To take our 12mo DS to A&E?

Parkingmoan1 · 08/11/2022 19:43

We've already decided he's going so DH is getting ready to take him now but I would appreciate some feedback / WWYD? Also - does this sound familiar to any of you with your DC?

DS is 12mo and has had diarrhoea for the past 4 days. He isn't sleeping properly dispite being absolutely exhausted, I suspect something is hurting him which is stopping him from getting off to / staying asleep.

His temperature was last recorded as 37.7.

He isn't eating or drinking as well as he normally does which is a concern for dehydration. He's such a food baby usually and loves his milk. It appears (atleast to me) that swallowing liquid / food might be causing him some pain so I've asked DH to raise the possibility of tonsillitis. He is salivating much more than usual. I've had to put him back in bibs which we haven't used for months.

I might be way off but it's worth being queried right?

He's crying. Alot. He's usually such a happy boy but he's unrecognisable at the minute. Inconsolable.

So do you think we're doing the right thing taking him to A&E or do I sound like an anxious mum and it doesn't sound that serious to you? I couldn't get him in the doctors today hence the jump to A&E.

I'm going to feel like a massive idiot after all of this worry they come back and say something trivial like teething...

Sounds like teething to me. Give him Calpol

FlissyPaps · 08/11/2022 19:44

I would have rang 111 or out of hours GP first for advice. If they suggested A&E then that’s when I’d go.

Azandme · 08/11/2022 19:45

Out of hours GP, or 111 first.

MolliciousIntent · 08/11/2022 19:46

Are you sure it isn't just teething? Have you tried ibuprofen and anbesol? What did 111 say?

WooWooWinnie · 08/11/2022 19:46

i would go down the OOH GP route myself. A long wait in A&E won’t help.

Charcy · 08/11/2022 19:46

It does sound like teething tbh, mouth pain, dribble and a change in toilet habit.

I think 111 first would have been advisable.

changingroom · 08/11/2022 19:46

I'd say teething. Has he had Calpol?

namechangersunite · 08/11/2022 19:47

The wait in our Paeds a and e last night was 9 hrs, I'd call 111 first to see what they say.

CharlotteFlax · 08/11/2022 19:47

I think you're going to have a miserable night in A&E and the doctors will send you home without an answer really. They'll probably do a fluid challenge on him and maybe test his urine. If there's any chance you could wait and see your GP tomorrow then that would be so much better (I'm not a doctor or nurse but I do work in A&E)

Hai2012 · 08/11/2022 19:48

I would have asked a pharmacist if I couldn't see GP and then 111. I don't think it's really an A&E thing

Pigsinmuck · 08/11/2022 19:48

Is it an accident or an emergency?

Could he wait until the morning to see a GP?

A&E doesn’t sound like the place for a mildly unwell child to me. I wouldn’t take mine with those symptoms. However luckily the NHS is there for everyone and so you will be seen (expect a long wait) by a professional who will hopefully reassure you. Good luck.

Hugasauras · 08/11/2022 19:48
  1. Hours in A&E with a ill baby is not great. Last time we called out-of-hours they gave us a scheduled time to see doc at the hospital.
lilroo87 · 08/11/2022 19:48

Agree that it sounds like teething, with the diarrhoea I'd probably call 111 rather than going A&E.

Eupraxia · 08/11/2022 19:48

I wouldn't go to A&E with the symptoms you describe. It's not an emergency or accident, he sounds ill.

It's most likely teething.

Giraffe888 · 08/11/2022 19:49

I personally wouldn’t take my baby to A&E for that. The wait will be awful. I’d keep on top of calpol & nurofen and call 111 or get a GP appointment tomorrow

Sillystripytail · 08/11/2022 19:49

Surely this is the reason for 111? They'll tell you the best course of action. It does sound like teething though.

BabyGrooverBug · 08/11/2022 19:49

Dial 111, go to a Pharmacist. Both will be way quicker than A and E and if they suggest A and E you have and excuse to be there.

Personally I'd favour the Pharmacist.

Hugasauras · 08/11/2022 19:49

What's he like at the moment? I'd be inclined just to see how he is this evening/overnight and ring GP first thing unless something emergent happens overnight.

snowbellsxox · 08/11/2022 19:51

I would take him yes
Dehydration
Not sleeping (seems in pain)
Not really eating - may need fluids!

You know best at the end of the day, go with your gut

If it's teething fair enough but I've never known it cause all that and to that extreme xx

Beees · 08/11/2022 19:51

It's neither an accident or an emergency so he doesn't need to spend hours waiting in A&E. It sounds like text book teething. Get some anbesol and speak to a pharmacist tomorrow. Just accept tonight is likely to be tough but it won't last long.

Charcy · 08/11/2022 19:51

I've re read again, and tbh I think you're being a bit selfish to go to a&e. His temperature isn't even a high temperature and all symptoms point to teething.
Please reconsider sitting and taking up hospital time, at least call 111 or a pharmacist before doing so.

Cm078 · 08/11/2022 19:51

111 ooh gp. I wouldnt personally go to a & e with this.
Could well be tonsilitis, my ds had it at 11 months. If so all he needs is a gp to check his throat and anti biotics. Be quicker than going through a & e.
Hope hes better soon!

Cantbebotheredwithchores · 08/11/2022 19:51

111 with a GP call back all the way. Not an accident or an emergency.
I rang OOHGP when my little girl had temps of 40, high heart rate, shivering, restless etc given an allocated time slot to see them and she was assessed quickly and given abx for ear infection.
Much better, no waiting around in A&E.
Hope your little one is ok

olympicsrock · 08/11/2022 19:51

Not an A and E job. Give 111 a call and try to see your GP in the next few days

ExtraOnions · 08/11/2022 19:52

My daughter had horrendous diarrhoea when she was teething - it was like battery acid, I kid you not ..bright yellow, and there was not a nappy that would keep it contained. She also did all that drooling as well, I have never been through clothes so quick
