Should I tell the police?

This is more of what would you do..
So my dad is in construction and he started a job today where he has to replace a floor in a garage.
Whilst ripping up the floor he found a semi hidden door behind a big mirror that was hanging up on a wall at the very back of the garage.
The door was half the normal size and when he looked in he saw that it was a small space with no windows but a mattress a tv and a book. It also had a vent leading out of it and the tube was across the garage roof.. we think for air (does that makes sense?)
So what do you think the room could be for?
Client is a man maybe in his 70s. Lives alone.
Should we report this to the police or are we letting our imagination run away?

@girlmom21 Might not be anybody there now but DNA evidence could find links to historic crimes.

jaffacakeany1 · 09/11/2022 12:13

I'd be interested to know how old the book is? It is very intriguing.

frenchnoodle · 09/11/2022 12:17

Depends on the context of where you actually are, for example if in Jersey or Guernsey it's most likely a hideaway used by reconnaissance soldier during the Nazi occupation.

CopOut27 · 09/11/2022 12:17

I agree this sounds very odd but honestly what is it you are reporting? Man has a tiny room off his garage with some things in it. Plus what are you expecting the police to do - go round there and interview him? Presumably they’d need a special doc to enter his home but there is no evidence of anything to justify that…?

Sheitgeist · 09/11/2022 12:20

The police are there to enforce the law, maintain order, investigate crimes and apprehend potential criminals.

They are not there to investigate the "odd"

If there's nothing to suggest a crime has been committed then there's nothing to report.

I actually have a semi hidden room under my garage. It's not visible from the front as my property is set on a hill, but there's an underneath floor, with door and windows at the back, and a partially obscured door inside there with a small room behind. We used to use it for storage but found it too damp. I guess I should be aware now that any tradespersons who come across this room may report me to the police 🙄

".

Chesterdrawsseriously · 09/11/2022 12:21

Well it was only half hidden. Which I suspect means half obscured by a mirror they just hahappened to to be standing there, and it was clearly accessible for your dad, so I’d assume panic room or bomb shelter. I’d hazard a guess that master criminals who kidnap people and hide them in little rooms actually try to cover the door to the room at least when they know someone like your dad will be there.

TonTonMacoute · 09/11/2022 12:26

What is the 'crime' you are reporting exactly?

In any case if you are expecting the police to do anything about anything these days you are whistling in the wind. DH was assaulted, managed to film it on his phone plus had a neighbour witness the assault, and the police did nothing as they 'didn't have enough evidence'.

KimberleyClark · 09/11/2022 11:25

More than likely the room was just being used as a den by a teen.

A voice of reason amongst all the crazy hysterical responses.

Probably a WW2 air raid shelter, since used as a den by a child.

Well, does it have a mattress, tv, book and air pipe in it? That's the bit that's weird, not the actual room itself.

If the room contained a couple of tools, an old rusty tricycle and a mouse trap OP wouldn't have batted an eyelid.

You can tell them - might link in with other intelligence about the house or the home owner. Might be the final piece of the jigsaw to something big.

If it turns out to be nothing - then no harm done

This

Angip3 · 09/11/2022 12:29

ok why is no one mentioning that the GARAGE FLOOR is being replaced??? whats he got buried under there!!

QuestioningMyExistence · 09/11/2022 12:13

Without a lock on the door?

Op see if you can find a floor plan of the house. See if it was built like that.

mauvish · 09/11/2022 12:30

There's no way that the OPs DH should be assessing for urine stains, restraint marks etc. Some people have seen too much CSI on TV!

IF and it's a big IF this little room has been used for anything untoward, then he shouldn't even go in it. He shouldn't be doing anything that might disturb any evidence, were the police going to be interested.

Newmum1998 · 09/11/2022 12:33

Just report it to police non emergency number
No harm will be done if it turns out to be nothing
But it might be the final piece of the jigsaw to something big
Better safe than sorry I say
Definitely don’t ask the owner what it’s for either because as poster above suggested he might destroy any incriminating evidence

ParanoidGynodroid · 09/11/2022 12:33

Bonkers thread.
What the heck does anyone think the police will do?
There's no sign of a crime to report.

dcontour · 09/11/2022 12:34

It's probably a room used as an air-raid shelter in the second world war.
Maybe the man uses it as a den to hang out in - perhaps he feels safe there.
Maybe he used to use it as a man cave and no longer does. Perhaps a family member used to use it.
I don't think you should report it to the police. Ask DH's boss what he thinks. Maybe one of you could ask the man about it.

2bazookas · 09/11/2022 12:34

I'd tell the police.

THIS! Definitely bodies in there, OP call the police at once!

Sheitgeist · 09/11/2022 12:35

Sorry that was meant to be an emboldened quote.

Ffs. If he's clever enough to get away with whatever he's done, he's hardly going to leave things so blatant that a work man could see it

Police also gather intelligence.

Trinity65 · 09/11/2022 12:36

Could it be an old shelter from during the War?

Maybe a little House Owner used to like to play in there etc and just left it for prosperity
Other options are somewhat creepy

You’re right!

Honestly I would report this - even if it turned out to be nothing, it’s better than not saying anything and it turning out to be something sinister.
