dh wont discuss baby names

ottornot · 11/11/2022 14:09

baby coming next month. at the start i admittedly pestered dh into deciding on a name as i wanted baby to have more of an identity so i could feel more attached to her. decided on a name that i definitely do love but the more time has passed the more i don’t think it’s the name for her - it sounds too similar to her sisters name which i didn’t realise when agreeing it with dh (i have actually posted about this on the baby name thread before as it’s been bothering me for so long).

i’ve since tried to get dh to discuss names again as i’ve said i’ve gone off it and he just point blank won’t respond. just says ‘you pestered me into choosing a name and now i’ve chosen one you don’t like it’ etc etc. which i get. but also she’s going to have this name forever so like… imo maybe i did pester but also i can’t name her something that has literally given me sleepless nights for months.

It sounds as though you’ve got yourself very worked up about this OP & lost all sense of proportion. I think the fact that you are having sleepless nights about it is quite extreme. Not to invalidate your feelings but I can see why your DH might want to take a step back. I don’t really understand why there is such a rush to decide.

Oysterbabe · 11/11/2022 15:04

Make your own short list and discuss it again once she arrives. You don't need a name decided, that's quite odd.

FayCarew · 11/11/2022 15:06

It's something like Elodie and Ottolie, I think.
If it is Ottilie, try asking friends with a strong accent how they say it.

ottornot · 11/11/2022 15:06

there’s not a rush to decide. with my first she was named from day dot because we both loved the same name so as soon as we knew gender it wasn’t even a discussion it was just mutually agreed. i think that’s why i feel weird not having a name decided yet.

but also point is maybe i am a pain in the arse - fine. but i’m not saying there’s a rush to decide now, i’m saying i want him to reconsider the list and we can choose on the day or whatever i don’t care, but he won’t even move away from the original name which i don’t want to use anymore

This thread was what made me think of those two names.

They're not too similar, but they're not wildly different.
Would they end up being Ellie and Ottie, or Ellie and Tilly?

so i call elodie either just elodie or el. i’d call ottilie ottie i think - im worried because with my accent i’ve realised i say ottilie like ‘o-illy’ like missing out the t’s and i know i can just work on saying it properly but i feel like i sound weird 😅

i agree, i love it. i’ve just made the mistake of telling people and they’ve completely put me off. had 3 different people say it sounds similar to elodie and then my dad says it reminds him of the word ‘utterly’ and has nicknamed her utterly butterly already 🥲

I completely get this- my DH and I have different accents and there‘a some names that were ruled out because of how we hated the others pronunciation.

When I was having DD he wanted Patrick but he pronounces it like Paaaaaaaaah-trick and it twisted my tits so much I just said no, despite loving the name itself.

Elodie and Ottilie are both lovely names with a similar vibe, but the -ie ending and same number of consonants make them too samey for a sibling set.

yeah dh is from down south so his accent makes ottilie sound really nice but mine makes it sound awful. i know it’s a silly thing to worry about in a way but i don’t want to spend forever forcing myself to say my child’s name a certain way so that it sounds nice

My father would never discuss first names until we were all born (no ultrasound in those days - think antediluvian) because he said he needed to see us and get to know us first.

Lachimolala · 12/11/2022 04:55

I’m northern so both Elodie and Ottilie sound just awful in my accent, so I truly get what you mean!

hesbeingabitofadick · 12/11/2022 05:07

then my dad says it reminds him of the word ‘utterly’ and has nicknamed her utterly butterly already sorry OP, but I read your other thread, and one of your suggestions that your DH vetoed was "Clover"...🤭
Sticking to a buttery theme, how about Flora? It's nothing like DD1 and doesn't sound wrong in "northern" I'm one too

autienotnaughty · 12/11/2022 06:10

I think Ottille is beautiful, if say it in my northern accent it comes out a bit like oterly but my dd name is similar and I practiced saying it to make sure i enunciated properly Wink

RedHelenB · 12/11/2022 06:18

Stick with the nane.

44PumpLane · 12/11/2022 06:20

Ottille is a lovely name, but not if you aren't pronouncing the "t" sound.

I live in the North but don't have a northern accent and pronounce all my "t" sounds, I'm trying to drill it into my kids too.

One of my twins has a name that sounds pretty abrasive when being screeched in a northern accent which I hadn't realised before choosing it, so I'm forever trying to get the two girls to soften the sound 😂

Don't be me OP.....you've realised the potential pitfall of the name, come up with a few alternatives you'd be happy with and when she arrives try them all out.

She may very well be an Ottille through and through, but nice to have some backups.

44PumpLane · 12/11/2022 06:22

*adding that the screeching is usually my other child screeching the name of her twin across the playground.......not implying random northern folk screech her name! That reads terribly!!!!

I always worry on these thread because sometimes, and more often than you think, the sex scan is wrong.

And the mother has got so used to the expectation of A certain sex and a name etc.

FayCarew · 12/11/2022 09:27

I hear it as Oh-uh-leh, and I don't like it

TuisealGinideach · 12/11/2022 09:30

What’s the rush? We didn’t decide finally until we were on our way to register eight-week-old DS.

Aha - well, no - you cannot call them Elodie and Ottilie really, it’s a bit much. I’d suggest Meredith.

Just keep your shortlist and wait till she’s born. He’ll engage then.

He’s right about Clover..

hahah i looove clover. meredith or alba were my initial picks and he liked both at the start but then ottilie seems to overrule them both for him 🥲 i just can’t get oh-ih-lee pronunciation out of my head

also love vada like from my girl but he vetoed that too 😂
