To take our 12mo DS to A&E?

We've already decided he's going so DH is getting ready to take him now but I would appreciate some feedback / WWYD? Also - does this sound familiar to any of you with your DC?

DS is 12mo and has had diarrhoea for the past 4 days. He isn't sleeping properly dispite being absolutely exhausted, I suspect something is hurting him which is stopping him from getting off to / staying asleep.

His temperature was last recorded as 37.7.

He isn't eating or drinking as well as he normally does which is a concern for dehydration. He's such a food baby usually and loves his milk. It appears (atleast to me) that swallowing liquid / food might be causing him some pain so I've asked DH to raise the possibility of tonsillitis. He is salivating much more than usual. I've had to put him back in bibs which we haven't used for months.

I might be way off but it's worth being queried right?

He's crying. Alot. He's usually such a happy boy but he's unrecognisable at the minute. Inconsolable.

So do you think we're doing the right thing taking him to A&E or do I sound like an anxious mum and it doesn't sound that serious to you? I couldn't get him in the doctors today hence the jump to A&E.

I'm going to feel like a massive idiot after all of this worry they come back and say something trivial like teething...

Update: He has bacterial tonsillitis.

He also has multiple teeth coming through so a bit of a double whammy for him and its no wonder he's feeling miserable.

I didn't know this but apparently the immune system is weakened when teething and babies are much more likely to pick something up then.

Prescribed AB's for the tonsillitis, dioralyte to replenish his fluids and recommended anbesol for his gums which may well help the pain of the tonsillitis too.

So glad he's sorted tbh nothing worse and more stressful than having a poorly baby. :(

111 take so long to get back to you. I am in Leeds and a couple months ago it was six hours and I could not get an appointment with our doctors. So I don't blame you just taking him to A&E. We had a walk centre where I used to live which was pretty good but the wait to get seen is mental.

Anyway super glad he will be on the mend soon and, mum and dad can get some sleep x

LOL - I'm glad I gave you a laugh there @Parkingmoan1 😉 😊

purplemama1990 · 09/11/2022 17:18

Glad you got a diagnosis and meds, hopefully he will be on the mend now! Tonsillitis is awful, my little one has hospitalised with it in the past - took him to the GP who actually said we should take him straight to A&E.

Glad you got your child seen and now have a clear diagnosis. Hope he makes a speedy recovery.

You have unfortunately received some ghastly replies amongst the empathic posts

I’ve taken my babies to hospital a couple of times to find they have tonsillitis too. Same as what you describe. The lack of drinking and dehydration is a huge worry when they’re so tiny, and they can’t exactly tell you what’s wrong.

Afterwards I’ve syringed juice & water mix in 5ml doses to get their fluid levels back up. Usually after a dose of Calpol for the pain. They hate it at the time but perk up again fairly soon.

Hope he recovers soon.

Pompomsfantastix · 09/11/2022 20:25

The ABs should work wonders OP, glad you’ve got to the bottom of it and he’s hopefully on the mend x

kateandme · 10/11/2022 02:29

So glad you got it sorted
at that age tonsillitis is awful.weirdly it’s one of my youngest memories because of how bad I suffered. I can remember the little medical centre with that paste green walls.I can remember the dark wood doors with glass in them.and being called through and the tit sticking a wooden log(it as it was a log size☺️)down my throat.I must have been really young because this was before we moved.
woh sorry memory Lane there.
point is glad he’s sorted.you did the right thing all the way through op.
we shouldn’t be having to make such choices.we are because the state of our country.

Oh, poor baby. Tonsillitis is awful. I used get chronic tonsillitis when I was a child and teen years.

I ended up in hospital with tonsillitis when I was late teens. I first went to a GP and prescribed antibiotics (which usually worked) but didn’t recover, continued to get worse. I went back to GP was given 3 days of injections.

To cut a long story short, when I did go to a/e a doctor asked why I didn’t come to the hospital sooner and was a bit cross with me that I hadn’t.

I had to have an IV and they administered antibiotics through that. I continued to get worse and they eventually used a needle and syringe to stick into the cyst on my tonsil to drain it on 2 separate occasions. They kept me in hospital for a few more days until a doctor discharged me.

So, even though the GP didn’t advise me to go to hospital the hospital doctor was of the opinion that I should have come earlier, before my condition had deteriorated as much as it had.

So, sometimes it’s hard to know the best course of action. I thought I was doing the right thing: going to a GP and not being a burden on hospitals. I ended up being in hospital for over a week. Who knows if I had gone earlier I might have recovered quicker and shorter hospital stay.

HotCoffee22 · 10/11/2022 08:23

I ignored my tonsillitis recently too - partly because the NHS website says to give it 4 days and partly because my DH was away for a few days and I couldn’t be bothered with the hassle of taking the kids with me.

4 courses of antibiotics later I got referred as one was massive, turned out I had quinsy!

HotCoffee22 · 10/11/2022 08:23

Is he feeling better today OP?

ImustLearn2Cook · 10/11/2022 10:17

@HotCoffee22 That’s what I had. I called it a cyst on my tonsil but I think it’s actually an abscess filled with pus. That’s why they used a needle and syringe to draw out the pus when antibiotics were not working. He filled 2 syringes the first time and then 2 syringes the second time. Gross but fascinating.

It’s pretty serious when it becomes a quinsy. Did you have a tonsillectomy?

kittensinthekitchen · 10/11/2022 10:22

Yes, I found this out the hard way. My eldest got some sort of infection with each of their first 8 teeth (chest, throat, throat) Was absolutely miserable.

By the way, my previous comment that was deleted was not directed at you.

I hope your kid is feeling better.

No I had two sets of aggressive antibiotics taken concurrently as plan A, tonsillectomy was plan B. There were some concerns it might have been cancer. Fortunately the antibiotics worked.

WimbyAce · 11/11/2022 12:03

Glad he's sorted, awful how you have to jump through hoops though!

ImustLearn2Cook · 11/11/2022 12:15

@Parkingmoan1 Glad your baby boy has antibiotics. Hope he’s feeling much better now.

Madamecastafiore · 11/11/2022 12:21

Watch out, both of my younger ones had tonsils out really young due to recurrent bacterial tonsillitis, if they're prone to it it's a bigger, especially if they're teething and their a bit run down.

Make a note of every time they get it as you may need it to fight to get their tonsils out if it causes ongoing problems.

Mine both had sleep apnea and issues with swallowing from the scarring left by constant infections which made for a miserable few years for both of them.

Good luck. I hope he recovers quickly and doesn't get it again.x
