It’s another car parking one !

I live in a rented property for 2k a month. It is within the M25 area.

My landlord is letting several people park outside the house that do not live here. There is a car park for the town 3 minutes walk away which is not expensive to use. They are not paying rent or tenants and they all come and go at different times as they work nearby in businesses connected to landlord in one way or another.

Now it is winter and it’s pitch black outside the house. I can hear people rumbling around as there is no lighting. It would be difficult for them to see getting in and out of their cars.

I’m currently at home during the day and don’t need all these lights on at astronomic expense.

I don’t want to leave lights on all day for them as my gas/electric is already 300 a month. Do you think it is unreasonable to leave the lights switched off from now until end of January when it’s darkest ?

I am also using battery lights (think candle level lights) in the evening due to medical issues so there is no light through window either. The council would not be responsible for the lighting here.

Your opinions will decide what step I take.

Why is it your responsibility to light the way for random people?

Seekandyeshallfind · 07/11/2022 22:01

Strangers are parking in the driveway of a residential property that you rent or on the public road in front of the property?

Either way I don't understand why it's your responsibility to provide lighting for complete strangers?

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 07/11/2022 22:01

Is it a public road? How can he 'allow' people?

Mumdiva99 · 07/11/2022 22:01

Are you talking about leaving outside lights off? Do you pay for these lights? Why would you pay to light up the parking for some one else? Do you get a discounted rate because of the others parking there? Are they parking on the drive of the property?

I wouldn't pay for that lighting. Unless it was in my contract.

I left work tonight and the car park was pitch black - next time I will take a torch.
Surely these people can use a torch.

PriamFarrl · 07/11/2022 22:04

It’s not your problem to light the way for random people.
I, like many others, grew up in the countryside where there was no street lighting. We all managed to get into our cars.

PriamFarrl · 07/11/2022 22:05

Any why would the lights need to be on all day, you don’t need them during the day.

OnTheBoardwalk · 07/11/2022 22:06

Eh? Do you pay rent for a designated parking space?

GabriellaMontez · 07/11/2022 22:07

Has someone asked you to provide lighting?

Penguinsaregreat · 07/11/2022 22:08

Oh course I wouldn’t light up someone else’s parking. I’d turn all the lights off unless I need them.

Winterisblooming · 07/11/2022 22:09

Thanks for your replies.

it is not my responsibility I don’t think.

it is not on a public road - private land with driveway / parking big enough for about 8-10 cars. The landlord owns the land.

im talking about leaving outside lights off that are attached to the house. They light the whole area. I pay for the lights and council tax for the whole area.

No I get no discount- I’m paying top rate for property.

OP posts:
Shinyandnew1 · 07/11/2022 22:10

Why would you leave your outside lights on? Has someone asked you to?

Lj8893 · 07/11/2022 22:11

Thanks for clarifying a little Op.

I still don’t understand why you need to light the way?

BrieAndChilli · 07/11/2022 22:14

What does your tenancy say? Do you rent the parking area or is it a shared area with other houses etc? If you are renting it entirely then I would be asking for a discount - what if you had rented the property because you had 8 cars yourself?
has anyone asked you to put the lights on? If not why do you think you are expected to have them on?

Winterisblooming · 07/11/2022 22:14

The people (all women) parking for free are complaining it’s very dark. the landlord has not said anything yet but they work in businesses connected to him and a duty of care arises from an employer perspective.

im glad you all think the same as me.

my tenancy is for the whole house and parking area.

Tell them to buy a torch or if they want uou
to keep your lights on they can significantly contribute to your energy bill.

BeetleManiac · 07/11/2022 22:16

I'm struggling to understand the problem. You don't need the outside lights on so just leave them off.

I don't see why you should be concerned about these random people. They could use torches or their phones for light if they need to, but not your problem anyway.

Winterisblooming · 07/11/2022 22:16

It’s just one house all on it’s own.

I have complained about parking- he does nothing

It’s entirely up to the women. If they are going to park somewhere dark then that’s their problem, not yours.

Hang on, so your landlord is renting the outside space to you (if your tenancy is for "the whole house and the carpark") but he's also inviting / charging random people to park there as well? That's not on.

Winterisblooming · 07/11/2022 22:19

Thanks everyone

The lights will be off !! They can use their iPhones and hopefully it will make them sod off and park somewhere else

They might take a hint I don’t want them here !

Lj8893 · 07/11/2022 22:20

I’d start filling the driveway with random old stuff, old bangers, bikes, furniture etc.

dontputitthere · 07/11/2022 22:20

Are they complaining to you? I don't get your responsibility in this saga?

Just turn the lights off. They don't have a contract with you.

And is your rent for the whole parking area? Do you have a designated space? Sorry I really don't get it.

ShopoholicIn · 07/11/2022 22:21

Why are you letting these random people park there. Its your area that you rent, the land lies shouldn't ask others to park there. You have said that you have asked him multiple times but to no avail..
Anyhow, you shouldn't definitely not switch on lights for their convenience.

Winterisblooming · 07/11/2022 22:21

I know it’s not on. I’m trapped.
I’m changing jobs and I can’t move out until I start new job and get income to get new credit check etc
