Is this bill stupidly high or about average?

We are 2 adults and 2 DC in a 3 bed detached house. Our energy bill this month was £394 for electricity and gas combined (screenshot attached with the breakdown of each). Does this seem insanely high or about average?? 🤔

Anyone?

Well I guess if you have had your heating on a lot and have used a lot of fuel it might be fine. Conversely if you haven't had your heating on and have been conserving energy it might be high.

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 13/11/2022 13:35

High compared to ours, but we haven't put the heating on yet, don't use the tumble dryer, only use the oven a couple of times a week etc.

Foxfeeder · 13/11/2022 13:35

It’s very dependent on how you use energy. We used around the same but there will be many people who have used less - or more. Can you look back at the same period last year to gauge whether you used a similar amount?

CeeJay81 · 13/11/2022 13:36

Very high I'd say we are a family of 4 in a small 3 bed semi and ours is about half of that. We have only had heating on for 1 hour 3 times, so far though.

MintJulia · 13/11/2022 13:36

Have you had your heating on? I assume there are four showers a day so plenty of hot water.

Electric consumption - lots of devices? Does anyone work from home? Do you use a tumble drier?

What was it last year? You should expect it to be about twice last year's bill if you haven't changed your usage.

Gooseysgirl · 13/11/2022 13:37

Ours was £156, similar circumstances. We are with Bulb (soon to be Octopus). We have only had heating on about 3 or 4 times though so far, we are v lucky the weather has been mostly mild in the SE.

PeekAtYou · 13/11/2022 13:40

It might be easier to compare if you say how much you've used in kWH rather than how much you paid.
Our house uses much more electricity than gas - I'm guessing that you have the heating on a lot?

Onnabugeisha · 13/11/2022 13:40

There’s not enough info. They did a reading at some point, but did they do one on 12th Oct and again on 11th November? Or was it all estimated and under estimated since say July and they did a reading on 11th November?

Doesnt say what KWHs you used & the rates or the daily standing charges

Lunar270 · 13/11/2022 13:40

That's over twice what we pay for a 4 bed detached with 4 adults (two kids over 18) and running an electric car.

So I'd say very high.

SquirrelRed · 13/11/2022 13:41

We are 2 adults 2 children in a terraced house, our bill this month was £122, we haven't had the heating on apart from an hour once or twice when the kids got out the bath (they do have more baths than that though!), but I do use the tumble dryer a lot and work from home so theres always a tv/radio on and laptop charger etc.
Your bill seems high to me but what is normal for you?

billquestion · 13/11/2022 13:46

I've attached a further breakdown, not sure if that answers of the questions above?

Huge compared to ours, but we haven't had the heating on yet which makes a big difference.

How much gas and electric have you been using?

Gh12345 · 13/11/2022 13:49

Yes that seems high to me. Family of 4 here and gas and electric last month also after the price hike - came to £225

billquestion · 13/11/2022 13:49

No working from home in our house but yes we have had the heating on a fair bit this month.

3 showers a day for adults and eldest DC, plus a bath every night for toddler.

No tumble dryer. We use the heating to dry clothes - maybe we need to look into this?

Previous DD amount on average in winter was around £250 max, so we've seen an increase of about £150 a month at the min.

Here’s mine for a week.

3 bed semi, 2 adults one pre teen who can’t turn anything off it seems and a DH that works at home all day.

Can you look at the kWh usage from last year rather than the cost to do a more accurate comparison?

I bought a electric meter plug to look at individual appliance usage and found the old fridge and freezers we had were using around £750 a year. Dehumidifier running in the garage for DP’s precious car £500 a year.

thelobsterquadrille · 13/11/2022 13:59

Three showers a day, plus a bath, plus the heating - it won't be cheap.

It's dry enough here to line-dry still, is that an option?

2 adults and 1 teen in a 3 bed house. Ours has gone up to £260 a month.

We give meter readings every month so they charge for exact use, are you doing that?

Vikinga · 13/11/2022 14:01

Mine is a 4 bed with 4 kids 50th percent of the time. I've only had the heating on twice this month so it is a lot lower than that (less than £200 I think)

PottyDottyDotPot · 13/11/2022 14:02

It’s high compared to ours and we are a family of 2 retired people 2 adults WFH, an electric car and heating on whenever we want it on, multiple gadgets on all day etc, etc.
Your rate is a lot higher than mine.

TheTeddyBears · 13/11/2022 14:04

Very high. I have 4 bed detached 20yr old house. Our heating on for average of 2-3hrs at the moment every day and we bath our kids every night and shower every day, occasional tumble dryer use, our bill was less than £200 last month.

Is this bill based on actual readings and were previous estimates that were wrong? If that was case it's catch up from prior months not just one month.

Forget how much it used to cost you per month - price rises are such that this comparison is meaningless now.

Look at kWh usage for the same period last year and see if it's about the same?

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 13/11/2022 14:06

We are the same and that’s about £100 more than ours

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 13/11/2022 14:06

Same type of house that is
