Mine are:

Feature Walls
Pampas Grass
Crushed Velvet
Hanging Lights - all on the same beam
Shiny furniture

My house is white and I love it - contrasted with darker wood, artwork, plants and colour from things like cushions etc. and to some that’s absolutely boring and that’s ok.

@herdingcatss you’ve just reminded me of another one; washing machines in kitchens?!? What the hell.

I love when someone posts like they are so utterly privalaged that they think everyone has a home where they can store the washing machine elsewhere and that this is a choice, doesn’t everyone have utility rooms , laundry rooms or large enough bathrooms to store them. 😂

Ketzele · 14/11/2022 12:25

I have wood-effect laminate worktops too, @stestemthetide, and beige gloss cabinets, and vinyl flooring. I wouldn't have chosen any of them, but can't afford to change them any time soon.
Actually, I've never been in a position to put in a new kitchen, or redo a house properly. My obsession and my delight is interior design on an absolute shoestring. That means constant compromise but also pulls the creativity out of you.

CharlotteByrde · 14/11/2022 12:32

Washing machines in the kitchen are standard for most homes. Stop showing off. A couple of posters have also managed stealth brags about their gorgeous gardens and bay windows too. Lovely for them. Unattainable for many.

BlueKaftan · 14/11/2022 12:33

We have no choice but to have our washing machine in the kitchen. I used to hate it but I don’t think about it anymore.

HintofVintagePink · 14/11/2022 12:33

We considered a laundry chute but the building regulations to put one in are surprisingly strict!

I did see a YouTube video recently of a laundry chute with multiple openings that sort of sucked the laundry in if you threw it as you went by. Amazing.

Sorry. As you were…

Washing machines in kitchens aren't an interior design choice if you don't have a utility. Where should we have put it, the living room?!

I know. It's a ridiculous thing to want! Harks back to my time living in the US. They've always fascinated me, for some weird reason I can't describe.

Buteverythingsfine · 14/11/2022 12:49

Washing machines are usually in kitchens because of the plumbing! Unless you have a utility or a large bathroom. That said I did once have a property with a large cupboard in the kitchen purpose-built for the washing machine, tumble drier on the top and you could shove the washing powder in there too. It didn't take up much floor space and I'd have that design again.

Fivecluckyhens · 14/11/2022 12:49

Carpeted flooring in the bathroom.
Too much grey.
Eyelet curtains.
The fake ivy in my daughters bedroom.
Multiple fridge magnets with memes on them.
Glossy modern kitchens

I love houses with character and individuality.

Beammeupdude · 14/11/2022 13:06

Oooo interesting thread. My design bugs are:

Too many pagan artifacts

Slave toilet/sex swing on display anywhere other than the dungeon

Imitation parquet flooring made from lasagne sheets

Sentient wardrobes

Gérard Depardieu

Wallpaper on the portcullis

Boarded up windows

Candle lit shrines to Bob Carolgees

The fire of Hades.

So tacky, so passé etc.

“I own a very very old house. Like no one knows how old. It's not listed as before the listing lady arrived it had had all of its interesting stuff either completely pulled out or just really badly damaged and covered in cement in the 1950s / 60s.”

I think it’s more likely that it is not worth being listed because it has been ruined. Buildings that are listed have generally been protected and looked after well. Some may even have survived due to falling into disrepair BUT importantly not ruined by unsympathetic
“restoration”.

Our house is very old and listed. It is part of a village where most of the houses are listed and protected for posterity.

It really depends when it was listed. Some houses in some areas were deemed of historic significance fairly late in the process. Ours was listed after it had been more than ruined. Somewhat ironically, what then happens, is that all the 'restored' features are protected. We had to fight, for example, to remove 70s vinyl exterior shutters from our Georgian house as they were existent when it was listed.

The one thing I absolutely hate above everything is mounted animal heads, often stags. They're creepy and completely vulgar in my opinion and I'd rather any other thing in my house than this.

KimberleyClark · 14/11/2022 13:16

We’ e got a fridge/freezer covered with fridge magnets - but it’s kept out of sight in the garage!

Whereisthehugeteddybear · 14/11/2022 13:19

I think there's a difference between having different tastes (in terms of colour schemes, style of kitchen, fabrics and soft furnishings etc) or not liking certain trends ...and being snobby about certain shops and making assumptions/judgements based on a person's house (they haven't travelled, they haven't read their books for 10 years/no imagination are a few mentioned)

Where do you live? It's pretty standard in the UK to have one in the kitchen.

I love fridge magnets but I don't buy any old thing. They have to be fun or have a cool design to my eye, not some tack. I do have to get one from everywhere I go but I stick the more obviously souvenir-y ones on the side of the fridge and not the front so less visible! But I still have to like them or they don't go up.

Totally agree!

NCFT0922 · 14/11/2022 13:31

@herdingcatss Yorkshire. I’ve always had a utility room, even growing up in a council house there was a small utility room next to the kitchen. A PP mentioned privilege with having a laundry room but, as I just said, I grew up in a council house and all the houses on our street were the same design and all had utility room. More of a large storage cupboard than a room really but still a separate laundry space.

Cattenberg · 14/11/2022 13:34

KimberleyClark · 14/11/2022 11:15

I loathe the saying about the kitchen being the heart of the home. It might be if you have a huge kitchen where you entertain your friends to kitchen suppers, but not if you live in a bog standard semi with a galley kitchen. Then it’s the place you store, prepare and cook food.

Yes, that’s been the case in almost every place I’ve lived in. The kitchen is a boring, functional place, where the cooking, washing up and laundry get done and where cats eat their smelly food.

As I’m used to this set up, I prefer it. I hate the thought of having small children under my feet while I cook.

mamabear715 · 14/11/2022 13:34

PEEING myself, @Beammeupdude :-)

XingMing · 14/11/2022 13:44

@GasPanic Guilty of the giant wall clock in the kitchen, but does having owned it for 20 years plus excuse/eradicate some of the taint?

I have a large collection of tacky fridge magnets. I'm particularly partial to a wobbly crab!

Buteverythingsfine · 14/11/2022 13:55

My washing machine is in my tiny bathroom. I find it so much easier than carrying everything downstairs, washing it and carrying it all back up to put it away. In my opionion it is totally illogical to have the washing machine on the ground floor. I get changed in the bathroom now and throw the dirty clothes straight in the machine - saves so much time.
