Should I tell the police?

This is more of what would you do..
So my dad is in construction and he started a job today where he has to replace a floor in a garage.
Whilst ripping up the floor he found a semi hidden door behind a big mirror that was hanging up on a wall at the very back of the garage.
The door was half the normal size and when he looked in he saw that it was a small space with no windows but a mattress a tv and a book. It also had a vent leading out of it and the tube was across the garage roof.. we think for air (does that makes sense?)
So what do you think the room could be for?
Client is a man maybe in his 70s. Lives alone.
Should we report this to the police or are we letting our imagination run away?

Please don't put a picture that is a horrible invasion of privacy

Why have you still not reported to police OP?

"Hello police, I want to a report a crawl space with an old TV and a book of magic please."

OneTC · 10/11/2022 11:28

Imagine if you got a tradie in and he's taking pictures of your stuff and sending it to his family members.

whumpthereitis · 10/11/2022 11:32

“Hello police, I’d like to report a house that’s got a room”

secret rooms in older British houses aren’t uncommon. My house has one, we put a safe in it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Why have you still not reported to police OP?

Because my dad is still working there and doesn't want to report until he finishes.

What does the old boy look like? Is it possible that he’s Lord Lucan and the hidey hole is exactly that in case the old bill knock his door? 😂

Sennelier1 · 10/11/2022 12:39

I think your dad should first of all show and tell the owner what he found! Why calling the police? It's not forbidden to have secret spaces in your own house after all! .Any details about the TV? I mean how old is the TV? Because that could tell you when this cosy little place was created. And is the TV plugged in and in working order? So there's electricity in this tiny room? Lighting too?

PonyPals · 10/11/2022 09:52

I am so tempted to put up a picture as it's not easy to describe it!
The tv looks like an old analog one.
The house is detached with this garage on the side of it.

Don't be so silly op. As pp said, if the mail or similar picks this up there's a chance the old boy might see his house pictured in the press with all these stupid conspiracies when it could be (and most likely is) completely bloody innocent.

It's not possible that the owner doesn't know.
The sheets look clean and the tv has no dust. Dad is not sure if tv works. It's old...but no dust on it either.
It just looks too tidy to be a forgot room that the owner doesn't know about.
Dad said the air pipe leads outside and is attached to an aircon type unit. So maybe it was used as a little hide out.

fair enough! That makes sense then

whumpthereitis · 10/11/2022 14:04

Would the police seriously be interested in a hidden room, when there’s absolutely nothing to suggest that anything criminal has occurred there? On what basis could they even get a warrant?

whumpthereitis · 10/11/2022 14:08

PonyPals · 10/11/2022 11:33

Because my dad is still working there and doesn't want to report until he finishes.

And then he does report, it’s obvious who has done it, and outraged relatives/friends of the man go on a social media offensive against your father and his company for causing distress to an elderly man.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 10/11/2022 14:08

What exactly are you thinking it is (genuine question, not being snarky!)?

If theres a handle on both sides and no lock then it's not as if someone can be locked in it. Seems a bit odd to report a room in a garage to the police

PonyPals · 09/11/2022 22:42

Haven't read all the posts but will do today!
It's the morning now so will ask dad to see what it is like inside and if anything suspicious

Are you perhaps in Oz/NZ?

Though I don't know if having an innocent "den" (rather than a hidden space for nefarious purposes) in one's garage would be any more or less likely there than here in the UK!

Sorry wrong thread

Mybumlooksbig · 10/11/2022 14:19

Fully invested in this now

OneTC · 10/11/2022 14:20

In all honesty I hope there is consequences for your dad's company. Trust is a very important thing to that kind of business. Sending pics of someone's house about is not on.

Almost willing to think he's having you on, it you're having us on

MistressoftheDarkSide · 10/11/2022 14:22

Damn - got quite intrigued when a PP mentioned a magic book - thought perhaps it was the space where an occultist practised his arts (which does not have to be a bad or sinister thing)….. but having checked the OPs posts it’s just a fictional one. Disappointed 😔

BobbyBobbyBobby · 10/11/2022 14:35

I think it’s an unfinished room. The elderly man is waiting for work to be finished in the garage and then he’s going to stick a Victorian Safe in there. 😎

Doris86 · 10/11/2022 14:37

Let us know what the police say (after they stop laughing) once your Dad has reported it to them.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 10/11/2022 14:38

steppemum · 10/11/2022 08:08

This is astonishing!

Do you have any more information?

No, sorry: that's all he told me.

BobbyBobbyBobby · 10/11/2022 14:40

I think your dad should pretend to leave but sneak back and hide in the room and spend the night there and when he wakes up he might be in another realm or time or even in the body of someone else!

Hoping its nothing sinister and maybe been used to hide an acquaintance (friend/family member) from the authorities/bad acquaintances etc etc

girlmom21 · 10/11/2022 17:12

I don't understand how your dads too shy to ask the man but not shy enough to go nosing around in a space he shouldn't be and taking videos in someone else's property.

He could easily ask if he's replacing the floor in the extra room too.
