Peter Kay tickets

Been reading about the thousands and thousands of people snapping up Peter Kay tickets, or , finding it difficult to get hold of them….
But in the same breath , everyone’s complaining about the “cost of living” , that they haven’t got the money for their energy bills/ mortgages/ food , etc, etc, but - Peter Kay tickets? - no problem, money found!
How does that work?
( I haven’t been trying to get tickets, by the way, much as I like him).

If budgets are that tight, where do you suddenly find the money ?

It's not expensive for someone at the top of the tree like him who everyone wants to see.
Supply and demand also. He won't be touring and making money all his life.

Shows cost alot to put on too

It's the journey and the parking that would put me off more. Trying to find where to park lol. Trying to find a loo on the way. Trying to get off the car park at the end of the evening.

Looking forward to the DVD though.

I'm at Glasgow Hydro next Saturday night for another show Westlife I got free parking and hospitality lounge access so no worries on parking or loos!
I'm in there a lot though, loos are never a problem, neither is parking, either you pay the £11 and suck it up or park further out and walk, or get public transport in.
At least The Hydro gives out free water with no hassle which other venues don't (Liverpool Arena/Manchester Arena/Royal Albert Hall to name 3)

Lol. Love the bragging about how unaffected by the COL crisis people are. So typical of the MN crowd that just loves to tell us how many holidays they've got planned and the £100,000 kitchen they've had installed.
The fact that bars, pubs, clubs, caribbean cruises are just as busy and popular as before is as much of a useless generalisation as suggesting everyone only has £5 left at the end of the month. Neither observations mean anything. Go to the home counties and it's life as usual, a dodgy area in Bolton not so much.

ThreeRingCircus · 13/11/2022 17:00

This is absolutely bonkers. Why do you assume the people now living hand to mouth are the same ones buying Peter Kay tickets?

I was lucky and managed to get two tickets for a Birmingham show. Cost just over £150 and is in 2024! That's ages away in terms of paying it off. I complain about the cost of living crisis because like everyone, food and other bills have become much more expensive. It doesn't mean I'm never allowed (or can't afford) to book a treat and have something to look forward to.

Like everything there will be some people living on the breadline, some with hundreds of thousands of pounds in the bank and most people somewhere in the middle (like me.)

What do you mean “that’s ages away in terms of paying it off”? (And other PP’s comments about it not being until 2023/4?)
If you buy tickets you pay for them now - not when the show is on surely?
I know people don’t always pay their credit card bill in full, but surely you don’t leave it until 2024 to pay for some tickets with 2 years worth of interest?

Just to clarify - I think the OP is ridiculous too - I just don’t understand this point!

RealBecca · 13/11/2022 17:51
  1. Not everyone is struggling.
  1. Loads of people saved money during covid.
  1. A lot of people are cutting big ticket items and every day spending. This is a middle ground - a memorable night out that isnt too expensive comparatively.
  1. Tis the season for consumerism.

Noone is making you go. Let other people spend on what makes them happy.

Roominmyhouse · 13/11/2022 17:55

I bought 2 tickets for 2024, cost me £149. I have the money to pay for it now and know if I change my mind between now and then I can easily sell them. But I don’t have children and have a small house. I don’t have lots of other luxuries other people do like cars on finance and like to spend my money on things like gigs and days out. Plenty of people can afford to buy tickets which are out of reach to others. That’s always the way.

glamourousindierockandroll · 13/11/2022 18:09

@CliffordMystery i don't know what is so hard to understand about the phrase "paying it off". If you have a credit card - some of which are 0% - you might buy something for £150 and then pay it off £20 per month. Just because you don't have much money, doesn't mean you don't have a great credit score and access to borrowing.

luxxlisbon · 13/11/2022 18:10

@jamdonut that they haven’t got the money for their energy bills/ mortgages/ food , etc, etc, but - Peter Kay tickets? - no problem, money found!
How does that work?

It would seem pretty obvious that the people who have no money for their bills or food don’t have money for comedy tickets and the people who do buy the tickets can afford the essentials too.

JustMarriedBecca · 13/11/2022 18:15

I don't think it's a silly thread. We are in Cheshire, very middle class professional area. People are still going to things but choosing one whereas maybe a few years ago they'd have gone to 4-5 a year.

Our school wreath session is a prime example. One year it sold out in 12 hours. This year we're struggling to sell tickets at the same price.

People are just prioritising as they see fit. No one is struggling to pay electricity and bills so far as I know but people are belt tightening.

OK, thanks, I understand how credit cards work - but I don’t see how the show being not on until 2024 means you have longer to pay it off. The credit card companies don’t make sure you’ve paid it off before you go to the show.

You could buy £150 tickets for a show that’s on today - it wouldn’t make any difference to how long you had to pay it off, would it?

NashvilleQueen · 13/11/2022 18:19

Some people might not spend on petrol and parking. They might get a return train ticket for £6 as I would if I was going to my local venue. In 2 years from now.

But theatre ticker football tickets ec are all aimilar price or more expensive.

I buy tickets as presents, something that doesnt take up space and is something to look forward to.

In the Spring DD and I are going to Twickenham to watch a womens Rugby match, we're spening a long weekend and doing other touristy things whist there. What we aren't doing is spending £££ and going abroad. The Twickenham tickets are part of DDs Christmas present.

Next week we're going to see the Nutcracker with my mum and having a meal out - I bought those tickets for my mums birthday as she's never seen it although always wanted to.

I'm at the upper end of low income, with proper planning I can still afford treats as I don't waste money on other things.

Enjoy!

I got Twickenham a couple of times a year (I was there yesterday) both for Men’s and Women’s matches - hope you all have a great time.

My DS is far too young, but I can’t wait to take him in a few years. His birthday is in February so will coincide with the Six Nations.

jamdonut · 13/11/2022 19:01

wellI I just wondered… I guess I am being a little judgmental. It’s not just these tickets…a new B&M store opened a fortnight ago nearby and it was ram-packed in there, people’s trolleys piled high and an awful lot of money being spent. But watch the TV or read the papers and people are apparently on their knees with no spare money. I don’t consider myself to be struggling, though I’m by no means comfortable. But I’m not spending unnecessarily either. I had a couple of days away recently, my first ‘holiday’ in God knows how long, but that was as part of a Christmas present from my daughter, from last year. I wouldn’t have gone out of my way to book one, otherwise.
There are loads of things I’d like to do or places to go, but some things are just out of reach at present. I’d rather make sure my bills are covered.

@CliffordMystery I guess it's just a mental way of coping with manageable debt knowing that by the time it comes around, you can enjoy it knowing that it's paid for.

wentworthinmate · 14/11/2022 19:09

I managed to get tickets for June 2025!!!

I haven’t got any money to spare and am always overdrawn every month.

I also haven’t purchased Peter Kay tickets.

I hope this clears things up for you a bit.

Because we aren't work horses and we deserve a bit of bloody enjoyment

AnApparitionQuipped · 15/11/2022 12:32

There was a similar Peter Kay thread to this the other day. In a nutshell 'struggling' means different things to different people. Some people still have what others would see as a lot of disposable income, even if it might have halved.

SenseFromThoughtDivide · 22/11/2022 23:35

Great! So we have Peter Kay tickets for the 16th December. Guess when a rail strike is planned
