To think dentists have become unaffordable?

I went for a teeth cleaning today, £98! The hygienist recommended I get it done very frequently, four times a year, and made me feel bad for not doing this already.

Who can afford dentists in these dire financial times?!

I agree with you, it's expensive. Plus, it's really hard to find an NHS dentist if you move or your current practise goes private. But, with the way dentistry is going in this country I do think we need to prioritise and budget for it going forward. People think nothing of spending a lot of money on their hair, nails, brows, lips, botox etc, quite regularly. I do think we need to put looking after our teeth on our budgets and prioritise it. However, I do think everyone should have access to dentistry and those who need access to more affordable or free dentistry should be given it. It's horrific that people are resorting to pulling their own teeth out etc.

good point! I wonder how many of those who baulk at paying for dental treatment het their nails done every few weeks.

My hygienist is ‘only’ £65 and I wouldn’t be happy paying more than that. We’re in the North West.

I have family members who are dentists. They are millionaires and drive Ferraris (plural). NHS doesn’t pay enough that’s true, but they are certainly making a lot of money from private patients

Why are you paying £65 then? Get your family members to do it. That is of course if they exist, along with their Ferraris (plural).

Exactly this. I know a few dentists and they are comfortable but certainly not owning-multiple-Ferraris comfortable. I suspect only a handful are making 7 figures and that will be in the capacity of business owners of multiple surgeries rather than just bog standard dentists.

I know a few dentists, most are ok financially but not Ferrari level.
I do know 2 mega rich dentists but there is family money there and they have a couple of other non dental related businesses too.

If you go every six months the going rate is around £65 for hygenist.
They charge more if your teeth are in a state.
Its cheaper than extraction followed by dentures or implants.

This isn't the case . The standard treatment at my dentist is 98 or 130

They also told me that if I don't go for regular check-ups once every 6 months I will be taken off the patient list....

Some dentists are just rip-off merchants (at least Dick Turpin had a mask !)

My NHS dentist retired and I went to new private one.

Nothing hurt, I just wanted a checkup.

The treatment plan told me I needed £500 (!) of work. This included replacing all my fillings and periodental (?) treatment (whatever that is). X rays were extra.

When I queried the cost I was told that "maybe I wasn't the sort of patient they wanted". I said that they were probably correct and walked out. 😡

I haven't been able to afford them for years.
