To be uncomfortable with the Mail Online doxing people

NotAKnowitall · 11/11/2022 15:30

I know I'm already being unreasonable by reading the Daily Fail, I'm sorry. I don't usually and I swear when I do it's more of a "ffs, what are the tories pushing this time". I certainly don't read it for facts.

Anyway. I've looked at the Mail Online website a few times this month and have noticed an ongoing trend of doxing people. The one I've noticed today is the women who shouted at the presenter on the news yesterday ("do you love fossil fuel more than your kids").

For those who don't know what doxing is, I've copied and pasted these definitions:

Search for and publish private or identifying information about (a particular individual) on the internet, typically with malicious intent

And

Doxing (or doxxing) is the act of releasing personal information about an individual with the aim of outing their true identity, embarrassing them publicly, or taking personal or political revenge. The meaning of doxing can be traced to the term “dropping docs,” with doxing attacks seeking to expose the personal information or identity of targeted individuals.

So now we all know what doxing is.

The Mail Online have just released an article about the young woman which I feel has crossed the line (not the first time) and I just feel sick about it to be honest. They've obviously done it maliciously because of her views (which are obviously different than those of a tory paper) and to send their hate army her way. Right now, they've listed her parent's names, brother's names, where she grew up in south wales, middle name of one of her brothers, what her brother does for a living, how much the family home is worth, old university, what her job is, her past employment, her full name. I know a google search will probably show some of this information anyway but this is a full on witch hunt orchestrated by the Mail Online as punishment for her political views.

I've noticed with these tory rags, it's a constant stream of doxing individuals whose political beliefs don't align with theirs while blatantly ignoring the people who are actually doing something wrong. Where's the article about the tory donor (with links to Kwasi) who shorted the pound? The story about ERG subs paid for by the tax payer? Story about any of the corruption scandals involving any of the tory donors? There may be one article released here and there regarding those but it's never written with so many personal details or to incite this much hatred. Aibu to be this fed up of it or has it just become normalised now.

"I'm utterly disgusted with the Mail Online that I definitely don't usually read because it's a filthy rag but have read several times this month"

That's what everyone on here says when they're quoting something from the DM

Jijithecat · 11/11/2022 17:29

I've just skim read the Mail article, which helpfully the OP pointed me in the direction of. They cite their sources as her Facebook and Instagram. This is publicly viewable information. Had they hacked into her accounts that would have been doxxing but evidently she is comfortable with people being able to view her accounts otherwise she would have put privacy controls in place. They take seconds to set up.

CorvusPurpureus · 11/11/2022 17:36

Taking the piss out of her brother's middle name being Bede is definitely having a poke at her family for being a bit full of themselves.

My kids all have fairly pretentious middle names with which the Mail would, no doubt, have a bit of fun, should one of them be as idiotic as Indigo. We would get over it.

The salient facts are that she's a wally & a hypocrite, based on information in the public domain. No doxxing here. She hasn't sought anonymity, & the DM haven't said anything that isn't public information.

Doxxing would be, for example, if Indigo was whistle blowing about stuff anonymously, & then someone outed her. This is not doxxing, although it might be yellow journalism if the DM have not been truthful.

NotAKnowitall · 11/11/2022 17:41

DrMarciaFieldstone · 11/11/2022 17:20

So basically, you agree with her? And everyone else is just being mean?

I didn't say that at all. I'm merely pointing out that the cries of her being a hypocrite are unfair. I'm just not the type of person to call someone a hypocrite without doing a bit of research first. "Stop issuing new licences" does not mean "noone is ever allowed to fly on a plane".

Are we going back to my actual point yet or what?

OP posts:
Dixiechickonhols · 11/11/2022 17:46

But your actual point seems to be that the newspaper shouldn’t have shared info already in public domain - everything in article is info she’s wanted people to know about herself or public record (her arrests)
If you are presenting in a certain way but acting in your life in a contrary way that’s always been something press would expose nothing new eg politicians having their affairs exposed while standing for family values.

😆 very much so! "I never read the 'fail' but ooo look what I found when reading it, aren't I fab!"

Feysriana · 11/11/2022 17:56

Yanbu when it’s clearly done by a powerful organisation to incite hatred and hate mail against an individual.

Yabu if it’s doxing by eg revealing the real name of a male-bodied rapist who’s trying to get sent to a woman’s prison and doesn’t want anyone to know his male name.

HeraldicBlazoning · 11/11/2022 17:56

But they haven't doxxed her.

Doxxing would be saying "Eco Crusty lives at 124 High Street, Reading. Her mobile number is X, her DOB is Y. Her dad is called Richard Crusty, he works at this address and her mum's name is Brenda."

