To say that jam sandwiches...

Like peanut butter or Marmite sandwiches, should be made with one slice of bread folded in half and slightly squashed. They just taste better that way. Not two slices and cut in half!

Lighthearted, obviously, after seeing DS make jam sandwiches to take to football and slicing them in half. I obviously went wrong somewhere Grin

Jam sandwiches should be put in the bin where they belong!
But with the top tier marmite sandwich yabvu, 2 slices, cut in half (not diagonal!).

Norriscolesbag · 12/11/2022 10:22

I don’t have much opinion on this OP only to say my dad once went ballistic at me for making my brother jam sandwiches for his packed lunch. (My brother has autism). My mum also goes on about a party I went to as a child where jam sandwiches were served and it was clear the parent had tried but there was clearly no money.

So just to randomly say there is a real snobbery about them in this area- interestingly I bet the upper classes quite happily eat these!!

hidingmyusername · 12/11/2022 10:52

I'm not fussy about cutting vs folding but it is ESSENTIAL that the butter (real) and jam (raspberry) must go fully to the edges of the bread. Smile

This.

I agree op.

Conkersareback · 12/11/2022 10:59

Ridiculous suggestion, jam sandwiches are two slices of bread and cut into four and squares not triangles!

littlepeas · 12/11/2022 11:02

I think the best sandwich my ds has ever eaten was a jam baguette when on a school residential to Snowdonia - eating a jam baguette at the top of Tarren y Gasail was the highlight of that trip.

Yellowdahlia12 · 12/11/2022 11:02

The late queen used to eat 'jam pennies.' Basically, jam sandwiches cut into circles with a cutter.
The shape doesn't matter - the essential ingredients are good butter and ideally home made jam with plenty of fruit.

Charleymouse · 12/11/2022 11:12

No jam sandwiches are made exactly like that. Two slices of buttered bread sliced in half to make rectangles.

Jam pockets which is what we have are a slice of bread, buttered with plenty of jam and butter then folded in half to create a pocket of gooey buttery jam.
Less sides for ooze to occur. Simple's.

Sandwiches are posh.

Pockets are cool.

As a child, I was convinced this was how Paddington Bear made his sandwiches. If I ever asked for a Paddington Bear sandwich for tea on a Sunday, it always had to be folded over, not cut

MassiveWordSalad · 12/11/2022 11:22

We actually have a term for this type of sandwich in our house. It's a "Foldover" Grin

ShinyMe · 12/11/2022 11:42

You know what's better than a jam sandwich? A jam sandwich soaked in egg and fried in butter. Jam sandwich eggy bread for the WIN.

StickySnotBalls · 12/11/2022 11:47

I agree @BearSoFair but @ShinyMe how in God's name did you discover that masterpiece?

ShinyMe · 12/11/2022 11:55

I think I saw Nigella do it once. If she didn't, then it's the kind of thing she would do. Nutella eggy bread works well too.

slowquickstep · 12/11/2022 11:59

A "jeely piece" as we call it here is the food of the gods

Clarinet1 · 12/11/2022 11:59

Of course, if you’re an Enid Blyton character going on a picnic or back
to boarding school, a jam sandwich is a Victoria Sponge-type cake!

slowquickstep · 12/11/2022 12:01

Billy Connolly even sang a song about Jeely pieces

Magpiecomplex · 12/11/2022 12:02

@ShinyMe and @StickySnotBalls that's what I know as a "camp doughnut", from many years of Guide camps

MightyAtlantic · 12/11/2022 12:03

If it's folded over it's not a sandwich, it's just a slice of bread and jam. Confused

Foxfeeder · 12/11/2022 12:04

I’ve not had one for many years, and I am ambivalent about folding vs cutting, but raspberry jam and cheddar cheese sandwiches (without butter) are delicious.

Butter and sugar sandwiches were also highly regarded in our house when I was growing up in the 70’s, but less likely now because of the sugar content I imagine.

Hobbesmanc · 12/11/2022 12:07

I had crusty bread with thick lurpak and jam for lunch and it was lush. That's just a jam sandwich right.

Then you need to look up campfire doughnuts!

Unicorn1919 · 12/11/2022 12:14

I love jam sandwiches, but always two slices of bread and then cut into four small squares.

libraryday · 12/11/2022 12:29

Craving a marmite sandwich now.
My DD used to eat jam, ham & cheese in a sandwich. She has grown out of that thank goodness.

StickySnotBalls · 12/11/2022 12:30

Lush @kateandme I'll be trying those!
