Central heating is too hot, AIBU to look for a new job?

The office is really hot. I’m going to work in sleeveless tops. I’m going home with headaches etc. myself and other colleagues do as well. We are using fans to try and cool down, management say it’s an acceptable temperature (they also don’t work in the office). They have said in so many words it’s just me.

AIBU to look for a new job? Been at the company three years, seen a job with more responsibility but I’m scared.

for reference the office is reading between 23-26 degrees. Depends on the thermometer location in the office, also different thermometers. I’m feeling I’ll during and after work. Why am I so sensitive to the heat? Im summer I don’t tend to feel too hot

19 degrees is the right temperature really for an office environment- i would refuse to work in that office and say you will WFH until it is sorted.

Wafflesnsniffles · 11/11/2022 23:36

SillieSarah I would present them with facts on a loop until they listen. Its really not ok - for the environment or peoples health. Utterly ridiculous to heat it up so much and then cool it down again. Total waste of money and the earths resources.
Maybe find another job and then continuously bash them with facts!

Wafflesnsniffles · 11/11/2022 23:37

18c is perfectly fine - a cardigan/jumper etc will totally do the trick if necessary. Id be in a t shirt at 21c.

DoctorAcula · 11/11/2022 23:40

This sounds like one of our tenants, they have the heating blasting and the air con on, ridiculous waste that we as the management agent are trying to control to bring the service charge down.

SillieSarah · 12/11/2022 01:41

energy crisis - Our customers can’t pay their bills and I’m being told it’s fine to work in an office whereby we have to open windows

Based on what?

i would agree 21 all year around, any less would be too cold.

This sounds like my ideal place to work! I get cold very easily. If I'm sat stationary at my desk at home I start to get very cold at 20C and need to put layers on. At 18C my fingers start to get very very cold and I find it hard to type and my nose starts to run. I have been checked out many times throughout my life by Dr's but never find an explanation. I'm just always cold. I have to keep my room at 23C-ish to be comfortable.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/11/2022 02:28

Try working on my ward! It's usually 30 degrees.

Ok but the temperature is more than 23 degrees….. so perhaps it’s still too warm even for you?

I assume there's no windows to open.

Anyway you can turn the heating down yourself ?

Do you not think she would have done that if she could?

Apparently the heating is set at 17 but coming out at 25 lol. It’s a joke….

Whatever way to fix it in the interim make sure you have something for sugar, maybe a drink, some crackers and water to keep you going. Sounds tough op

Jewel1968 · 12/11/2022 15:34

Could you ask for a referral to OH. You are having health issues because of the heat. Could you be menopausal or peri. Doesn't really matter if it's triggering migraines.

SillieSarah · 12/11/2022 18:23

I’m only too hot at the office, only in winter and only when I’m there…. So no health concerns

Not unreasonable at all to look for a new job and explain the reasons in your exit interview if you have one

I’ve sat next to a window and apart from the sun than heating me, not being able to see from the sun (I’m a little sensitive to the sun and do wear sunnies a lot of the time), it didn’t provide relief on the second day.

Urgh what a vile temperature to be working in. Confused I could not do it. Who decides on/controls the temperature? Why do the wishes of that one person trump the rest of you who are clearly all blisteringly hot? Do you have a head office you could complain to?

It's like the post office in my little market town... 83-85% of the year the heating is on. Literally just July and August it's off. The rest of the year it's on, and set on 25-27C. I would fucking die!

It’s one temp for the whole building.
we currently have the system set at 17…. And it’s heating to 23-26 degrees. makes you wonder about the system putting out toxic fumes :/

@SillieSarah sorry I didn't express myself well. What I mean is ask for an OH referral because you are suffering from migraines which are work related. It might help put a bit of pressure on employer.

I’m not suffering from migraines I wouldn’t say. I feel too hot in the office and as a result get headaches etc. my face just feels too hot, like I’m in a pressure cooker of heat….. I believe migraines are different? If the temp was a couple of degrees lower my symptoms wouldn’t exist.

i think I’m just going to go in and see what the temp is like, if it’s still too warm for me, I’ll work from home perm. I’ve got a doctors appointment as well next month.

another staff member has also said they are too hot at work and asked to flex work at home. I’m not the only one suffering…. But ultimately I’m the one making the biggest fuss

I’m not validating myself atm because other people don’t feel as hot as me, therefore I’m second guessing why I’m having such an emotional reaction :(

Are you expected to dress formally in the office? Start wearing strappy summer dresses, shorts and sandals so that you are more comfortable in the heat. Take ice packs, cool drinks, sweatbands and sports towels to keep yourself cool. If they won’t adjust the temperature you will need to change what you wear or only work from home.
