To say that jam sandwiches...

Like peanut butter or Marmite sandwiches, should be made with one slice of bread folded in half and slightly squashed. They just taste better that way. Not two slices and cut in half!

Lighthearted, obviously, after seeing DS make jam sandwiches to take to football and slicing them in half. I obviously went wrong somewhere Grin

Ridiculous suggestion, jam sandwiches are two slices of bread and cut into four and squares not triangles!

This is also more acceptable than halves!

Hm.. I'm not sure what I think about the batter to be honest. I do mine in just egg, and soak it in, rather than dunk it. But I am a huge fan of eggy bread.

Craving a marmite sandwich now.
My DD used to eat jam, ham & cheese in a sandwich. She has grown out of that thank goodness.

My FIL eats marmalade, jam and a thick slice of cheddar. First time I saw it I was shocked.

Now it is my regular go-to home lunch. Grin

WinterLobelia · 12/11/2022 12:32

*marmalade, HAM and cheddar I meant!

I’ve not had one for many years, and I am ambivalent about folding vs cutting, but raspberry jam and cheddar cheese sandwiches (without butter) are delicious.

Butter and sugar sandwiches were also highly regarded in our house when I was growing up in the 70’s, but less likely now because of the sugar content I imagine.

I'm quite tempted by that...everything is better with cheese!

Lush @kateandme I'll be trying those!

I’m so happy for you!☺️

kateandme · 12/11/2022 12:45

It needs to be cheese and marmite though.
and a particular kind of white bread.
it also must be strawberry jam

Tashface · 12/11/2022 12:49

OP, I agree wholeheartedly with your method of making jam sandwiches (one slice, folded, squashed).

But all this thinking has made me realise that following exactly the same method, but folding corner to corner (so a triangle) would be an equally awesome variation. Never tried it but will be doing later on!

In Norway they are very partial to a jam and cheese sandwich.
look up their caramel brown cheese!

Georgeskitchen · 12/11/2022 12:49

Any which way is fine as long as its on freshly opened, thick sliced white Warburtons bread 😋😋

I don’t have much opinion on this OP only to say my dad once went ballistic at me for making my brother jam sandwiches for his packed lunch. (My brother has autism). My mum also goes on about a party I went to as a child where jam sandwiches were served and it was clear the parent had tried but there was clearly no money.

So just to randomly say there is a real snobbery about them in this area- interestingly I bet the upper classes quite happily eat these!!

Anecdotally, jam sandwiches seem to be making a comeback at children's parties around here. They're popular with the kids, an easy choice for hall parties and suitable for most dietary requirements (e.g. dairy-free, can make with GF bread). I'd say more than half the parties we've been to recently have had jam sandwiches.

You know what's better than a jam sandwich? A jam sandwich soaked in egg and fried in butter. Jam sandwich eggy bread for the WIN.

Why, oh why have I never thought of doing this? You are a culinary genius, @ShinyMe .

AitkenDrum1970 · 12/11/2022 13:07

Folded sandwiches are definitely the best, but only works with sliced bread!

I’m now wondering though if this could work for Biscoff spread too.I should not have turned into this thread

DorritLittle · 12/11/2022 13:17

Agree actually. Folded, rushy jam sandwiches are better!

Didn’t the Queen for at them every day?

KatherineJaneway · 12/11/2022 13:37

Bread and jam was forced on me for dinner every day for years so I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole

Basecamp · 12/11/2022 13:44

Jam sandwiches are nasty little things.

Dreamstosell · 12/11/2022 13:47

Called a piece ‘n’ jam here. Jam sandwich was a cake

@WinterLobelia that is weirder than my DDs choice 😬

Topbird29 · 12/11/2022 14:19

Am guessing with jam, cheese and ham the jam is like a very sweet chutney.
Might depend on the flavour of jam I suppose!
