….to get pleasure from something really childish? (lighthearted!)!

It’s raining BUCKETS here….so loads of huge puddles and standing water on the roads out here in t’country. I’m in my late fifties but I just LOVE driving through big puddles and making a huge splash (assuming it’s safe to do so, ie a quiet road, no pedestrians nearby & no front gardens etc to flood by me doing it). Does anyone else get a childish pleasure from doing something you really ought to have grown out of by now?!

I’ve Been away for a few nights.

extreme childish pleasure was had turning the Alexa linked light off and on on the app , whilst chatting to husband who couldn’t work
out why the light was “ playing up “😂

I did eventually tell him

Bopping myself or others on the head with the empty cardboard insert from wrapping paper

InMySpareTime · 07/11/2022 11:58

I like to gesture at automatic doors as if my magic opens them.
Whenever I see shop products with letters on I rearrange them on the shelf so they spell rude words.
Whenever I see sequin fabrics in shops I flip some sequins over to draw boobs or cockenballs.
I like sliding along shiny floors and saying Wheeeeee.
Crunching ice on puddles in winter.
Eating all the chocolate off a Jaffa cake first, then the cake, then placing the Jaffa on my tongue and letting it dissolve.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/11/2022 12:02

I like playing with play dough. I met my colleague and her toddler at soft play last week and yes I had a go, when there were no other children on it. (I don't get the hare for soft play)

squashyhat · 07/11/2022 12:11

There's a great YouTube channel called Rufford Ford which shows drivers attempting (and frequently failing) to drive through a Ford near Newark. Always plenty of onlookers to cheer them on.

I like clearing channels/ moving leaf dams in heavy rain with my wellies to see the water cascading away.

CulturePigeon · 07/11/2022 12:49

You have the secret of a happy life, OP! No need to apologise.

I like opening conker cases to be the first to see the conker (shame their glossy beauty fades though).

Watching ducks/geese/swans for a while to see how they interract - which ones are bullies, which get all the food, so many little dramas etc. Very amusing - they are such characters.

Wearing new shoes and polishing them.

Picking up pristine autumn leaves and pressing them for display. Picking some nice autumn foliage to put in a vase - it looks amazing!

So many more - many of which have already been mentioned.

midgetastic · 07/11/2022 11:12

I like jumping in puddles

That also isn't safe - you can't see the bottom and may break a leg and if there is no one around you might then die or hypothermia

Exactly, look what happened to poor Geraldine in Vicar of Dibley

Oh I love that episode! I was discussing it with a friend only yesterday 😂

Running with the trolley and sliding along a quiet aisle in the supermarket.

mamabear715 · 07/11/2022 13:30

Oh, most of the above! Not running though. Oh no, not THAT. I'd like to be able to..
I do love collecting things, too, pine cones, acorns, birds' feathers, & much to my kids' chagrin, my shoes & socks are ALWAYS the first off if we're near a stream or river.. ;-) Oh, & jumping over waves in the sea! Finding rockpools.. how long have I got?

Me too, I've ended up watching it with lunch now! 😂

coffeepleeease · 07/11/2022 13:42

Oh loads, so many things I think I enjoy as much as if not more than my 6yo DD 😂

Splashing in puddles
Pumpkin picking
Collecting conkers and leaves
Using said conkers and leaves to make pictures
Playing in the snow
Playing with sand
Play doh
Watching certain kids shows (Bluey!!)

I'm sure there's more!

One of the greatest pleasures of theme parks, especially in Florida, are the machines and water guns that allow spectators to squirt water or drop water on riders as they go underneath bridges or otherwise pass by on the ride ... the people look up in surprise and the other riders in the boat laugh etc... Grin many a time some random passing small child has joyfully assisted me in targeting my family as they pass below in the ride boat...
I also enjoy squishing fallen berries underfoot and splashing in puddles when suitably shod.... why not, life is hard. Enjoy simple pleasures

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 07/11/2022 13:45

I like to talk in a deep voice through the long inside cardboard roll when the wrapping paper roll is finished. My favourite phrase is "Luke, I am your father" in a Darth Vader voice. DH likes to get involved in this, once he put the cylinder shaped plastic laundry basket over his head and jumped out at me also pretending to be Darth Vader. (The wrapping paper roles can also be used as light sabres). We are old enough to have grown up DC Blush

Had2Be · 07/11/2022 13:49

I wave and say “hello” to the kangaroos when I cycle past. If other people are around I just lift my hand enough to wiggle my fingers and speak under my breath.

ApocalypseNowt · 07/11/2022 13:58

When I'm shopping with DH I sometimes like to walk off quickly when he's looking at something, then hide from him.

Used to do it all the time when there was a co-op near us. The staff used to help him on occasion "she's on the fruit & veg aisle mate" Grin

MaMisled · 07/11/2022 14:01

On a fast road, someone drove through a huge puddle and soaked DH and I as we put muddy wellies in the boot after a walk. We laughed so much that we sat there for 20 minutes and squealed with delight every time someone drove through the puddle! We filmed it to send to our grown up DC!

darisdet · 07/11/2022 14:02

Ah, TV programmes! I sat and watched a whole episode of Mr Bean cartoon last week.

WarmFunKindStrong · 07/11/2022 14:02

Chewing gum and blowing bubbles ...

emptythelitterbox · 07/11/2022 14:09

Oh yes!
I love all these!
I'm 60 and regularly do these types of things.
Jump in puddles
Cross on the monkey bars
Swing in swings with the DGC
Try out a Hulu hoop in a shop
Rake up leaf piles and jump in them

peonyprincess · 07/11/2022 14:26

These are all fabulous - let's be honest, there's a lot of doom & gloom around atm, so we should all delight in these childish pleasures. I am especially looking forward to the wrapping paper one. Except I point them at the dog like a fencing sword and say "Touche, pussycat" (I think that's from Tom & Jerry, but have been doing it for so long I have forgotten!!)

OP posts:
AShepherdsTale · 07/11/2022 15:54

Aah, the wrapping paper roll!! My late husband used to amuse himself by saying ‘naughty girl’ to our German Shepherd puppy… she used to bounce round in circles trying to find the silly voice😁 Hd also couldn’t resist pretending the hand drill was a gun and making bang-bang noises at me!

Also Y Y to playing in sand - forgot that one - and paddling, jumping waves etc.
Notice how many of these daft pleasures are free..??!

Cheeseandlove · 07/11/2022 15:57

We have a loose slab in our driveway and when I got out the car earlier I stood moving it for a good 2 minutes watching the mud squelch underneath.

also you reminded me of my mum who passed last year. When I was a kid she would purposefully drive through massive puddles for me and I would squeal and giggle!

Gonksmum · 07/11/2022 18:56

Going " woo!" when driving up and down windy country roads and my stomach jumps. Constantly startled by fireworks and fizzy wine/ champagne corks popping leading to a shouted exclamation/ giggle.

I did exactly the same today going down an empty country lane to my physio appt 👍
