Primary train trip to London

Gwdihooooo · 04/11/2022 19:14

Aibu to allow my dd (9) to go on a day trip to London with 60 other kids from her school?

The ratio is 2:8.

My main worry is her getting lost from the group!

Depends where you are! How far away from London?

CherylCrows · 04/11/2022 19:15

what an odd thing to even question

It’s a school trip

HeraldicBlazoning · 04/11/2022 19:16

At 9 you tell her to listen to the adults and stay with the group. Surely.

SpinningFloppa · 04/11/2022 19:17

My kids school always go up to central London but we live in London so totally normal bit odd to be worried about it, are you usually this anxious?

toomuchlaundry · 04/11/2022 19:17

School will do risk assessment

Confrontayshunme · 04/11/2022 19:20

As someone who has filled out the risk assessments just to go down the street to the park with our class, please don't worry. One of the teachers will probably get a stomach ulcer just from worrying about losing a child. It is literally the nightmare most of our staff have regularly.😂

Rockbird · 04/11/2022 19:27

I take children on school trips. We count them until our eyes bleed, I promise. They will be split into groups so the children know who is in their group. Then each group will have an adult. Honestly, she'll be fine.

Zosime · 04/11/2022 19:27

At nine, if she does get separated, she should be capable of approaching a responsible adult and telling them her name and address and the name of her school and asking for help.

When I was about eight, my friend and I got separated from our group on a school trip to the British Museum. We hadn't been paying attention and they'd gone on wthout us. I remember scuttling along among the mummies trying to catch up. (We did catch them in the next room.)

Cumbria. It’ll be a 3hr train journey. Then some time on the tube.

I’m not too worried about the timings as she’ll be with her friends

Is it? We live in the countryside and my dd has only ever been to a city 3 times in her life.

A day in the mountains and I wouldn’t bat an eyelid. But this is so out of my comfort zone.

I’m a teacher myself and have done city trips with kids… but secondary and much fewer

Not anxious at all. I teach outdoor education so adventurous activities with kids is normal for me. This is just out of my comfort zone. I’m trying to gauge my thinking

A risk assessment means shit. Yes useful in court.

Of course you let her go.

mangoallergy · 04/11/2022 19:38

2:8 ratio isn't bad
Normally if it's a farm trip etc. one adult would have a group of 7 or 8.

ChocHotolate · 04/11/2022 19:39

A day trip from Cumbria?
Surly it's more than 3hrs from Cumbria to London?

RedAppleTree · 04/11/2022 19:39

Sounds like a long day for 9 year olds. Are you forced to send them? I wouldn't.

Does your school give them hi viz tabards to wear . Think they are a great idea, as long as two schools with similarly sized children end up walking too close to each other. Someone needs to start making the tabards in funky colours!

the ratio is actually 1: 4 which is very generous, one adult can keep four children in view, and if they double up that is two pairs of eyes on the alert. If they are sensible they will make sure the children have a teacher/helper phone number attached to them somewhere if the worst happens and they wander off so they can be contacted.

Gwdihooooo · 04/11/2022 19:39

Thank you. These replies are helpful. I’m feeling less anxious.

How so? There are many people on here who worry about outdoor resi trips for their kids… which I find odd. But I can explain why

Thank you. I’ll ask the teacher these Qs
