It’s another car parking one !

I live in a rented property for 2k a month. It is within the M25 area.

My landlord is letting several people park outside the house that do not live here. There is a car park for the town 3 minutes walk away which is not expensive to use. They are not paying rent or tenants and they all come and go at different times as they work nearby in businesses connected to landlord in one way or another.

Now it is winter and it’s pitch black outside the house. I can hear people rumbling around as there is no lighting. It would be difficult for them to see getting in and out of their cars.

I’m currently at home during the day and don’t need all these lights on at astronomic expense.

I don’t want to leave lights on all day for them as my gas/electric is already 300 a month. Do you think it is unreasonable to leave the lights switched off from now until end of January when it’s darkest ?

I am also using battery lights (think candle level lights) in the evening due to medical issues so there is no light through window either. The council would not be responsible for the lighting here.

Your opinions will decide what step I take.

The people (all women) parking for free are complaining it’s very dark. the landlord has not said anything yet but they work in businesses connected to him and a duty of care arises from an employer perspective.

im glad you all think the same as me.

my tenancy is for the whole house and parking area.

In that case, I’d be asking the landlord for a rent reduction. Random people do not have the right to park on your property that you are paying rent for. The LL is a cheeky sod!

Sorry posted too soon. My house and the surrounding area is very dark. I have a head torch I use to light the way. I wouldn't expect someone else to provide light for me.

your landlord should install these

www.amazon.co.uk/Security-Outdoor-270%C2%BAWide-Waterproof-Powered/dp/B083BS5ZDN/

they are excellent and will entirely solve the problem. but he should do it, not you.

GabriellaMontez · 07/11/2022 22:26

Who are they complaining to?

ProFannyTea · 07/11/2022 22:26

If you rent the parking area buy some planters or bollardds and block it off, its yours.

Winterisblooming · 07/11/2022 22:28

He is a sod. He’s actually trying to put up the rent too.

They complain to landlord immediate family.

As soon as I get a new job secured I will move. If ever Rishi gets the bloody budget set and employment market moves again

How does that solve the problem that OP is paying rent and is in a higher council tax band for land she cannot use because her twat landlord has rented or given it out to random mates to park?

Winterisblooming · 07/11/2022 22:32

The landlord is the type of guy to turn up on the doorstep uninvited during working hours or put a note through letterbox with any requests.

If your tenancy includes the parking area how can the LL allow others to park there? Can you charge them a nominal fee to cover cost of lighting?

Brigante9 · 07/11/2022 23:10

Then you should’ve getting the car parking fees or paying less if he’s subletting the parking when your rent covers it. Shocking!
