that is unique to the owner and fits with their personality.

My DH on the other hand just says my taste is odd. Wait until he sees the new tortoise lamp and the monkey lamp for our bedroom! And the hanging monkey ceiling light for the landing....

LadyEloise1 · 16/11/2022 18:53

New England/Scandi vibe.
White clapboard houses with shutters.
Lots of white with pops of colour.
Dark wood floors and also white / distressed look floorboards.

Ketzele · 16/11/2022 22:58

@Shillyshall I love your front room - that rug! Funnily enough when I read your post, before I saw the photo, I was going to say mid century. The proportions of the furniture work better with lower ceilings. I would also think about how to use colour on the walls, as white in mid century homes can look quite boxy. Not over the top, but some zoning with mid century colours (putty pink, olive, toffee?) could look quite striking?
