To think it’s unkind to hoot at someone stuck on a box junction?

I am an utter cretin, I know, and never should have entered the box junction without being certain I could clear it, as per the Highway Code. I’ve done the theory test and know this full well. Quite how I ended up in that situation I’m not exactly sure. I’ve had a lot on my mind lately (waiting for biopsy results in particular, plus my father had surgery yesterday) but that’s no excuse. I genuinely thought I could clear it but was mistaken and ended up stuck in front of a red light.

People, understandably, were absolutely furious. But by the time it had happened, there wasn’t realistically anything I could do. Driving through the red light would not only have been illegal but could have caused an accident.

I really wish people would have some compassion and realise it was a genuine mistake made by someone under stress. We all slip up from time to time. None of us are perfect.

Yet maybe some of those I inconvenienced were on their way to hospital appointments or to be at the bedside of dying loved ones. Go on, flame me even more and make feel bad! I feel like I deserve it today. I’m a total arse, aren’t I?

Some drivers will hoot and be arseholes for pretty much any reason.
I have a box junction on my way home from work daily. I often wait carefully on the edge to be sure I can clear it... and I get hooted at for that too. You can't win because you're on their bit of road and they resent you for it.
Assuming you're not still stuck in the box junction put them out of your mind now.

AsIfByMagic123 · 11/11/2022 14:30

Sorry about your mum @Ekátn

So many perfect drivers on this thread who have never become distracted or ever, ever made a mistake while on the roads. 😂😂😂

It was probably more dangerous to stay in the box junction than cross the red light. I'm guessing you we're at the lights for a pedestrian crossing if you had already made the turn so could have crawled across it slowly checking for pedestrian

Hahaha you go try that at the Euston Road box junction, lemme know how you get on

Actually this is true. The consequences would be a large fine and points for going through a red light. It would be less selfish to accept those than delay other people unnecessarily. Surely even a court would be OK with that.

It isn't more dangerous to stay in a box junction than cross a red light. Especially with pedestrians about 😮. If somebody's so annoyed with the wait they crash into you it's completely their fault!

Choconut · 11/11/2022 14:50

But how were the other drivers supposed to know that it was a genuine mistake made by someone under stress and not just you being an ass? I'm sure most people have done something similar and been beeped before, you just blocked a few people for a couple of minutes, I wouldn't give it another thought.

Grumpybutfunny · 11/11/2022 14:53

@Feysriana their life outside of London you know! Pedestrians up north have the common sense to check the junctions clear before they cross anyway.

@AsIfByMagic123 that's only if you get caught 😉 to be fair round here if it had a camera it covers the whole box junction so you would get a red light fine anyway for being in the box not on green. If not the cops would either be nice and wave you through out the way or give you a ticket for causing an obstruction/dangerous driving being in the box so it would be one fine or another

mathanxiety · 11/11/2022 14:54

People get annoyed at poor driving, and that's reasonable.

Fattoushi · 11/11/2022 14:55

  1. How can anyone realise what is going on in your head? They can't
  2. It's usually not that. It's usually someone who can't drive properly, or who doesn't care.
Battlecat98 · 11/11/2022 15:02

Don't worry, it is what it is you didn't cause an accident, move on, you definitely won't do it again.

I agree with your point I don't see the point in beeping at people who have made a mistake, it's childish and often makes people feel better about themselves.

gonutkin · 11/11/2022 15:06

Haven't read the whole thread but wanted to say that everyone makes mistakes and I think people who beep at others on the road for doing so mind boggles me. What do people think a beep will achieve? Some old twat beeped at me the other day as I took too long pulling out of a road.. it was a two way lane that was narrow so had to wait for both lanes to be free to swing my car around the bend. I thought to myself, has that made you feel better? What do people get out of it I have no idea

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/11/2022 15:13

What do the 'you're an idiot and yes I'd beep at you' think this will achieve?

No one sat there in the box in the middle of the junction thinks 'yes, this was fun ill do this again!'

Either you've made a horrible mistake and are stressed or, you've made a horrible mistake but don't give a crap.

