High grade pre cancerous cells, I'm petrified. Please talk to me

I've just had a call regarding my most recent smear, I have to go to have a biopsy etc next Thursday. High grade dyskaryosis.

I'm shaking. I have three small children, one is disabled and one just a baby.

Please, can you offer me some words of reassurance from personal experience or even anecdotally.

I have terrible health anxiety and this is my worst nightmare. I can't stop crying.

Posting here shamelessly for traffic.

Good luck love, we're all here for you, holding your hand.

Want2beme · 14/11/2022 10:42

Hand hold. Thinking of you today.

spiderlight · 14/11/2022 12:32

Hope it goes smoothly today and helps to put your mind at rest. Holding your hand from afar.

First ever Smear at aged 25 I had 90 percent pre cancerous cells. cin 3. Lasered away.

For anyone reading. They ONLY now test your cells if you are hpv positive. So your cells could change anyway but you'll only know if you're HPV.

it goes away on its own often.

All my smears have since been normal.

I'm 28 and I've only ever had two smears, one in 2019 which was clear and now this one.

My partner had an affair in late 2019, so I've clearly got fucking HPV from that 😭

You could have dodgy cells for years. They only check it when it's HPV positive.

sosickoffeelingsick · 14/11/2022 13:00

I had cin3 15 years back - had a biopsy (which was painless, though I was a little shaky afterwards) and then smears annually for 5 years - no recurrence since. Have had children with no issues. This is what smears are for - please try not to worry, it is entirely treatable.

Good luck @Midnightsbecomemyafternoons

My period started as soon as I got to the hospital (almost a week early!) so they couldn't do it. I have to go away and wait until they get in touch with me to rebook. Gutted.

So the hospital called today and they've booked me back in for next Monday. They seem really efficient and on the ball which is great as I worried I might get lost in the system after yesterday. Had a bit of a wobble today so came back to read all of your comments which helped ground me a bit :)

At least that's not too long a wait.

The thought of it all is often worse than the actual process.

Midnightsbecomemyafternoons · 15/11/2022 20:08

It seems that way based on all the encouraging replies.

I noticed a swollen lymph node underneath my ear when I was in the shower this morning so you can gather where my anxiety took me, even though its probably completely unrelated.

Cells on the cervix wouldn't cause that under my ear would it?

Roll on next week.

Want2beme · 16/11/2022 00:16

Glad you dont have to wait too long.

spiderlight · 16/11/2022 09:57

Bad luck about the period but I'm glad you don't have too long to wait. The lymph node is vanishingly unlikely to be related. It'll be fighting off a cold.

Midnightsbecomemyafternoons · 16/11/2022 21:25

Thank you 🤞😬

I had moderate CIN2 cells removed in 2009. All has been ok ever since. Go to your appointments and have whatever treatment you need. Try not to worry too much, they’ve been found and can be treated. Xx

Midnightsbecomemyafternoons · 18/11/2022 16:27

Thank you Wotsits, I'm glad it went well for you.

I've quit smoking now, it was something I could never muster the motivation to do until now so I'm really pleased about it and feels like I'm doing something to help myself which eases the anxiety a bit.

I've also bought some AHCC supplements which are supposed to help the body to clear the HPV. I've got a few months supply so we'll see if there's anything in it.

I'm wondering if the fact i don't want any more children will make any difference to the treatment I have 🤔

They can take as much of my cervix as possible afaic, suits me fine.

My DD had this 20 years ago. Had the cells removed and has gone on to have two DC and no further problems.

I'm glad everything was OK for your DD, thank you 🙂

I had lletz treatment in my early 20s due to HPV, I had stage 3 pre cancerous cells. I'm late 30s now and have been fine since. I know it's nerve wracking, but the treatment works and hopefully will sort it for you

CloseYourMouthLynn · 19/11/2022 20:51

And I had two children after. They only take what they need to

Midnightsbecomemyafternoons · 19/11/2022 21:56

I didn't expect to hear that it was so common, I'm really surprised (and reassured for the most part)

My GP has kindly prescribed me 2 diazepam tablets. I'm to 'try' one out tomorrow to see how I get on with it first before taking one Monday, apparently it could 'knock me out' 😂

I had high grade for 2 types of cells, one deep tissue one surface tissue. So could have gotten 2 types of cancers.. this was some years ago so don’t remember the exact names.

got a lletz procedure fairly fast after his, got them removed and went for yearly checks after (when I discovered the issue it was after 7 years of not going, I went religiously from my 20s to my 30s, then thought why bother, it’s always been good…)

anyway had a child after it and now pregnant with the second. My tests have been clear since.

My mum had the same procedure than when she was my age, more or less, she has a primary dousing who got cervical cancer, but survived, still living, 20 years later, and I also have a 2nd cousin (from the branch of family) who was recently diagnosed with cervical cancer (she’s very young, 30). So it runs in my family.

It’s good you discovered it in time, don’t worry, get them removed, then have yearly checks. I know W who had to have abnormal cells removed even more than once, but they never developed cancer.

CristinaNov182 · 19/11/2022 22:40

Midnightsbecomemyafternoons · 11/11/2022 18:01

Is it really common for somebody to have a high grade dyskaryosis result after a clear smear then? I can see that abnormal smears are super common, I'm just surprised that it can leap from 'clear' to 'high grade dyskaryosis" in just three years.

That's a very fast progression for something that is thought to be slow growing isn't it?

3 years is a long time, so yes totally possible. Plus these are just abnormal cells. Cervical cancer is one of the cancers that takes years to develop.

for contrast, a friend developed cancer on an organ and she had to have an op urgently, it was a fast spreading one and if she had discovered it months later, her organ might have been lost. Months, never mind years for pre-cancer.

Midnightsbecomemyafternoons · 20/11/2022 19:44

I wasn't aware you could have two different variants of abnormal cells wow. I'm glad you had it all sorted and are OK now. Female cancers don't run in my family and I can't think of one female relative who's had anything like this. There is bowel cancer on my paternal grandparents side though.

Did anybody here have any post-orgasm spotting when they had dyskaryosis? We haven't DTD since I got the news about the cells as I've been too anxious about it but after manual stimulation I have the tiniest amount of spotting, fresh red blood. I'm a bit worried now 😕
