DC4 is 18 and at university - on her way home for reading week. She was due to leave Liverpool at 5.45 but due to a broken down train has gone via Manchester and won't arrive in London till after the last train to our town leaves at 12.10.

DH is set to drive to collect her (SatNav currently says 1h45 from here). We live near the s coast but 35 mins on the high speed she'll miss.

She'll be fine I'm sure but WIBU to ask for compensation for DH's petrol? And how do I go about it?

Unless you have travel insurance, no chance.

Travel insirance is highly unlikely to cover this. For UK travel it's typically a minimum of 2 nights pre-booked accommodation.

I’ve just done this as my train was delayed 1 1/2 hours . Over an hours delay you are entitled to a 50% reduction. Check the train operators website for details. You’re not claiming for petrol as such , just compensation for a delayed or disrupted journey.

It’s called delay repay

When my eldest was in a long distance relationship, this happened often, he wouldn't get back to our home town but would be directed to another train station, where the train company put on taxis to get the passengers home... This would have probably been a option ??... He was always able to claim his ticket price back but not for anything else, not his friends petrol when they drove hours to get him, not the days wage he had lost due to not getting home till 5am.... Sadly this is the risk you run when you travel by Publix transport,,,,delays happen... It's life ..

Mochalatteeyeahyaya · 05/11/2022 10:49

Oh and he never ever travels in the taxi alone...they group the passengers together for obvious reasons, it 2 are going to Glasgow and 4 to Edinburgh, the 2 ho together and the 4 together in a taxi.

feelthebeatfromthetangerine · 05/11/2022 10:59

I'd expect them to put her in a taxi at their cost.

I wouldn't expect them to pay for DH's petrol. You and DD aren't comfortable with her getting a taxi, but that's your choice. She can claim for the ticket, but I'd be surprised if they'd pay for the petrol.

YABU to expect the train company to reimburse you for petrol.

If a train is delayed/cancelled and it means you can't make it to your destination then the train company is obliged to provide some form of transportation to the destination or pay for accommodation overnight until they can put you on a train the following morning. However, if you choose not to use their offered replacement then they will not reimburse you for you doing your own thing.

I understand OP's point entirely. If you miss the 2nd part of your trip because the 1st part failed, miss the connection, you have every right to feel aggrieved.

You may feel aggrieved but the train company only needs to take you as far as the destination for your ticket.

It's very straightforward. A ticket was bought from A to C via B. B to C part of ticket cannot be used as there are no more trains because A to B train was not operating. Train company have failed to keep their part of the contract and there is no way dd can get from B to C. We have had to make alternative arrangements therefore train comany should compensate and pay our costs.

I think that it should have been pursued with the train person when she knew the delay was going to mean she could not get home, if she had a ticket with them to get her home then they have to find a way to do this, usually by taxi or a hired bus if there are a few others in the same predicament.
