To think it’s silly posting things on Facebook that are directed at people not on Facebook?

like birthday wishes as an example.

I see it all the time. E.g. a Facebook status saying “happy birthday mum, hope you have a lovely day” even if that person is not even on Facebook to see it. Is it not a bit pointless?

Very pointless. Just message them privately or call them.

steff13 · 13/11/2022 22:31

Perhaps, but the thing about Facebook is that people's pages are to post whatever they feel like posting. 🤷‍♀️

That’s correct - but doesn’t mean one can’t have an opinion on it!

My local Facebook community group is full of "to the driver of the red car that cut me up in Tesco's carpark today" type posts... Completely pointless!

Omg! Those kinds of posts make me laugh out loud… in my local community’s Facebook group it’s about dog poo.

”to the person who didn’t pick up their dog’s poo In the park this morning, shame on you!”

There is clearly a Facebook in the afterlife, given the number of my friends who send annual birthday wishes to their dead parents/friends/dogs.

XenoBitch · 13/11/2022 23:23

I post happy birthday to my dog on my FB.

There is a lady on my FB who has been wishing her gran a happy birthday for years now... her gran will be about 130 now. She always starts with "if you were alive...".

you just beat me to it… !

a personal bugbear - why can’t they just say “thinking of Mum, on what would’ve been her 78th birthday” ?

And yes, both of these 🤣 what’s the point?!

I agree with you OP - just attention seekers…

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 13/11/2022 23:27

I wished happy birthday to my cat on fb last week 😂

DripDripDripSugar · 13/11/2022 23:27

Yes, it’s just pointless attention seeking and really, really weird.

SalmonEile · 13/11/2022 23:28

Posting a message to a dead relative I can understand, it’s therapeutic- you can’t talk to the person in real life, ok you can’t actually talk to them on Facebook either but it feels like posting a message for them

what rubs me up the wrong way is when someone posts a birthday message for someone who doesn’t use the platform when they’ve already messaged the person in a group chat to wish them happy birthday and said person has responded

Lots of people posted on DH's Facebook wishing him a happy birthday this year, he died in February and I found comfort in knowing others were missing him too.

Glazelightly · 13/11/2022 23:31

I have a friend in his 50s who annually wishes his dead grandmother a happy birthday "you would have been 122..." No, that was never going to happen! I find it strange.

SalmonEile · 13/11/2022 23:32

Open letters though -
“to the lady who rolled her eyes at me today in tesco ,
i want you to know that blah blah blah blah blah “

”omg hun so true!!”

you have no idea what kind of day the person you’re addressing was going through either so if you didn’t pull them up at the time your open letter is just to make yourself feel righteous, not actually educate the person

APJ1 · 13/11/2022 23:43

@OnTheRunWithMannyMontana For me, these annoying posts are acceptable if you change them to being about a pet! You can have write as much 'snuggly time with my bub-bubs' photos of you and your cat as you like! 😄

Those drive me nuts. Never in the history of fb has someone seen one of those posts & thought 'shit that's me they're talking about. That's it I'm going to veba better driver now. Thank you fb' 🙄🙄

Kedece2410 · 13/11/2022 23:47

Even more cringey is people posting birthday messages to fb friends who've actually died but they don't know. A friend of mine lost her husband this year & it was awful seeing how many people posted wishing him a fantastic day!!

Yes! I see that often too.

One of my favourite things on fb is when the older generation (in my experience, not being ageist) share posts about someones dog that's gone missing at the other end of the country or in another country entirely 😂

CookPassBabtridge · 13/11/2022 23:57

or cat.

tentinginmarch · 13/11/2022 23:59

I'm not being an arse - I agree with you. Just 😆

Yep, another country, and from 3 years ago.
Or they post about a small child who needs some facial surgery... the "if you don't share you don't care" type posts. Kid needed the surgery 8 years ago.
