To think this is invasive?

We’ve been working on a hybrid basis but we’ve been told that when we work from home now, we must be on camera for the whole shift.
If we disagree, we have to work from the office full time.

AIBU to feel uncomfortable with this?

@antelopevalley - yes it does. And the local environment.

Completely agree

I'm another who agrees, I would be looking for another job personally the company sounds awful.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 06/11/2022 19:29

I wouldn't work for a company that had such little trust in its employees, I think it's totally invasive.

Candidates market right now, I would be looking elsewhere

antelopevalley · 06/11/2022 19:30

And I guarantee no boss who would impose this on staff would be happy to have it happen to them.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 06/11/2022 19:37

I would not be happy about this at all.

But there have been quite a few threads recently about parents working from home whilst looking after babies and toddlers and it's clear lots of employees think it's acceptable to be doing something else instead of / whilst working. So I can see why some employers might go down this route

VeronicaFranklin · 06/11/2022 19:40

So is your employer saying you need to sign into Microsoft teams or whatever every morning and keep your camera on all day for them to watch you? If yes, then that is ridiculous and I'd speak to HR or get a new job.

If you employer is holding an all day meeting and wants you on camera for it then that is fairly reasonable.

I personally don't see how this would even work for your employer unless they plan to pay someone full time to watch people work and even then you could be sat there on camera actually online shopping...not a real measure of productivity so much as a nosy way of keeping an eye on workers. Baffling.

NatalieIsFreezing · 06/11/2022 19:43

What job is this where they can't tell if the work is being done or not?

Darbs76 · 06/11/2022 20:07

antelopevalley · 06/11/2022 19:27

@Darbs76 If the manager is too busy to look then there is no point.
And I am serious. If my workplace introduced this I would get another job and while working my notice would wear a balaclava or scarf.

The point is staff won’t be missing for ages as they don’t know if they are being watched or not.

antelopevalley · 06/11/2022 20:11

If staff are missing for ages, why can a manager not tell they are not doing any work?

If your boss unknowingly was wanking while watching a live feed of you at your desk, that would be sexual harassment.

You seem to equate sexual harassment in the workplace with it being a risk that someone would be wanking over fully clothed people working

Sopharsogood · 07/11/2022 20:02

Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately, if just one person from the team is working from home and the rest of us decide to go into the office, then those of us in the office have to have camera on as well. It’s a :
everyone in the office full time - no camera
1 or more wfh - everyone with camera even those in the office

The whole team isn’t going to agree to work in the office full time as some don’t drive.

I’m looking for another job

That's just weird. Good luck with the job search

Mischance · 07/11/2022 20:26

As long as you are getting the work done, this seems an unreasonable demand.
