Car insurance for 17yo

InsuranceForU18s · 04/11/2022 15:12

AIBU? I have just tried to add my 17yo learner driver to my insurance policy to be told they don't accept U18s and I was to call back when they are 18.

I said I'd look for an insurer who would accept a learner on a policy and I was told, "You'll be lucky to find one of those!"

Also I'll be charged £45 to cancel my policy!

AIBU to think that there must be insurers out there who allow 17yo learners to practise in their parents' car? How on earth can you haters learn to drive otherwise?

Have you had success with this?

TiA

We took out a policy for DD while learning to drive for around £300 for 6 months I think.
The company was called Adrian Flux

Runworkeatsleeprepeat · 04/11/2022 15:15

I had to move my car insurance to Halifax but they let me add on 17 year old twins as learners. My insurance only went up by about £20 a month. Dreading the cost when the pass though🤦🏻‍♀️

Malbecfan · 04/11/2022 15:17

Of course you can add learners at 17. They can have their own policy at 17 too. The comparison sites should be fine (CtM, GC, MSM etc).

@Runworkeatsleeprepeat I feel your pain! It cost £200 more when DD1 had passed her test than it did to insure her as a learner.

Cookerhood · 04/11/2022 15:18

They can have their own add on insurance. We've used Marmalade & someone else who I forget the name of. You can do it for a week, a month, or whatever. It doesn't affect your no claims bonus of they have an accident.

Is this add on separate to your existing policy (ie with my policy who refuse to insure U18s) or do I need to move the whole thing to Marmalade?

Veygo driver insurance.
My insurance wanted over £1300 to add DD as a learner.
Veygo is £120 for 12 weeks!

Littlewhitecat · 04/11/2022 15:26

I'm with Direct Line and they added DD to my policy as a learner no bother.

onlyjustme · 04/11/2022 15:27

Totally separate policy just for DD to drive.
My own insurance still exists, still valid. Literally just DRIVER insurance for DD to drive my car,

Loachworks · 04/11/2022 15:28

I just stuck with just DC's driving instructor to avoid the hassle and them picking up bad habits. He passed after fifteen lessons first time last month and the cheapest I could find (and that's with a black box) is almost £1800.

onlyjustme · 04/11/2022 15:28

@Littlewhitecat wow!!! It was direct line that wanted the extortionate amount for my DD - they admitted they don't like learner drivers. About 18 months ago.

PeekAtYou · 04/11/2022 15:30

Dd had a separate policy while she was a learner.

It's separate to your own policy. We had one which was on a rolling monthly renewal, which worked well.

TakeTheEgg · 04/11/2022 15:33

Seperate learner policy for my DS 17 with Collingwood @InsuranceForU18s

Mmmmdanone · 04/11/2022 15:35

I used Marmalade for my dd. You can take out a month at a time or more which is a bit cheaper

Cookerhood · 04/11/2022 15:38

Yes, it's separate. Veygo was the other one we used. It means you don't have to have them insured if they are taking a break - for example for holidays, exam time, or whatever.
The real fun & games in terms of costs start when they pass, in my experience!

HungHung · 04/11/2022 15:39

We looked at Marmalade, but in the end, we decided against insurance as DS was having a weekly 2hr lesson. Adding his name to my insurance would have bump up the price by £1k. I added his name on after he passed (in Aug), & it only cost an extra £250. When my insurance is up for renewal in April I will make him the main driver as I only need the car twice weekly.

InsuranceForU18s · 04/11/2022 15:40

Ok, just to clarify (before I rush in and cancel my existing policy and get charged £45 for the privilege...) I keep my policy with Hastings (😡) for the car. That does not change.

I get a learner policy from Adrian Flux, Marmalade or similar for the teen?

Same car insured by 2 drivers with 2 different companies.

Is that correct?

Thanks for all your help!

LV added my DDs very cheaply as learners and when they passed. But when I tried to get them their own insurance when they bought cars after they passed, they give silly quotes so then switched to Admiral.

Notanotherusername4321 · 04/11/2022 15:41

Mine went on my RAC policy as a learner for not much more. Different story once they passed 🙈

what kind of car do you have? Could that be it? If you have a brand new merc they may be less likely to insure a learner than if you have an 07 plate fiesta 😂

icecreamcrackers · 04/11/2022 15:42

You can take out a top up insurance from collinging wood learners. The learner also gets an accerlated 1 years no claims bonus with them.

Yes.

Don't cancel your existing insurance.

Do get additional learner insurance - look at Collingwood too, I found them cheapest.

Yes, exactly that. You keep your insurance they have theirs. We found Veygo and Marmalade to be cheapest. It's much better than having them on your policy, as if they have a claim it won't affect you.

another vote for Admiral once they pass. Cheapest “known brand” insurance for a new driver.

nothing2wear · 04/11/2022 15:46

We used Admiral while they were learners and also once they passed (although was a fair hike in the premium once they had passed)

InsuranceForU18s · 04/11/2022 15:54

Great. Thank you.