So beeping will potentially achieve nothing for the 'don't give a crap' people, or stress an already stressed out driver further into making an even bigger mistake (perhaps going through a red light and hitting something).

Perhaps the aggressive beepers need to be reminded - that is NOT what your car horn is for!

"Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence. Never sound your horn aggressively."

Littlewhitecat · 11/11/2022 15:20

You may find beeping drivers are the least of your worries OP. If your local authority has a camera on that junction you could find yourself in receipt of a big fat fine.

SkylightSkylight · 11/11/2022 15:21

transverseworries · 11/11/2022 13:31

Honestly, I'd have beeped you too. You're making excuses with your biospy and father's surgery and they're not acceptable. If you're so distracted you're not aware of your surroundings then you shouldn't be driving

And if you do get stuck in a box junction you need to do your best to try and get out of it, either by getting through during the light change (there will be a pause between your light going red and the next green light), changing your direction to take a safe route or reversing back to where you should have been in the first place. It's not ok to just block a junction for everyone else and in some places can cause huge issues.

I'd seriously think about whether you should be driving at the moment if your life is so full of distractions that you're not safe on the roads

Oh jog on

im sure you've never made a mistake in your life. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

@AsIfByMagic123

I hope your biopsy results are ok & your Dad make a good record from his surgery.

we ALL make mistakes (yes ALL)

I bet someone didn't move up like they should have, thus leaving you less room than you expected.

Try to relax as best you can and put it all behind you. No one was hurt!!

They shouldn't have been beeping at you anyway.

Fairislefandango · 11/11/2022 15:26

Yes it's a bit of a silly and annoying thing to do, but you're only human anc it was an error! Hooting in that situation is a totally twatty thing for a person to do. It is deliberate rather than an error, and it gains them nothing except venting their road rage. They should re-read their highway code too, and remind themselves of what the horn is actually for! It is not for expressing annoyance.

FleecyBlanketPerson · 11/11/2022 15:33

Cut yourself some slack. Lesson learned for next time. Where I live you get beeped at all the time. For not setting off soon enough,

FleecyBlanketPerson · 11/11/2022 15:35

Pressed post by accident. They are lots of aggressive drivers where I live. We all have bad days when it comes to driving though x

LadyApplejack · 11/11/2022 16:05

I do understand the frustration if they're big multi-way lights where if the green is blocked and you miss, you're stuck waiting another couple of mins. I tend to assume it's someone barging through in order to make the lights rather an honest mistake (I don't beep though I want to!).

But - fuck it, you're not the first and you won't be the last person to make a mistake while driving! The horner will forget it more quickly than you! If it happens again I'd try to move safely out of the way rather than hold things up. Forget it now, and good luck with your personal stuff.

pilates · 11/11/2022 16:14

You did wrong. Move on. Have a good weekend.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/11/2022 16:16

I agree it’s unnecessary and unhelpful to hoot in these circumstances. It’s really not a big thing to be hooted at though.

You need to keep driving to get your confidence up!

SylvanianFrenemies · 11/11/2022 16:18

This all seems a bit dramatic.
You made a mistake- you are human.
Other drivers hooted at you out of irritation - they too are human.

No need to make anything more of it.

Samcro · 11/11/2022 16:20

AsIfByMagic123 · 11/11/2022 13:43

You’re right, these are poor excuses. I won’t be driving until further notice.

we have all done it. I still remember years later how horrid it was. never done it since. bet you won't either. carry on driving.

OwwwMuuuum · 11/11/2022 16:27

Try living in London, when I lived there ever box junction is camera’s and stopping (not even on a red light, just halting at any point) was a £65 fine. That gets you out of the habit of chancing it pretty quick. Now I just don’t enter until I can see one car space ahead. You’re being precious about your personal worries. Of course you probably don’t need telling that people can’t be expected not to hoot in case the person they are hooting at is feeling emotionally vulnerable that day. Next time give them the finger, at least you’ll feel better haha

Completely agree. It achieves nothing apart from stressing everyone else out.
