To be uncomfortable with the Mail Online doxing people

NotAKnowitall · 11/11/2022 15:30

I know I'm already being unreasonable by reading the Daily Fail, I'm sorry. I don't usually and I swear when I do it's more of a "ffs, what are the tories pushing this time". I certainly don't read it for facts.

Anyway. I've looked at the Mail Online website a few times this month and have noticed an ongoing trend of doxing people. The one I've noticed today is the women who shouted at the presenter on the news yesterday ("do you love fossil fuel more than your kids").

For those who don't know what doxing is, I've copied and pasted these definitions:

Search for and publish private or identifying information about (a particular individual) on the internet, typically with malicious intent

And

Doxing (or doxxing) is the act of releasing personal information about an individual with the aim of outing their true identity, embarrassing them publicly, or taking personal or political revenge. The meaning of doxing can be traced to the term “dropping docs,” with doxing attacks seeking to expose the personal information or identity of targeted individuals.

So now we all know what doxing is.

The Mail Online have just released an article about the young woman which I feel has crossed the line (not the first time) and I just feel sick about it to be honest. They've obviously done it maliciously because of her views (which are obviously different than those of a tory paper) and to send their hate army her way. Right now, they've listed her parent's names, brother's names, where she grew up in south wales, middle name of one of her brothers, what her brother does for a living, how much the family home is worth, old university, what her job is, her past employment, her full name. I know a google search will probably show some of this information anyway but this is a full on witch hunt orchestrated by the Mail Online as punishment for her political views.

I've noticed with these tory rags, it's a constant stream of doxing individuals whose political beliefs don't align with theirs while blatantly ignoring the people who are actually doing something wrong. Where's the article about the tory donor (with links to Kwasi) who shorted the pound? The story about ERG subs paid for by the tax payer? Story about any of the corruption scandals involving any of the tory donors? There may be one article released here and there regarding those but it's never written with so many personal details or to incite this much hatred. Aibu to be this fed up of it or has it just become normalised now.

A witch hunt orchestrated by the Mail as punishment, or an exposition of her immense hypocrisy?

REporting her name and her last job is hardly bizarre or unusual, is it? She put herself out there...

monsteronahill · 11/11/2022 15:39

I read it as more exposing the hypocrisy of someone happy to travel thousands of miles creating emissions for holidays vs protesting against motorists. She's put herself in the public eye on purpose on a tv show to raise awareness for her "cause" so must expect some sort of background information about her life will come out, especially if it's contrary to what she preaches now. It's all fairly easily to find information that's in the public domain, they've not gone digging and unearthed anything that anyone else couldn't find.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 11/11/2022 15:42

That is not doxxing.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 11/11/2022 15:43

Also Tory rags aren’t going to go all in on tories. Try the Guardian.

Tara336 · 11/11/2022 15:44

Just had a look, not sure her family details should be posted but let's be honest she's been exposed as a massive hypocrite, if your going to go on TV I guess it's to be expected the press are going to dig about and see what they can find

Agree with @monsteronahill - she wants to be in the public eye, then she risks having her obvious hypocrisy exposed.

MichelleScarn · 11/11/2022 15:45

Is it just this paper you don't agree with doing this? If the Guardian posted a story about someone presenting differently and because they were a tory, would you he annoyed. Should the corrupt tory donors not have been exposed or is that OK as you dont like them?

Eastangular2000 · 11/11/2022 15:46

As a pp said. That’s not doxxing. Her name and identity were public knowledge and she chose to go on the news. She is however a dreadful hypocrite and a terrible communicator

WifeMotherWorker · 11/11/2022 15:48

They have exposed her hypocrisy and made her look even more foolish after her infantile tantrum on national TV.
I don’t see the issue!

GinaDonatella · 11/11/2022 15:49

This is probably all information on her Facebook profile apart from the house price which they've probably done "average price" zoopla estimate

NotAKnowitall · 11/11/2022 15:50

The names of her parents and brothers, the location of her family home etc. Is it fair to post those details?

