On our way to a&e with a poorly 3 year old! He's had a temp on and off for 4 days paired with a cold but the last 24 hours he's been lethargic, in out of sleep and not eating or drinking.

I feel sick there is no worse feeling!

Any ideas what it could be? (Im on our way to hospital so I will be getting actual medical advice soon)

Thank you

Bless you OP, it’s horrible when they’re ill. You’re doing the best thing for him though.

Advance warning that anyone suggesting 111 / GP / pharmacy in criticising OP for going to hospital can slot off, now is not the time!

Anunusualfamily · 09/11/2022 20:49

No sedation but will have magic anaesthetic cream if he needs a cannula. Sounds terrible but we like babies that fight and need “pinning down” we don’t like bubs who just let us do stuff.
can’t stress enough about pushing the juice is there a shop would he like an icelolly?
be really positive “what a cool glowly red light on your finger” “wow a sticker on your hands and arms that’s so cool” let’s find a toy book cartoon distraction is key

Not sure why you need to go to A&E. Is his breathing laboured? Is he using his stomach muscles to breathe? I’d keep him home and call 111.
syringing water or juice into the mouth works quite well.

Sorry didn’t see your update. I hope he gets better soon. My son had pneumonia at 19 months. He went from very unwell to charging around the ward really quickly.

Vallmo47 · 09/11/2022 20:54

I cannot believe advice on here saying A&E not necessary.

OP, I am glad you are now in good hands and I hope your little man will bounce back very soon. My daughter had pneumonia a couple years ago and I have never seen her more ill in my life. She bounced back real quick when they finally diagnosed her correctly (long story) but it was very unsettling. Once they’ve given fluid and medication to treat him, you will be amazed how quickly he perks up!

It’s scary and horrible to see them unwell but they bounce back very quick. Try and not get upset as he’ll be able to pick up on your worry.
Also mummy have a sip daddy has a sip Freddy has a sip can work. Squirt a tiny bit of water at each other (don’t flood the place!!) get him to use the syringe to get the liquid and squirt it himself. being in hospital isn’t a nice situation but everything is always less scary with some fun

JustWork · 09/11/2022 20:59

Oh no. Poor little thing and how stressful for you. I think you are doing the right thing taking him to a n e especially if he's not had enough wet nappies and seems lethargic. It's probably nothing serious but it's always better to get it looked at.

My Ds had something similar a few weeks back. A very high temperature for about ten days that only ever came down with nurofen. Stopped eating and slept lots. He didn't have much milk but did have water. I took him to a n e on day 5 and on day 6, when he seemed significantly worse because we were so worried. They thought it was RSV. Apparently they are seeing a lot of cases of RSV making kids very poorly and lasting got longer than it used to.

Good luck op. Hope he'll be ok soon!!

ivfbabymomma1 · 09/11/2022 21:44

Thank you all so much! He had a shot of glucose for his bloody sugar and then as we were on the way to the ward we passed a WH Smith's which was closing but the shutters were half way down and my son pointed at the ice cream freezer! In desperation I popped my head under and asked if I could please buy one and she said she has cashed up but she will just give him one, she went to the freezer and got two and honestly I cried I was so gratful!

So he's had 2 lolly's! First thing he's eaten since yesterday and now we are chilling on the ward waiting for the doctor to do the rounds! He's had a test for respiratory infections so I'll await those results,

I haven't mentioned sepsis so I will do! Hopefully after those 2 ice creams he will have a wee soon!!! He's still refusing water though!!

Thank you all for listening and for your nice comments!!! We've been told to expect to be here for 4-6 hours xx

@Anunusualfamily ha ha that's his actual name as well!!

Anunusualfamily · 09/11/2022 21:51

Yay glad he’s perked up sugar can be a wonderful thing. When your ill whatever you fancy does you good (generally)

Anunusualfamily · 09/11/2022 21:57

Haha what a guess 😂
would he prefer juice/squash? There’s usually jelly and always yogurts and toast on the ward too.

ivfbabymomma1 · 09/11/2022 21:59

@Anunusualfamily nothing at the moment sadly! I'm sure he would have another ice lolly but there isn't any. They brought him some ice cream and he declined! I want him to wee but there's not enough fluid going in I guess :(

OP posts:
Anunusualfamily · 09/11/2022 22:15

It’ll come soon. don’t worry. By the time you see the doc and he’s woken up and chattering away you’ll be saying he wasn’t like this earlier!

I’d try not to give no as an option for things he needs to have. his routine and life has just been shifted so saying no is the only control he has in this environment. Something like mummy’s got this icecream do you think it’s strawberry flavour i think it’s yummier than your icelolly what do you think?
try cheersing your cups and drinking your drinks together.

notmyrealmoniker · 09/11/2022 22:48

I think they will put up some IV fluids, might start some antibiotics if they suspect bacterial chest infection, keep on with the paracetamol and ibuprofen. The iv won't be nice and I suspect an overnight stay if he doesn't wee.

Doorpalms · 09/11/2022 22:53

I never understand why the first instinct of people when their child is ill is to post a running commentary on mumsnet.

he doesn’t sound that ill if he’s asking for and eating ice cream

You first started posting when you were on your way though. And if he’s been ill for four days a gp or 111 would have been better for answers than a&e surely?

ivfbabymomma1 · 09/11/2022 23:05

@Doorpalms if you read my thread then you will see I'm here on the advice of 111

I'm really stressed, I asked for a handhold, you don't want to give it that's fine but as a worried mother please leave me alone

runlittlemonster · 09/11/2022 23:10

Last time my 3 year old had a bug he slept for a solid 24 hours. It was great, I got loads of work done 😂

Lndnmummy · 09/11/2022 23:18

Wishing the little one all the best OP, it is so so frightening when they become unwell. We are here for a handhold and sending best wishes. If they get some fluids down him and his temperature under control he'll hopefully feel
more like himself tmrw. ❤️

PinkButtercups · 09/11/2022 23:43

@Doorpalms oh have a day off!
Every time someone posts abojt their child going to A&E you always get someone who acts like children shouldn't go or take up a space. Leave the OP alone fgs.

Glad he is feeling a bit better and hopefully will have enough fluids for a wee soon!

PinkButtercups · 09/11/2022 23:44

ladydimitrescu · 09/11/2022 23:48

No one should be advising someone with a poorly child not to go to hospital - completely irresponsible behaviour. You don't mess around with a 3 year old who's going downhill fast.

Hope he's on the mend op, sending love x

Flubber88 · 09/11/2022 23:49

Aww bless the WHSmith Ice Cream fairy - what a lovely thing I hope he is on the mend soon - wishing him a speedy recovery he is in good hands xx

Designerenvy · 09/11/2022 23:53

Glad he had the ice pops! That’s a good sign and will keep the sugar levels up. There’s a lot of viruses around at the moment and kids seem to be getting quite unwell with them.
Fingers crossed he’ll sleep well and the fluids will help him.
Not sure why people get so annoyed about parents bringing their kids to A&E. He’s being admitted to a ward so you obviously made the right call op.
