AIBU To Be Disappointed With The Crown (Season 5)

I've enjoyed all the episodes of The Crown so far and was really looking forward to the start of Season 5.
We started watching it last night and we were terribly disappointed.
Imelda Staunton is wonderful as the Queen but she seems to have a very small role in the proceedings so far.
AIBU to wish they'd left it at the end of Season 4? Or is there a reason why Season 5 is just a bit "meh"?

Episode 2 here and I'm struggling. I feel like it's been rushed.

Beldam · 10/11/2022 19:10

I loved, loved, loved the earlier series but this meh… I only half watched episode 1 and I don’t think I will bother with the rest.

AnyFucker · 10/11/2022 19:21

I cannot understand people not rating Olivia Colman as the Queen. She was brilliant.

Wasn't it delayed a year due to the pandemic?

Backtoblack1 · 10/11/2022 20:36

Finished it today. Frustrated with the casting choices. Definitely not up to par with previous seasons. I just loved HBC as Margot - the bitterness was brilliantly portrayed.

PurpleFlower1983 · 10/11/2022 20:45

I like it but it gets worse with each actress - Claire Foy was superb and it’s been downhill since then!

Backtoblack1 · 10/11/2022 20:46

The cast in the first two seasons were outstanding.

Pinpot · 10/11/2022 20:48

I absolutely love it.

I think it does take a bit of adjusting when the new actors take over but I just suspend reality a bit and enjoy it.

It's the best tv ever made inmho

EarringsandLipstick · 10/11/2022 22:01

she didn't CONSTANTLY do that doe-eyed thing, and her voice wasn't always whispery and weak.)

Agree 💯

Isithotinhere · 10/11/2022 22:14

Very disappointing, poor casting and story too well known, no insights, just a reminder that they all behaved appallingly.

LoveAngelLove · 10/11/2022 22:17

Do you think we are disappointed with this season because we have all lived through it and remember it well? Nothing is an education?

Dartmoorcheffy · 10/11/2022 22:20

On episode 5 now and it's a lot better than the first 4.

Yes I think so. It was more a period drama before, not it’s fairly recent living memory.

TheShellBeach · 11/11/2022 10:00

Well, we're now watching Episode 8 and DH said "I'm sure it'll get better - we just need to keep on watching........" and I pointed out that there were only another two episodes to go.

That's the trouble with streaming. And having a DH who doesn't really understand what streaming is. He keeps asking me what time the next episode will be on.

I'm finding the portrayal of princess Diana very trying. She didn't spend her whole life with her head at an awkward angle peering up through her eyelashes ffs. I also highly doubt that every time she met someone new she started making digs about her life and the royal family from the first sentence. Bloody ridiculous. Nor was she painfully thin. I am not saying that there is anything wrong with the shape of the actress at all, but does anyone else notice the lingering shots of her slender arms and wrists?

This bothers me too. Knowing as we do that there is a heavy dose of fiction included in the series.

tactum · 11/11/2022 10:29

I don't like it.
The first 3 series did a brilliant job of telling the overall story but with each episode focusing on a specific different event - moon landing, Aberfan, ira etc.

As soon as Diana becomes involved its just a dreary soap opera that limps along

ASimpleLampoon · 11/11/2022 14:27

Im a Diana fan so I'm loving it. Debicki has got it right I think.

Agree that DW is odd as Charles. Not a great casting choice.

I'm disturbed that I'm finding John Major rather hot as I can't unsee that it's Jonny Lee Miller

SleeplessInEngland · 11/11/2022 14:29

Haven't watched any of it yet but Dominic West as Charles already seems miscast. Charles is many things but a magnetic, dashing rogue isn't one of them.

Allschoolsareartschools · 11/11/2022 23:20

Johnny Lee Miller is great playing John Major & I like the portrayal of Diana. I'm not convinced by Charles as I thought Josh O' Connor was perfect in S4. Imelda Staunton is growing on me as the Queen. Ann & Margaret nowhere near as convincing as S4.
Really didn't enjoy episode 3, all about Mohammed Al Fayed & forwarded most of it which I've never done before. It seems a bit hit & miss so far.

Allschoolsareartschools · 11/11/2022 23:22

And the Queen Mother is nothing like her at all!

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 11/11/2022 23:24

I’m not sure I’ll bother. I wish they’d left in in the days of the glorious and perfect Claire Foy and Matt Smith.

Also it seems so much of the content of s5 has been officially confirmed as BS

AnyFucker · 10/11/2022 19:21

Agreed! She was extraordinary. I felt that a lot of people’s criticism of her performance just reflected the switch away from Claire Fay’s pretty steeliness and nicer frocks.

EVHead · 11/11/2022 23:27

The Gunpowder Plot lesson at Eton was very cringey - obviously included for the non-UK audience. Having William looking awkward all the way through was just silly.