The Mail article gives the rough area where she is from, and has posted pictures showing up her hypocrisy by travelling to Nepal on multiple occasions. Unless you believe she walked there. And back.

Loics · 11/11/2022 18:02

They haven't doxxed her - no address, phone number or email address. They've only found information that is easily discoverable in the public domain and collated it.

Loics · 11/11/2022 18:04

Posted too soon - if it's the one who was wailing above the M25, patronising everyone while making her Oscar attempt, she put herself out there, as I've said before, should have locked down social media before being a condescending, hypocritical so-and-so.

TheSomersetGimp · 11/11/2022 18:06

Well she put herself out there. She'll be the next Greta with her hysteria passion.

FrippEnos · 11/11/2022 18:07

YABU for seemingly thinking that only the right wing do this.

Plenty of left wing papers have doxed people over the years, outed gays and hounded innocent people to their death.

As an example of actual doxing look at libs of tiktok doxed by the left.

NewBootsAndRanty · 11/11/2022 18:13

When i was involved in environmental activism, it was standard to sign a no fly pledge. That was 15 years ago..

Quite right too. Activists wouldn't want to be seen as absolute hypocrites would they. Too many of them are though.

100% spot on comment.

PS: OP people keep responding to your original point, and you have been told multiple times that the DM haven’t doxed this individual. Perhaps you don’t understand the terminology??

Justanotherlurker · 11/11/2022 19:31

She hasn't been doxed, also why pretend you don't read the daily mail but have checked it a couple of times already in 11 days. Just admit you read it and want to have something to be outraged at (hence this thread).

You are no better than those 'regular readers' you look down on, you clearly don't understand what doxing is...

NotAKnowitall · 12/11/2022 08:00

This absolutely is a form of doxing, just not the widely known version of 'IP doxing'. It's 'social media doxing' which is now much more prevalent considering everyone has social media.

Doxing involves researching and gathering information posted online by the victim with the purpose being to either expose that person to legal prosecution, to embarrass the victim, to draw criticism towards that person, incite a mass campaign of public shaming or to cause them physical harm. It does not have to involve hacking and can be someone simply gathering information from social media. Actual addresses and phone numbers are not needed for it to be classed as doxing and can simply include your photos, likes and dislikes, names of family members, friends, location, place of work, places you've visited etc. The purpose of gathering this information is the important bit.

Yes newspapers usually print names and locations but to also print her parent's names, brother's names, her family's home town (not where she lives), old uni, her parent's house value, old photos etc with the sole purpose of embarrassing, shaming and drawing criticism towards her (and her family) is doxing. Like my original post said, the papers (either left or right, it doesn't matter at this point) routinely do this to people whose political ideas don't align with theirs and it's not right.

The doxing in this case is being justified because the victim I used as an example "is a hypocrite". It really doesn't seem like she is being a hypocrite actually. Just Stop Oil is not saying "don't fly on planes" or even "don't drive cars". Literally nothing about travelling. They want the government to stop granting new licences to fossil fuel companies to look and drill for new oil. Please do look into it before contributing to the hate. Again, I'm not a supporter of Just Stop Oil, nor do I agree with how they protest. I'm just a fair person who looks at facts before deciding to jump on the hate bandwagon.

Unfortunately I have to go to work so I can't post more examples which I'd like to do because the one example I did use ruined my post. This is doxing and it's being justified because the victim is perceived to have done something wrong (be a hypocrite) which tells me this use of social media doxing has become normalised which is pretty scary.

She’s a woman - misogyny rules

tenbob · 12/11/2022 08:37

I’ve just googled her and got all the same information pretty easily so I don’t think this is doxxing. It’s googling…

Ive always understood Doxxing to mean uncovering the real person behind a username - so if they picked up this thread, and then published your actual name etc
Or did the same for a Twitter account with a username that wasn’t the posters real name

But this is just digging around on LinkedIn accounts and electoral rolls, not doxxing

It’s not new for them. If you are going to join a high profile campaign group that is going to HUGE lengths to achieve news coverage, and you don’t want details about you in the press, shut down your social media before you put yourself out there 🤷‍♀️

Absolutely agree world is full of misogyny, but to call this numpty being exposed for being the hypocrite that she is makes a mockery of actual misogyny!!

PAFMO · 12/11/2022 08:41

Not doxxing by the Mail.
Hypocrisy from the woman though.

Snnowflake · 12/11/2022 08:45

So none of the mail protesters used air travel/ drove big cars in the past.

It's really not. Not setting privacy controls on your social media is basic. Do you know Indigo? Have you asked if she is unhappy to have her personal information out there or are you making an assumption?
Indigo is a member of a group that taps into social media a lot. If they haven't advised them to remove posts they don't want the general public to see or lock down their accounts then that's their choice.
