To not understand benefits of £7k a month!

Awful story in the paper today (apologies, Daily Mail! But I'm sure it's in others)

Beyond distressing what has happened to the children (and the dogs) and I'm delighted this pair have been jailed.

But what also stood out, was the comment that they received £7000 a month in benefits.

How?

When my DH lost his job during cover and we only had my part time wage to live on, we were told that £1k a month was absolutely fine for a family of 4 to live on and we were entitled to nothing. Zero. Nada. Out of that £1k a month was our £600 mortgage, £200 council tax, £150 gas/electric etc etc. Basically there was no bloody chance we could live on £1k a month. We lost all of our savings and we're still paying back the debt we accrued now.

How do scumbags like this even just get handed that amount of money per month? And moreover, no one is bloody checking up on them clearly. Those poor children.

link

Can someone please enlighten me as to how these even happens/is allowed? What on earth is £7k benefits made up of? Are all families with 7 kids and not working getting £7k a month because if they are I'm sacking off work and popping out a few more children.

Read the article gobsmacked , would love to see a breakdown of that monthly figure by the authorities that dished the obscene amount out.

Many many benefit claimants are also tax payers.

Harrysnippleno3 · 08/11/2022 22:07

Hold on - perfectly law-abiding people have to undergo checks all the time to check if they are paying enough tax - why the hell shouldn’t benefit claimants?

What check? What are you talking about?

I'm a tax payer ffs. I just happened to claim ADP (adult disability payment in Scotland) as well.

I haven't had anyone home visit me to check my tax Confused

LearnerCook · 08/11/2022 22:08

Well well well.....another benefits bashing thread. And your tax money is far more important than the child & animal neglect and abuse the story details.

What a goady thread. Benefit bashing dressed up as faux concern about this awful case.

I'm actually getting really annoyed at you OP, as a disabled person claiming disability benefits that you think I should be subject to home checks and treated like a potential fraud because these disgusting people mistreated their children.

Me too. And whilst I am in no way going to excuse what happened here, the OP is also saying that they committed benefit fraud. There is no suggestion that they have done so or that they were not entitled to the money they recieved - however much it was. They may well have wasted the money, but that is not the same thing. The articles, if one tries to fin some slightly less sensationalised versions, suggest that at least one and possibly both adults here were themselves suffering from mental health problems / learning disabilities. Given the chaotic circumstances, then this would seem very likely.

Yes, some serious issues here - how did this go unnoticed by everyone, from neighbours to school etc. But we do not know those answers. However, there is no cause to turn this into yet another of the disabled-bashing threads about didabled people defrauding the system. Because there is no evidence of that, and that is not what they have been changed with or convicted of.

Can we please stop the continual "disabled people are likley to be benefits cheats and need checking up on" crap? And btw, lots of disabled people - like me - are in work!!!! We don't all claim benefits.

The majority of that £7k was probably for rent as well but nobody ever criticises the landlords - charging extortionate rents and very clearly not inspecting or keeping the property well looked after !

Abouttimemum · 08/11/2022 22:10

It’s nothing short of absolutely ridiculous to get that amount of money in benefits. No wonder some people choose such a lifestyle.

I feel really sorry for people grafting their arses off on low wages and getting nothing.

Tarragon123 · 08/11/2022 22:11

Those poor children! I'd rather have heard more about how things werent picked up and how it was by chance that they were discovered. How does a 7 year old wearing a nappy not raise a concern? Unable to use cutlery? Not knowing what shampoo was?

She's plastered her life all over FB, it's not hard to see she's not disabled (she's a dance instructor for a start)

Gosh - disabled people can't dance! Jeez, this thread reaches a new low point.

Greennetting · 08/11/2022 22:12

OP you appear to think that only people on benefits commit child abuse and that therefore 'checks' on people on benefits would stop it

How about all parents have checks to see that they are not committing child abuse? Because if you are thinking the ability to hold down a job means you cannot be an abuser, as a survivor of child abuse I can tell you you are fucking wrong.

People claiming disability benefits have evidence (letter etc) from their medical specialists/GPs. Precisely who do you think should be doing these 'checks' to make sure people are actually disabled who are better qualified to tell than their actual medical specialists?

If they lived in a private rental that will have been very expensive. A lot of benefits claimants get on paper a huge amount but it’s actually high because their rents are extortionate

Benefit claimants do go through checks. To check they’re entitled to that benefit - not to check what they spend it on.

The taxman doesn’t come to your house to check your cupboards or see how you live day to day to check you’re being honest

Well there’s nothing stopping them deciding to “choose” such a lifestyle. Except all the checks of course.

You’re really that envious of disabled people? Sort yourself out honestly

Aye, they’d be much better off being child abusers instead…

🙄

And who may also be dedicating their lives to raising DC, possibly with challenging behaviour and needs, to become the best they can. The silent majority.

hulahooper2 · 08/11/2022 22:18

It’s shocking for the blameless children and animals . Any working family think about how many children they can afford to feed clothe and support , but they can have 7 and us mugs are paying to support them Benefits should never be more than an average wage , otherwise where’s the incentive to work.

Regularsizedrudy · 08/11/2022 22:18

Yeah fuck those disabled kids, it’s definitely their fault their parents chose to have so many kids, oh and their fault they are disabled. Probably a punishment for some terrible misdeed in a past life. I guess they deserve to starve. 🙄

Re' checks on disability payments.

For the last time...!

If you are claiming disability , and you're genuine, why on earth would you have a problem with a quick visit to check how everything is going say 6 months after your first payment? Is it helping? How are you getting on etc?

I'm self employed and provide my own accounts in order to pay the correct amount of tax and national insurance. I'm perfectly aware at any point there could be a knock on the door and I will be made to prove that what I said i earned (and spent) is actually the case. i have no problem at all with this. And neither should i have a problem as I declare everything I own and it's all fully trackable.

I'm fully aware the vast majority of people claiming will be genuine. So why are people so angry about the idea of someone checking ? If you've nothing to hide, no problem surely?

Also, if you're claiming top rate disability for multiple people in one household, surely that is concern in its own right? How on earth are they coping?

SO many opportunities for so many people/organisations to have flagged this family sooner. So many.

Eh?

You really have no fucking idea.

OhSunnyMorning · 08/11/2022 22:22

Why do you think I should have someone into my home to check I'm not a fucking fraud because I claim a disability benefit? Do you not think the medical evidence I provided it real? Do you think I faked it all? Fuck off

Many do.

I agree it should be checked in person. Too many fruads about.

DanteThunderstone · 08/11/2022 22:23

Sorry not RTFT in full but I expect most of the 7k was rent.

Obviously I don't know why things got so bad for those poor kids (nor why the fuck there were dozens of dogs in one house) but I suspect the wheels fell off for this family in a surprisingly short space of time. It's public record that until a couple of years ago the female defendant was running a dance school.
