I’ve been lucky and never stayed somewhere terrible apart from one place.

No one at the front desk for half an hour. I called the number left and no one answered. Knocked on the office door (could hear people) and no one answered.

The room didn’t lock and they pretended not to understand. I had to carry any valuables with me whenever I left.

I noticed Brean sands being mentioned up thread. It's not that bad. We go most years. We rent cheap, immaculately clean accommodation (not pontins 😂)
My DC love it, it's close to beach, funfair, arcades entertainment etc.
We also travel round the Somerset area and visit many places that are too far from home for a day trip but are only an hour or so from there. There are some really nice places not too far away.

The worst holiday was about 15 years ago in a caravan in Newquay Cornwall (parkdean)
We (me, dh, ds1) went with dsis, Bil, nephew.
Torrential rain all week.
We slept in the double bed, kids in other room and dsis and Bil on pull out bed in living room. Every morning the living room stank of the most noxious farts I've ever smelt in my life and if i opened a window or door, sil would shut it straightaway as she was cold.
Dsis refused to do any cooking, washing up, tidying up. Because she was 'on holiday ' so through gritted teeth Dh and I did everything including looking after Dn, changing his nappies too as she couldn't be bothered.
One particularly wet day we were walking round the town and ds needed feeding. As it was pouring with rain we went into a café, I sat down and began feeding him while dh was queuing for drinks, café manager came storming over screaming at me that I couldn't feed my baby there, it was for paying customers and that I had to leave immediately. She grabbed the pushchair and threw it out of the door before I could explain.
One I'll remember forever for the wrong reasons!

Not a holiday but stayed in a dodgy Travelodge in Dudley for business one year. It was a right dive and when I came back I told my employer they had to increase our hotel allowance and it wasn't safe for their employees to have to stay in such awful places, particularly women. No idea if it's still there, it might have improved a lot now, this was in the early Noughties.

I’m going to win this one.

Trigger alert, deals with suicide.

Went on our first family holiday abroad with DP, my DD 16 and our DS.8.

DP came back in a coffin.

Three hours after we arrived in our lovely AirBnb in a village in Crete he’d had a psychotic break and jumped off the balcony. Luckily only I witnessed it as my DC were upstairs at the time.

Although he had catastrophic brain injuries the hospital kept him “alive” in ICU until all his blood levels were zero. That took a week as he’d been self medicating with benzodiazepines, the extent unknown to me at the time.

Tne night before we were due to leave the lights went out in our villa.

half an hour later the doctor rang to tell me he’d died about thirty minutes ago.

That “holiday” took quite some time to recover from.

Jersey, many years ago. It was a special anniversary so we hired a fabulous (and expensive) red topless sports car for a long weekend. We booked a very posh (and expensive) restaurant for lunch, where I had their (expensive) seafood special. By the time we got back to the hotel, I was very, very sick. When I was finally able to stand up (just), we went for a drive in the car. All I could do was sit in the front with a sick bag, while DH drove very, very slowly from beach to beach. Yes, we had the hood down (we had to).

I've never had a problem with seafood before or since. It just had to be that trip.

@HoofWankingSpangleCunt , you do win!

Sorry for your loss

Many years ago, south of France. I went with my exH and two DC.

Our villa was burgled and we lost everything of any value. My ex got drunk and tried to strangle me. The next day other holiday makers saw the bruises round my neck and wanted to get French Police involved, but I didn't know how they would deal with DV and I was worried about my DC realising what had happened.

Jesus hoof
Horrible experience.
My sympathies,

Another vote for Gambia, really intimidating locals, followed you around, constantly harrassing you, wouldn't leave you alone despite repeatedly being firmly requested to do so, trying to steer you away from the path you were on. I couldn't go out alone and I'm confident and street wise here. I feel nervous now just remembering it. The food was universally atrocious in every restaurant we visited, we both had d&v. I was relieved to leave, it was no holiday.

A group holiday to Sunny Beach in Bulgaria. The lady next to me on the plane didn't have a seatbelt. We almost got electrocuted due to dodgy wiring, no one cleaned the pool so it was green and smelly. I almost got attacked by an emu. My friend and I fell down a spiral staircase. One friend got food poisoning. You had to pay to use toilets in bars and restaurants, I went once and didn't have a coin and this little old lady started grabbing me and telling at me, I had to shake her off but was terrified of hurting her. Locals would come up to us with baby crocodiles wanting us to pay to hold them.

We went in 2010 and it was bloody awful!! Really tacky and noisy, and I just didn't feel safe. We had 3yr old blonde haired, blue eyed dd with us and the locals were giving her waaaay too much attention. I literally had her clamped to my side.

Luckily the hotel was amazing so we only ventured out twice.

I'd never to back.....

I visited Sunny beach in the Early 90's as a very blonde little girl. I was hounded by men and women who constantly touched and stroked my skin and hair. My parents hated it

Ting20161987 · 07/11/2022 15:03

Oh and me and brother also got stuck in the hotel lift for almost the whole morning while we waited for the fire service to rescue us

concernedalot · 07/11/2022 15:08

Most holidays i've been on have been awful, probably about 75% of them. They've either been ruined because of terrible accommodation, bad weather, arguments between people i've been with (one ended up in a fist fight), children playing up for the whole duration of it, or being bitten by bugs all week. I don't tend to bother now, it's not worth the money!

