sorry, posting here for traffic.

I had my smear test two weeks ago and I’ve been anxiously awaiting my results.

tonight, i received a text (annoyingly 45 minutes before the practice closed) saying that my results revealed Candida and that a prescription would be sent to my chemist.

Oh, and I should collect a form for my annual blood test (assuming because I take SSR’s).

The text however, made no reference to whether the smear itself was Ok or if anything else came up. I called the surgery (my anxiety wouldnt let me not) and waited on hold for an hour before being cut off. I now have to wait until tomorrow.

Is it likely that this means the smear was OK?

Email them

SerenaTee · 03/11/2022 20:01

I’d assume your test was fine, otherwise they’d have asked you to contact the surgery for an appointment to discuss the results.

Swampthing55 · 03/11/2022 20:03

Sometimes if the thrush is too thick the sample spoils, check tomorrow

Vallmo47 · 03/11/2022 20:04

I also think that’s the only thing they found Op.

Justpondering12 · 03/11/2022 20:05

Thanks all, I did think that too @Swampthing55 but I specifically asked the nurse if all looked well. Surely if the thrush was that bad, she’d have commented? Xx

Done this but doubt I’ll get a response this side of Christmas lol

It's likely there isn't a result in for your smear yet - it usually takes longer to process and you may well find out before your GP surgery

Mummieslncorporated · 03/11/2022 20:09

Two weeks seems very quick for smear results to me. I wouldn't be chasing up till about six weeks has passed.

confusedlots · 03/11/2022 20:09

Smear test results usually take around 6 weeks to come back, where I live they're actually taking a lot longer at the moment. It's very likely your smear test result isn't back yet, but the swab they did at the same time to check for infections has been reported on much quicker

Traisonthewine78 · 03/11/2022 20:10

You have my sympathies. I have mine 3 weeks ago. Today i came home to a letter sent recorded delivery and in the 3 seconds between seeing it and opening it had convinced myself they were sending me a recorded delivery letter because it was bad news. My heart was beating out of my chest. In reality it was Ferrero sending me vouchers for kinder eggs i had to bin due to the salmonella scare 😅

I didn't realise they tested for other stuff with your smear. I'd try not to make any assumptions either way until you actually know. I was told regardless of results they'll come through the post 🤷🏻‍♀️

Justpondering12 · 03/11/2022 20:12

this is helpful, thank you. I had no idea that swabs were also taken. I did think they’d come back quick and to be fair, that’s what’s caused the anxiety. I assumed that meant bad news. It sounds silly I know, but I’ve been worried sick about the results.

This really made me laugh, I’d have thought the exact same!!! Enjoy your chocolate 😂

The smear test changed and now they are actually testing you for HPV, they only test for abnormal cells if you are HPV positive.

MatildaTheCat · 03/11/2022 20:27

I had my smear test results sent to me today. Same letter format I’ve had throughout my adult life. Comes from the screening service, not the GP.

I think the GP has been informed about the Candida in order to offer you treatment ( which the screening service cannot do). Your smear results will follow shortly by letter.

Mine said no HPV was found and therefore no cell analysis was made. All good.

Call your surgery but please don’t panic, it’s actually a sign of an efficient service.

SundayFunde · 03/11/2022 20:28

My smear test results came in letter form as they talk about the HPV result as well.

Lemonlady22 · 03/11/2022 21:08

You may need a repeat smear after the candida is treated. All depends how bad it is.

custardbear · 03/11/2022 21:13

Think yourself lucky here, my GP surgery called me Friday and I got ny message when they'd closed, all they said was they wanted to talk to me about my smear, on voicemail. I was convinced I had cancer and was frantically calling. I am not sure how I got through in the end but a locus called me and told me it was Candida positive - I was bawling because I was so relieved ... think they learnt a lesson that day that such open ended statements cause so much concern. I'm sure you'll be fine and your local hospital latter will arrive soon saying you're fine

OMG I’d have been beside myself too!! Glad to hear that’s all it was, hopefully it’s all mine will be too. Out of interest, how long after that call did you find out that’s all it was? Did you get a letter pretty soon after?

The lab/screening team send your smear results - GP deals with any swabs taken at same time.
If you needed colposcopy etc, the screening team writes - not GP.

Justpondering12 · 04/11/2022 15:56

So I spoke with the GP on the phone just now. I’m also HPV positive with Borderline or low grade dyskaryosis. Absolutely shitting myself. Apparently a letter inviting me in for treatment is on its way?

OP posts:
Wingingit11 · 04/11/2022 16:00

@Justpondering12 - it will be for a colposcopy probably. I’ve had hpv and then that. Mine naturally sorted itself after. Don’t worry

Justpondering12 · 04/11/2022 17:29

thank you @Wingingit11 really trying not to worry.

Fortunately , I have private healthcare through work so before I’ve even received the letter in the post, I’ve managed to get an appointment the week after next with a private hospital. A colleague said their daughter had recently been told she’d have to wait 14 weeks via NHS. That’s so scary!

OP posts:
Wingingit11 · 04/11/2022 17:31

The colposcopy is a bit like a smear but you feel a little more like a hole punch sensation. It’s fine. Try not to stress, I know I thought the worse but it’s v common x

Justpondering12 · 12/11/2022 13:25

I have my appointment on Wednesday and whilst I’ve spent the past week telling everyone I’m fine and I’m not worrying, I’m truly bricking it. What if they say it’s not borderline changes, they’ve found something, they’re concerned and mention a biopsy that I’ll have to wait for the results of. I’ve asked my GP to prescribe some diazepam, is this wise? I’ll take a cab as I’ll not be able to drive….
