To ask you what the name of this type of tableware is?

Does anyone know what the tableware is called (if indeed it's called anything) which is usually blue sort of intricate drawings on the plates?

I know they used to be given as wedding presents years ago and our one posh aunt only brought them out on special occasions. I hated them at the time (about 40 years ago) as they were fussy and I always felt that you couldn't quite see what you were eating lol.

Now however, I've had a change of heart coupled with a touch of nostalgia. I yearn for a simpler time when the fine china was brought out and the chipped mugs were only used by family. But I can't for the life of me know what to google in order to find them! They may been a common style or they may have been a particular brand?

My one that makes my heart leap is an every day set called blue dawn - actually more green than blue. I see my gran every time I see it.

I love that! This was ours (as in York Castle Museum!)

Oh! That’s my grandparents’ china! Not seen it in many years. It’s lovely to see it.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 04/11/2022 13:25

Just eating my lunch off a willow pattern (as we called them) plate now.

Oblomov22 · 04/11/2022 13:27

Duvet, that's so sweet.

Kiitos · 04/11/2022 13:27

I have bought Willow Pattern in TK Max within the last 2-3 years! I had to have it for the nostalgia

@Dreikanter I've got way too much Spode Blue Italian😳

Not only a full dinner service but tureens, jars, Several serving dishes, 2 massive vases, serving spoons, cake knives, pastry forks, tea towels, table mats, etc BUT use most of it on a daily basis.

I don't see the point of keeping stuff "for best" I bought it all to be used, in fact the dog had her breakfast this morning out of one of the soup bowls😂

Posh doggo!

I only recently discovered that DH used to slide my Spode cereal bowls up and down the countertop, like bar tenders slide whiskey glasses in a Western movie.

Anyway, this thread prompted me to get a couple of replacement dinner plates, which I found on eBay (seconds but unused) for a fraction of the original price.

Kiitos · 04/11/2022 13:28

Edit to add: I think the bowl I bought was a second but it’s not an issue. It wasn’t expensive at all

Just pop this here for my fellow millennials... 😂

I swear we had the entire kitchen decked out in this with a matching border.

Denby midnight blue flower was our every day set as children.

The Smart Set was Noritake Thurston, or something very similar.

Thank you for starting this thread. I have a wave of nostalgia whenever I see my parents "best" china. It is chelsea pattern Pyrex which was a wedding present in the late 60's.

I was wondering what on earth to get them for Christmas but have just found an oblong roaster in that pattern on Etsy. Mum broke hers more than 30 years ago when she decided to defrost the freezer by pouring boiling water into the roaster then putting it in the freezer.

Aw! Your Mum will love it (your Dad probably not so much as he will be not allowed near it).

We had Blue Willow at home too but the posh china was Royal Albert Old Country Roses (which I hate to this day).

Love that Denby Midnight Blue Flower Hibernationsetting

Man! I've now increased the fucking price by posting this thread??

This is why I'm poor. I'm an idiot.

I swear we had the entire kitchen decked out in this with a matching border.

My parents collected stamps from Safeway supermarket and were chuffed to bits when they'd finally got enough for the set. I remember the great unboxing when we got home from collecting it was quite the family event 😆

They immediately began saving up more stamps and bought this set for best...

(If my mum sees this I will have outed myself to her for the second time on a MN thread 😂 - sorry mum for taking the piss)

My (very) late Grandma taught me the rhyme that explains the picture -
Two birds flying high,
A Chinese vessel, sailing by.
A bridge with three men, sometimes four,
A willow tree, hanging o'er.
A Chinese temple, there it stands,
Built upon the river sands.
An apple tree, with apples on,
A crooked fence to end my song.

menopause59 · 04/11/2022 13:42

I have a plate at the back of the cupboard same pattern but in a pinky/purple colour no idea where it has come from though.

Dahliasrule · 04/11/2022 13:43

I had to smile once when rereading ‘Three Men in a Boat’ when the three were sitting in a hostelry and commenting on the Willow Pattern plates saying they would probably be regarded as collectibles in the future. (Or words to that effect).
My mum loved Willow Pattern and was always picking up odd plates. The ones I got from her are on my dining room wall so I can remember her every time I look at them.

I spotted a set of that (is it Midwinter?) in my local charity shop this week, was very tempted! But I have waaay too much china already...

I did end up buying a beautiful plate which I discovered when I got home to be hand-painted Minton from the 1840s, not bad for £4

WhosafraidofVirginiaWoolf · 04/11/2022 13:52

@TheNosehasit Well I have absolutely no one to leave it all to and for that remark you have just been cut out of my will.

Or do I still belong here?😂