Cakecakecheese · 07/11/2022 15:10

A trick that thieves use is to come over to a guy, pretending to be drunk, put their arm around them and be like 'heyyy let's dance' while grabbing their wallet out their pocket. I knew about this trick so when someone tried it on my then husband in Ibiza I snatched the wallet back and the thief sort of shrugged like it was worth a try and wandered off. Another person was about to try it later so I shouted at them.

Egypt 2010 (iberostar makadi bay) all inclusive (only one we have ever done) on paper a very nice posh hotel, lovely pool, nice rooms, beautiful beach -however barbed wire fencing around resort

Decided not to eat at buffet but book for the on site restaurants- first day all good- second day , we all develop food poisoning including our son 11 at time. Lasted the rest of the 8 days. One room- one bathroom- the stuff they have on site at the on site doctors! Had run out and they weren't dues delivery for 5 days. Son lost10lbs and we lived on dry cake and bread and biscuits. We met 4 other families all with the same. First choice refused a refund- now wish I had gone to court. We went to doctors when we got back as none of us were yet ok and we all tested for amoebic dysentry.

A horrible chess pot of a hotel in Side, Turkey. Reviews were awful on TripAdvisor but we were too poor and naive to take heed. The coach driver didn't know where he was going to the transfer was more than an hour longer than it should have been. We paid for a sea view room but we're shown to a tiny cupboard room with no view at all, because there was no window. When we pointed out our booking he said we had to £50 to move. I saw a staff member make fun of a child with a disability. Staff behind the front desk looked like they were on drugs and we were told to f**k off every time we spoke to them. It's closed down now and I can't say I'm surprised.

aoilily · 07/11/2022 15:16

Cess pit, not chess pot!!

@HoofWankingSpangleCunt so sorry to hear this

Bananalanacake · 07/11/2022 15:20

Cork, Ireland the place was lovely, me and DP went there to discuss what to do with my pregnancy, we put off talking about it until the car journey home.

WishfulWanda · 07/11/2022 15:31

After A Levels I went and stayed in a ‘2 bed’ villa with two friends. We didn’t realise that one of the beds was actually the sofa 🙄 Anyway, we tossed a coin and my friend and I ended up in the twin bedroom and our third friend was stuck on the sofa. Trouble was, she brought a different bloke home every night and we had to listen to them shagging all night as we didn’t want to walk in on it 😬 Then, to top it off, when I confronted her, she had a right go at me and we fell out. We landed at the airport and her mate (who had arrived to collect her) came up to me and screamed in my face that I was a cow/bitch etc in front of a plane load of passengers waiting to collect their luggage. This was 3am in the morning. Not fun.

antelopevalley · 07/11/2022 15:33

New York. Hated it.

We usually go to North Wales but last
year we booked a cottage in the lake district to see somewhere different. It was cheap compared to some but it wasn't as close to the main tourist area so we thought that was why it was cheaper.
The cottage was quite basic and not very clean. They allowed dogs so there was dog hair on the carpets despite there being 2 vacuum cleaners. On the first morning I took the embroidery table cloth off the dining table and the table was full of dirt where crumbs etc had gone through the holes in the table cloth. The cloth itself was stuck to the table! The electric shower didn't work so we called the landlord who lived away and was told her caretaker would come and look at it during the day. It was never fixed. When we arrived the windows were open and we closed them the following day when we went out. It was a dull day. The day after it was glorious weather and we still had the windows closed. We went out for the day and did a food shop on the way home. We came back to a living room with about 50 wasps on the window....inside. DH wouldn't go in as he's scared of bugs! We vacuumed them up and thought we'd solved something. When I was putting DS to bed he asked if I'd stay in the room. I dozed a little on the spare bed and was woken by a wasp crawling on the bed! They were getting in through tiny gaps around the door and seemed to be living in the walls as they were flying back and forth outside.Yet another call to the landlord who offered a refund minus the cleaning fee....not sure she realised that her cleaner was shit! We didn't know what to do, it was late, there was no Premier inn/travel lodge availability anywhere so we just had to stay there and sleep as well as we could. As luck would have it early the following morning i looked again for a Premier inn and one was available closer to North Wales so i booked it while everyone was still asleep. We'd booked activities in the lake district that we couldn't get refunds for so we travelled back and did those on some days and then went into North Wales on the other days. We had to leave all the fresh food we'd bought to last for several days in fridge at the cottage as we'd have nowhere to cook it in a Premier inn. We ended up having a fantastic holiday after the bad start. We laugh about it now!

Campsite near Venice. Everything closed at lunchtime and stayed closed for most of the afternoon. Even the football pitch and the playgrounds got patrolled to make sure no one was using them.

Did a trip into Venice but most of the attractive buildings were behind tarpaulin. Underwhelmed by the place. It didn't help that we lived in the Netherlands so canals weren't a novelty.

We went home early. It wasn't a 'bad' holiday just not good and not worth staying to the end.

Multiple shitty holidays mainly due to the pressure I put on myself to plan all the activities and make sure everyone has a good time and cope with moody withdrawn teenagers and unhelpful stroppy husband. This year was particularly bad. I'm taking myself off to a yoga holiday alone next year. It makes me very sad that family holidays have become so tense and fraught especially after the effort I've put in over the years. Going away with friends hasn't worked that well either so I've decided to just go it alone. 😔

Can I come?
