Car insurance for 17yo

AIBU? I have just tried to add my 17yo learner driver to my insurance policy to be told they don't accept U18s and I was to call back when they are 18.

I said I'd look for an insurer who would accept a learner on a policy and I was told, "You'll be lucky to find one of those!"

Also I'll be charged £45 to cancel my policy!

AIBU to think that there must be insurers out there who allow 17yo learners to practise in their parents' car? How on earth can you haters learn to drive otherwise?

Have you had success with this?

TiA

I was able to add my learner dc to my policy with LV.

I did look into insuring them separately but didn’t think you could have 2 separate policies for the one car.

We owned DS's car on paper and had it on the road so it wasn't stood for ages. After DS passed we asked about having two insurance policies on one car and they told us it wasn't allowed.

Direct Line every time.
Added both of mine on as learners. Once they passed their test I added them as additional drivers though that costs more than a learner.
I avoided black box policies as they often have curfews and DS had a part time evening job.
When they got their own cars they found cheaper but I'm still with Direct Line becasue they let you make changes without the £25 admin fee that most insurers charge. So if I want to lend my car to DS when his car is in garage they very often charge zero for a couple of days.

We used covered on demand when my son was learning. It's very straightforward and you keep your own insurance the covered on demand is just for the learner . You just tick the days that the learner will be driving it's very easy to do on your phone .so you only pay for the days they will actually drive..

Just to add...
Veygo, marmalade etc. It's not CAR insurance - it's DRIVER insurance.
The CAR is covered under your own policy.
The DRIVER insurance insures the DRIVER - so if they have an accident it applies. If the car rolls off your drive or is stolen then your car insurance covers it.
You cannot take out a second CAR insurance policy.
But you CAN take out driver insurance!

Also... Amazed at the direct line responses! Is this recent? Perhaps it's my (admittedly quite nice when it was newer but still quite powerful at 10 years old) car! Whatever, they were very open and honest about not being happy adding DD to my policy and the ridiculous cost they would charge me.

I've had to insure learners on my car 3 times, then start their own policies once passed the test, and also periodically add them back to my car.
Never had any problems with Admiral, do it all online.
I encourage them to have an older basic car for the first year but on their own (expensive) policy to start their NCB. Then as the insurance goes down they can improve the car.
'Drive like granny' is the refrain here

Pretty sure you can't have one car insured twice...

If the car got written off while parked for example, you could claim twice...

I don't think so!

Sarahcoggles · 04/11/2022 16:20

I've just done this so my 17 year old can practice in my car, with me present. I couldn't add it to my policy either, so had to take out a separate policy for DS. I shopped around and the cheapest was collingwood.co.uk. You can get policies for 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, a year etc.

I assume if it was written off while parked it would be the fault of a third party

Laffinalltheway · 04/11/2022 16:26

Not if they don't stop and you don't get their details...

Of course you can! As this thread shows. Also those ads where you can insure yourself on a friend's car for hours, days, whatever. My adult children often insure themselves on other people's cars for a weekend away.
What you can't do is claim twice for the same thing.

Ok Collingwood have come back the most competitive (about half the cost of Marmalade and Adrian Flux). Does anyone have a referral code they wouldn't mind sharing, please (both parties get a £10 high street voucher!)? Apparently if you have an existing policy, you can call them and get a referral code. If so, please PM me.

Many thanks all.

When I was learning Arnold Clark had dual control cars you could rent as an alternative to insuring your car.

Lemoncurd · 04/11/2022 23:53

£25 to add our 17 year old learner to our LV policy last week. They said that will also still cover him when he passes his test. Last year we had to notify and pay more when older child passed their test.

onlyjustme · 05/11/2022 08:40

@Laffinalltheway no you can't insure the CAR more than once.
But you can get DRIVER insurance for as many people as you want to be able to drive the car...
