DC4 is 18 and at university - on her way home for reading week. She was due to leave Liverpool at 5.45 but due to a broken down train has gone via Manchester and won't arrive in London till after the last train to our town leaves at 12.10.

DH is set to drive to collect her (SatNav currently says 1h45 from here). We live near the s coast but 35 mins on the high speed she'll miss.

She'll be fine I'm sure but WIBU to ask for compensation for DH's petrol? And how do I go about it?

Compensation for a broken down train?

Kinneddar · 04/11/2022 21:44

I'd say you have no chance. The train broke down its just one of those things

OnlyFannys · 04/11/2022 21:45

You can usually claim compensation as the traveller if the train is delayed or cancelled so your dc can but no your husband wont also be able to claim for petrol your dc would need to compensate dg if they claim

mn29 · 04/11/2022 21:45

Petrol money might be reasonable if it was her fault, eg she got to the station late and missed her train. It wasn’t her fault that the train broke down so surely you won’t charge your own student child petrol money?!

Mumwithbaggage · 04/11/2022 21:46

For dh's petrol. It's not her train, one blocking the line. If she was going to be late (even if she could catch the 12.10) it's one thing, but not being able to get home is quite another.

OP posts:
LBFseBrom · 04/11/2022 21:46

Is it worth bothering?

Mumwithbaggage · 04/11/2022 21:48

No, not charging my child!! Charging Avanti. They have provided practically no information. He's headed off now for a four hour round trip and she will have been travelling since 5.30 when she gets home sometime around 2am!

Sorry now realise you mean compensation from the company, not your child! Yes you can put in a request for compensation with the train company and they will refund a % of ticket cost depending on length of delay.

Changingplace · 04/11/2022 21:49

If the train is delayed by a certain amount of time you can claim back on their booking website, I’ve done it a few times, they have records of which trains have been delayed, just put a refund claim in.

Yes, just put a claim in, I’ve done it a few times for delayed/cancelled trains it’s really easy to do.

OnlyFannys · 04/11/2022 21:50

To be very clear tho OP it would be you DD claiming on her ticket and paying you DH towards the petrol, your DH cannot put in a claim for petrol costs, he would look very silly

FatAnneTheDealer · 04/11/2022 21:51

No, you can’t claim. The train co has no contract with you. Your daughter can claim, but only on the basis of her ticket. So if her ticket was Liverpool to London and she couldn’t get to London that day, then she could definitely claim on the basis that they were unable to fulfil their contract. Depends where her ticket was to and whether they could get her there in a reasonable amount of time (With the usual exclusions).

FlissyPaps · 04/11/2022 21:54

YABVU.

Your DC should claim on their ticket, if no alternative transport/solution was offered.

It was your DH’s decision to use his car and his petrol. Nothing to do with the train companies ticket they issued to your DC.

ohidoliketobe · 04/11/2022 21:54

Echoing PPs.
Your DD can claim for her delayed train. It can take weeks. It's up to you if you ask her for petrol money from any refund she's successful with.
Your DH can't claim for petrol.

Mumwithbaggage · 04/11/2022 21:56

DD can have all the money by the way (even though we paid her for the ticket)! It's the fact she will have missed the last connecting train from London and we are about 60 miles from Euston - I will encourage her to claim for petrol. Would be a hotel otherwise. She can keep all of the petrol money!

I started at university in 1982 and we lived in Preston. In fact, for years before that, I travelled to London for instrumental lessons. Not once was my train as rubbish as the trains now.

FlissyPaps · 04/11/2022 22:02

I will encourage her to claim for petrol.

But the petrol was nothing to do with the train company?

Surely she can only claim for the price she paid for the ticket?

Mumwithbaggage · 04/11/2022 22:05

Gosh, just to clarify, I'm only cross on dd's behalf. She's loving university but looking forward to coming home.

ANY compensation she can have, to spend on clothes, tennis racquet, gin, theatre whatever. I kind of assumed that other parents would realise I was just angry on her behalf and not sure how to go about claiming for the petrol for that part of the journey. Just excited to see my baby and cross for her it hasn't gone to plan.

OP posts:
Mumwithbaggage · 04/11/2022 22:07

FlissyPaps there is no other way for her to get back from London tonight (60 miles away) as she'll miss the last connection. Her ticket is right through to our town where she was due to arrive just after 9.

OP posts:
FlissyPaps · 04/11/2022 22:07

What are you on about? 😂

TheTeenageYears · 04/11/2022 22:08

There are delay repay schemes in place for all train operators who repay up to full ticket price depending on how long the delay is. It can all be done online and is generally surprisingly efficient.

LIZS · 04/11/2022 22:10

File a Delay Repay claim (or she may have ticked the box to automatically claim when booking) . Can you find a premier-inn room for her overnight?

Mumwithbaggage · 04/11/2022 22:11

It's very straightforward. A ticket was bought from A to C via B. B to C part of ticket cannot be used as there are no more trains because A to B train was not operating. Train company have failed to keep their part of the contract and there is no way dd can get from B to C. We have had to make alternative arrangements therefore train comany should compensate and pay our costs.

OP posts:
SpamIAm · 04/11/2022 22:11

You can claim a partial refund depending on how much later you arrive than you were supposed to. I've done it once and I remember nothing about it other than it was straightforward.

I think they should also provide taxis to the final destination if they're unable to get you there by train?

LIZS · 04/11/2022 22:14

Trouble is Avanti will likely be different to second train operator. Did she buy a through ticket? There was also supposed to be a strike tomorrow so trains after 6pm this evening were disrupted,

KurriKawari · 04/11/2022 22:15

This thread... OP I've claimed for late or cancelled trains before without issue. Not sure they'd pay for DH petrol cos imagine they started doing that for everyone with the thousands of journeys everyday, they'd very quickly be bankrupt.
