Mine are:

Feature Walls
Pampas Grass
Crushed Velvet
Hanging Lights - all on the same beam
Shiny furniture

My house is white and I love it - contrasted with darker wood, artwork, plants and colour from things like cushions etc. and to some that’s absolutely boring and that’s ok.

@Luredbyapomegranate Sorry! I’ll always double-tap like that sort of thing on Instagram, weirdly, as it does appeal, but my thoughts on this thread are more that I couldn’t live with it for a moment – I’d itch for calmer surroundings.

(I aim for a sort of “make a monk uncomfortable” moody minimalism that only works in magazines and not with actual humans living there needing a cup of tea and a sit down.)

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 13/11/2022 19:29

Guilty of so many of these things 😂.

But in defence of all the people with badly positioned wall mounted tv’s…ours are because the walls in our not very old house are utter shite and getting anything to grab is nigh on impossible-you have to catch a cross beam and that’s not always where you want it to be.

For me I dislike stark, minimalist, unlived in look. I like a homely house, where it’s obvious people live there.

Wooden legs on any seating? Does this mean you only accept chairs with metal or plastic legs? Is it an aesthetic thing, or a safety thing? 🤔

You see I don’t like sofas and armchairs with no legs / only tiny feet

Also don’t like beds with no legs

It’s claustrophobic.

I am realising I am a lot more strident than I thought..

See, Nigella does stripy carpets on stairs and I was thinking that one day I might get some? Are they bad then?

@herecomesthsun

its a set

I don’t think they are bad tho

Notforbeef · 13/11/2022 19:32

How about "each to their own"? I don't give a shit what the trend is. If I like it and it fits in my house I will have it and I don't judge others for their choices either.

Schmermaid · 13/11/2022 19:33

Clutter. Everything behind a door or in a drawer. Don’t care what the cupboards or drawers look like inside, as long as I can’t see it outside.

Supersimkin2 · 13/11/2022 19:34

Dying plants. Straggly orchids.
Grey - mine is all grey at the mo and it is soothing, but magnolia is brighter and also soporific
People trying to be individual - you don’t need to try, yooneekness is the very point of being human
Smell of children or dogs’ bad breath
Nervy/aggressive large pet/child hovering

Never have a cat and white floors. I did this. Paw prints are sweet but the cat litter spraying is not.

I think this thread is not for you

People are being quite jolly and not rude anyhow

Luncheonmeatsandwich · 13/11/2022 19:38

Does anyone still have 'live ,love, laugh' quotes on the walls? I thought that was very 2010.

I'm so over panelling. It's everywhere. And dark wallpaper in downstairs toilets and gold taps. They're going to date so quickly.

Frankola · 13/11/2022 19:39

Mirrored furniture

Unprecedentedusername · 13/11/2022 19:40

It looks like nigella has gone Roger Oates striped runner.

Lily4444 · 13/11/2022 19:40

Open plan - hate it! I want to watch tv not listen to someone’s kids screeching from the open room and the sound magnifying everything. Plus it’s cold!

floors everywhere - living rooms and bedrooms should have carpet to keep them warm and cosy

shiny cabinets - urh! Just no!

honeylulu · 13/11/2022 19:40

All white walls - feels like you're in the gynaecologist's clinic.
Crushed velvet and fluffy cushions - Barbie's dream house vibe.
Massive kitchen diners with the actual kitchen squished into a tiny utility room sized area. Looked around a gorgeous house a few years ago like that. Barely any worktop space. Mentioned to estate agent, he said "erm I don't think they really cook much."
En suites - don't want my bedroom to be damp and smell of shit. Current house has three bathrooms, none of them open off a bedroom.
Period houses with all original features ripped out and replaced with modern. Just buy a new build already!
Grey. So depressing.
White/cream carpet, especially on stairs. Just no! Dark patterned stair carpet is the practical choice unless you want to sirens your life shampooingand having no kids ever
Kitchen cupboards/units with gaps on top. Get greasy/sticky/dusty and you end up storing stuff on top in full view which looks a mess. When we did our kitchen it was a given that the units went right up to the ceiling.

Light coloured fabric sofas - grub magnets.

herecomesthsun · 13/11/2022 19:42

@Luredbyapomegranate Well, the point is, re the stair carpets, that I thought they looked really nice! whether or not that is a set.

(I think the set/s were based on her real house to a significant extent, for what it's worth)

Thewildling · 13/11/2022 19:43

A painted wall as a splashback in the kitchen… great at first until all the grease splashes sit behind the hob.

Oh and I hate curtains "puddling" on the floor (or "dibbling" as I call it). Looks like you had too many sherries and didn't measure correctly. The look of them always makes me think of the dust and hair getting swept up in them (boak). Just a couple of mm off the floor is perfect.

jetadore · 13/11/2022 19:46

Socksey · 13/11/2022 18:33

And ensuites.... who want to sleep by a toilet ?????

Have you heard of these amazing things called doors? (And extractor fans if smells are an issue in your household?)

VeronicaFranklin · 13/11/2022 19:46

Grey and white everything....so many instahome accounts are literally all rooms in the house grey and white, we have Mrs Hinch to thank for that I feel!

Puddinandpie · 13/11/2022 19:49

Blimey for all of you saying you hate panelling you'd hate mine I've got panelling everywhere in and it wasn't there when we moved in, we put it up, mind you it isn't a modern house it's an 1860s gothic victorian, so would have had panelling previously anyway!

cookiemonster66 · 13/11/2022 19:52

white gloss woodwork - so 70's / 80's and woodchip wallpaper

stuntbubbles · 13/11/2022 19:53

@Puddinandpie That looks great! And it’s legit, even if you installed it. When I think of panelling I hate, it’s in low-ceilinged new build with shitty DIY panelling feature walls where they’ve stuck MDF strips everywhere in big squares. And you know in a few years someone will come along and rip it out again: it’s all just so wasteful.

Mia184 · 13/11/2022 19:53

Shabby chic (I am German and it may be a German “phenomenon”)
TV above fireplace
Framed inspirational quotes on wall
sofas with extremely low back rests

angela99999 · 13/11/2022 19:54

Orange or peach walls. Beige or magnolia paint.

Petlover9 · 13/11/2022 19:58

FatCatSkinnyRat · 12/11/2022 05:46

Oh, and grey anything. Why!?!?

Some designer said it was the in colour and masses followed. I agree with you, it is dreary , boring, cold and dismal
