To be sad at how Charles The King looks compared to how Charles the Prince looked?

Before anyone feels the need to point it out, yes I know he has just lost his parents in quick succession and got dropped into a role of high stress and responsibility. I get that it will affect him.

But I saddens me so much that he looks so much more careworn in such a small space of time. It struck me today when I saw the photos of him, he seems so much more stern, almost angry. I cant really describe it but in years past there was a kindness or empathy or something in his face at such events and that seems to have gone. He looks so so much older than he did just 6 months ago. I feel for him and his family and I say this as a republican, but also as a human being.

He's waited too long for it, and he is a tarnished figure.

It would feel better if it were Wlliam and Kate, I keep thinking.

William also looks incredibly preoccupied and furrow-browed. Is it the Harry thing?

The 'pegging' rumour surfaced around a month after Meghan and Harry had been humiliated at the Jubilee, and I can't help feel suspicious that it might have been spread by their acolytes. Horrible if so.

Camilla never looks happy to me either, and she keeps shivering, in all weathers, like a chihuahua. Why is that?

I thought Camilla had tremors. Perhaps she does feel the cold

fannyfartlet · 14/11/2022 00:03

I've always thought he was a bit of a twat and it's a bit more apparent now.

Margot78 · 14/11/2022 00:03

He looks decidedly cheerier in photos
earlier this week when he was up In Yorkshire. It was a solemn ceremony so it was appropriate that his manner was more serious and formal. His mother often looked quite serious at formal ceremonies. To have such a huge role and responsibility to take on at his age probably is taking its toll a bit, plus you’ve got The Crown on Netflix again which must be irritating. I’m not sure why there are such vitriolic posts on here OP, you are entitled to observe and comment on the royal family and to feel empathy for another human being. Some people on here seem incapable of a grown up discussion.

I mean there is a whole section called ‘The Royal Family’ where you can fawn over them to your heart’s content. But yes, in the general AIBU section you might not have people falling over themselves to agree that they feel so saddened and sympathetic for someone doing some relatively easy tasks for an almost obscenely incredible amount of wealth and luxury.

I suggest you re-read my posts. I am anti Monarchy, I have made that very clear. I do not believe that the royal family is relevant, needed or justifiable.

I am also pro Humanity. He, or inded any of his royal born relatives, didnt choose to be born into that family, any more than you did into yours or I into mine.

I do not believe that he deserves sympathy for the royal engagements he has to perform in exchange for, as you say, a lot of wealth and privilege. I do however feel sympathy for a fellow human who has lost both parents in a short time, who has a son who's idea of privacy is to do the whole sad-face Daily Fail victim thing, who's brother has more skeletons in his closet than a haunted house and at the same time has to take on a job that no one in their right mind would want.

Is he older than trump

blueshoes · 14/11/2022 00:15

If he is feeling the strain, he can always abdicate and still be rich and privileged. He is not going to be a penniless pensioner without a job. I would save my worries for someone else.

MiniTheMinx · 14/11/2022 00:15

I'm not surprised he's looking miserable. Can you imagine reigning over this shit show UK plc.

Standing around thinking about how many ordinary men lost their lives for this country, but now he can't do a thing whilst these Tory cunts run the country into the ground.

What exactly has he got to be cheerful about.

JacobReesMoggsSocialConscience · 14/11/2022 00:15

He looks more chipper than some...

I will say again, I am a republican, I am about as far from being a supporter of Monarchy as an instution as a person can be.

But I am still a human being! I can look at someone and be saddened for what they have had to deal with on a personal level. His mum and dad were in their 90's when they died so no, no surprise. Should that mean he shouldnt be upset and grieve? My father was in his late 60's when his parents passed and he was hit so hard by it. My mother is same age as the king and still chokes up when she talks about her parents who she lost just a few years ago, should she not be upset because it was "hardly a surprise"? And yes he was "dropped into" the job, just as his mother was. It's not like he had a choice. I wouldnt want the job, its the dictionary definition of a gilded cage, as some of the comments on here demonstrate.

Thank you for your kind words @Spinninggyro time will tell!

You are a well balanced person @PyongyangKipperbang

It shows very clearly in the presence of other posters on this thread tonight.

I sometimes look a lot older after a night of no sleep or even if I've had a bad cold..takes me a few days to loom like normal again....I'm human so is he.

Roussette · 14/11/2022 00:36

Sorry I dont have sympathy, not much anyway.
There will be very many on MN who would've given anything to have a Mum or Dad stood up smiling and chatting ...instead it was suffering with Cancer, a long prolonged difficult death, or COVID in a care home

And my DPs died within days of each other. Grieving is what we all have to do. How lucky for him his parents had the best care imaginable and his Mum relatively healthy right up to the end

Sorry, meant to add that bit

Oh FFS....I didnt study anything. I was on the BBC news app and thought "Wow, he looks so different." I read the article, saw the other pictures and felt empathy for a fellow human being who has been through an awful lot in the last couple of years and how it showed in his face.

I was just saddened by it, just as I would be if he were my neighbour or a friend.

I am about as low as a person can be at the moment thanks to various issues out of my control and yet I can still manage to not be a dick. Maybe some of you should try it.

Nice. This site is for people to ask for opinions so you cut up rough if you don’t like those opinions?

I think he’s always been on the miserable side, cantankerous even.

I wouldn’t worry op

He may have had a badly boiled egg this morning, might be more appropriate to pity his staff.

I am really glad I am not starting a really busy job aged 73 when most people have been retired for 7 years already.

Perhaps he should start providing you with free childcare 😂

Good for you - at least you are capable of empathy, even though you are a republican. There are some fucking vicious, nasty comments here! I think the King has had a shit time - losing both his parents within a relatively short space of time, and his son pissing off to the US with that viper of a wife, plus Andrew's scandals - and immediately after his mother died, what did he have to do? Tour the country, meet people, endure the massive funeral... give the man a break fgs if you have an ounce of humanity!!

I think the Princess Royal looks very drawn as well.

Speaking as someone who lost both parents inside 5 months, I feel for all of the Royal Family. You are just nasty and heartless if you can't see that.

Fourdayweekplease · 14/11/2022 02:07

Couldn't give a shit, tbh

It is still possible to feel empathy despite the circumstances of a parent’s death and I speak as someone, whose father died when I was a child and I received zero emotional care and love after the event. Everything was about my mother, whom I imagine was presumed to be caring for my needs.
