Is this bill stupidly high or about average?

We are 2 adults and 2 DC in a 3 bed detached house. Our energy bill this month was £394 for electricity and gas combined (screenshot attached with the breakdown of each). Does this seem insanely high or about average?? 🤔

213 electricity
126 gas

Also with EON. I use my tumble dryer every day, do lots of washing, me and my husband both wfh and we have two children who have frequent baths etc. My gas bill is lower than yours but I think that's only because I have a log burner and have been trying to use that instead of the gas heating. I pay £85 for a builders bag of logs every couple of months though, so it does add up.
I have always been classed as high user though, so it sounds like you are too.

We also have a log burner - we need to start using it more I think!

To me it seems high - we pay £160 in a 3 bed semi
heating went on last week for first time but it’s only on low for 5 hours a day

Anyone?

So by contrast we are 2 adults, 2 DC in a large 4 bedroom. Our monthly electricity is £120-£130, not sure of gas yet. We both wfh do computers on all days, PS4 on for a few hours every day. We use electric oven every day and washing machine and dishwasher once a day. We only do 30 min washes but have been using tumble twice a week.

Amicompletelyinsane · 13/11/2022 15:52

But drafty 3 bed semi here. 2 adults 3 children. £110 for the same period. Haven't had heating on though

SellFridges · 13/11/2022 15:57

We use a similar amount of electricity and have an electric car that is charged at home. We do not scrimp on the tumble dryer either.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 13/11/2022 15:57

3 showers and 1 bath every day is going to be costing a huge amount! And having the heating on to do the drying.

Ignore cost really as obviously energy has doubled/tripled since last year, look at your unit usage from last year compared to this bill to see if you are using more/less/same number of units

converseandjeans · 13/11/2022 15:58

Ours went up from £110 to £370 based on what they predicted we would use. Hardly had our heating on so hoping it will go down. It's madness.

I think 3 showers a day will be pushing your price up.

neighboursmustliveon · 13/11/2022 16:03

Our bill for October was £160. We haven't needed to use our heating yet though. We don't have a tumble dryer and my husband works from home but the rest of us are out through the week.

It was £50 more than September for the same sort of usage (I guess lights we're probably on more, but not much).

Athenen0ctua · 13/11/2022 16:07

Seems very high to me. Our electric was just under 100kwh, gas 120kwh for October (1st-31st). I know your bill is further into the cold months, our gas looking to be double for November. That's for two of us in a three bed semi.

Sirpatrickdelaneypodmore · 13/11/2022 16:09

It’ll be the heating. I’ve been monitoring usage on our smart meter and everything else is small fry compared to the heating (apart from charging the car but I’ll assume no EV) All this unplugging chargers etc is just tinkering around the edges- it’s the heating definitely.

Dogsandbabies · 13/11/2022 16:11

Very high compared to ours. 2 adults and three children in 4 bed semi. Combined electricity and gas was £160 last month. Showers/baths every day and the thermostat set to 19.

Athenen0ctua · 13/11/2022 16:13

Our October bill was £60, combined.

BMW6 · 13/11/2022 16:17

Our October bills were Gas £38 Electric nil (after £66 credited)

2 adults in 2 bed terrace. Gas CH on most days at 19 degrees. Tumble drier use cut by about 80%.

ThatsRoughBuddy · 13/11/2022 16:25

I’d literally be crying if that was my bill. No way could I afford that.

Mine's a 4 bed end terrace with 2 adults (in all day) and 2 teens and after the £66 gov credit my bill was £20.

You'll have to get used to warming your body and not the whole house if you want to get your bills down.

Dreikanter · 13/11/2022 16:31

500 kWh of electricity in a month means that you’re a high user - we are a family of 3 adults in a modern 3 storey semi and use 230 kWh per month (no electric showers though and don’t use a tumble dryer)

AltheaVestr1t · 13/11/2022 16:34

Too much washing!! DC don't need a shower/bath every day.

FayeGovan · 13/11/2022 16:38

Of course they do. They dont stay 5 forever.

gogohmm · 13/11/2022 16:40

Ours was £153 in total, 3 bed townhouse 4 adults, don't work from home. Not had the heating on until this week

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 13/11/2022 16:41

AltheaVestr1t · 13/11/2022 16:34

Agree!

Wowzel · 13/11/2022 16:43

Your bill is almost exactly the same as ours - painful!!

Calmdown14 · 13/11/2022 16:45

Your electric use is very high.. double ours in a three bed terrace on an all electric system (in North Scotland).

We were £84 in October. That is without heating as haven't put it on yet and is a bit lower than usual due to a week away so if we say £100 yours is still higher and assuming some of the gas covers your hot water unlike ours?

Fullofpudding · 13/11/2022 16:45

This is mine for the month. If you're working from home you don't need clean clothes every day. We've cut down on baths or just having very quick showers. Also live in a Victorian house and just wearing more clothes and have thicker duvets on. Only washing what really needs washing really.

Is this bill stupidly high or about average?

Justwingingit2005 · 13/11/2022 16:46

OP we are a high elec use how. We use roughly the same as you. Its OK for everyone saying cut your usage but we have three teens, husband in an active job. Bodies and clothes need washing.
You can only cut down so much.
Prices have given crazy.
Little things we've done. Cut shower time even by a few mins, only use dishwasher once a week, no one touch the immersion heater and stop using tumble dryer.
Bills are crazy. Let's hope they do something about the price cap else it'll be higher next year

Mangogogogo · 13/11/2022 16:52

Is that with your £66 off too??

we have a huge detached home and ours was £270 then they took £66 off for the grant thingy