I'm not sure her past travels is fair to bring up to be honest. She may have travelled and then learnt about her cause as she got older. I mean, if someone came out and said "I'm a vegetarian now", noone starts sending hate or calling them a hypocrite because they used to eat meat do they? It's very bizarre to think she's held this view about fossil fuel her whole life. People are certainly allowed to grow and change their way of thinking. It would only be hypocritical if she was still travelling which there's no evidence of.

And what possible excuse is there for publishing the below? They're not involved and may not even agree with her!

her parent's names, brother's names middle name of one of her brothers, what her brother does for a living, how much the family home is worth

Oysterbabe · 11/11/2022 15:52

No sympathy from me. Now she's been exposed as a hypocrite hopefully she'll fuck off.

SalmonOnTheRock · 11/11/2022 15:53

Deserves everything they get. IMO

The sibling is interesting. I remember Michael Moore saying he was horribly ashamed once because he was mean to one of the Bush sisters who wasn't in politics and seemed like a nice woman.

I thought it showed a lot of cases to admit he'd been an idiot. The Mail publishing details of people who aren't even peripherally involved does seem wrong.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/11/2022 15:55

Class not cases!

Whitney168 · 11/11/2022 15:56

If they become vegetarian and go quietly about their business without trying to tell the rest of the world the error its ways, no of course not.

If, however, they get in everyone's face and cause disruption, telling everyone that they are wrong, then ...

Since she was protesting about Heathrows third runway BEFORE jetting off to Nepal, it's very relevant, yes. A bit like someone becoming a miltant vegan and then eating a massive rare steak. And posting about it on Facebook.

LBFseBrom · 11/11/2022 15:59

The Mail is a dreadful, scurrilous rag.

It will trash anyone's reputation with half truths, anecdotes, taking things out of context, hyperbole and lies. At an earlier date they will have built the same person up!

It makes me glad I am not famous. However they will dig at people who are not famous too.

Unfortunately many people believe what they read and join in with the condemnation.

Justcallmebebes · 11/11/2022 16:01

Or you could say they were doing their jobs as investigative reporters, i.e. investigating and reporting

WifeMotherWorker · 11/11/2022 16:02

OP I’m not sure why you are defending the indefensible?!? She and her cohorts have caused massive disruption (innocent people have missed cancer treatment, work and even their fathers funeral) while people are sitting idle in their cars or taking massive detours both contributing to unnecessary additional emissions. She, like the rest of the eco-terrorists (milk spilling, soup and glue in art galleries, pouring human waste on Sir Toms stature) should be exposed as hypocrites as they all seem to be professional middle class university protesters, I suppose it’s easier than real work!
I hope the media continues to expose them all. It’s like they have been indoctrinated into a cult.

Dixiechickonhols · 11/11/2022 16:07

The travel is relevant to the issue though, a stop oil protestor who travels extensively. All publicly available, they have probably only trawled her instagram.
The brother info is irrelevant and no reason to share. We can’t choose our family.
Many years ago I was involved through work with Manchester airport protestors and many were posh privately educated - you need to be being supported by parents or trust fund to be none working in your 20s and able to fund lifestyle travelling to various protests.

GreyTS · 11/11/2022 16:08

I cannot bear the Mail, and it's like, but sorry it's fair enough.....they are actually just mirroring the tactics these groups use themselves. Shut down all debate by having those with opposing views 'cancelled' so I'm glad to see their hypocrisy revealed. Bunch of rich kids who think their opinions are the only ones worthy of being listened too. And this is from a former rich kid who thought that I was the only one with an original thought or opinion

LaGioconda · 11/11/2022 16:14

Justcallmebebes · 11/11/2022 16:01

But OP is right, they only ever do this to people they dislike politically. They would keep their heads well done if this was a Tory supporter, so clearly the motivation is anything but pure journalism.

They have a long history of this sort of activity - they may have exposed a degree of hypocrisy in this case, but they have no hesitation in sending their reporters out to try to trash the reputation of anyone who dares to express the view that their political hero of the moment is less than perfect. They are utter hypocrites.

midsomermurderess · 11/11/2022 16:17

For heaven’s sake. Read the Mail or don’t. Why do you feel you need to apologise to strangers? Odd.
