To find managing gen z a massive headache

Managinggenzoclock · 03/11/2022 17:01

I’m a millennial and I manage a team of people. Some of them are gen z. It may be individual personalities but these are the things winding me up.. please excuse this rant. Is it just me? I manage people from late teens to early 60s. The younger group are by far the hardest work.

  • Very interested in career progression and pay (not a bad thing but see below)
  • at the same time not being willing to ever (I’m not talking often) work more hours or support a colleague
  • not willing to recognise that anyone knows more than them, even those with decades more experience
  • resisting hierarchical management structures
  • making lots of mistakes (including repeated over and over) but not have the humility of inexperience/ youth which would make this much less annoying
  • trying to patronisingly ‘educate’ people on contentious issues in inappropriate ways.

I think maybe I’m being too nice.

I’m GenX. I don’t think Millennials were anything like as bad as GenZ. They were a bit annoying, but the levels of entitlement and expectation form GenZ is off the scale. They are so unrealistic about working life it’s been hard not to laugh in their faces at times.

Yes, the greengrocer was Gen X so I successfully bewildered him and got the lot. The kicker is that I don't actually like avocados. But I distribute them to the rest of the millennial cabal. Mwa ha ha.

Newsflash: when you make a comment on a public forum, anyone can respond. If you want it to be private, take it to PM (clue is in the name). I was perfectly aware you weren't talking to me but I didn't realise you expected a private conversation on a public forum.

Who are the snowflakes again?

You seem to be getting really upset by my comment. I think you're taking it far too personally. Likewise - if you don't expect a response that you disagree with, maybe this isn't the place for you?

Why not respond to someone else's posts though? Others have posted similar things yet I don't see you being goady with them?

withaspongeandarustyspanner · 06/11/2022 08:43

And great rhetoric, by the way, to just repeat what I've said. How clever.

Must she go through responding to every post so you don’t feel picked on? Sounds a little… snowflakey.

I don't care that she's responding to me, but to insinuate I am the only one, is a bit silly.

withaspongeandarustyspanner · 06/11/2022 08:46

Also, hilarious to be called a snowflake by at least one millennial.

Wow, I really do bewilder you, don't I?

I've responded to plenty of posts on this thread. If you think it's worth replying each time, why can't I? Why are you taking it personally and why are you so annoyed that I might get the last word?

Again...who are the snowflakes?

You personally don't bewilder me. I find you very predictable. And angry.

Hilarious to act like one while accusing others. That was the point.

You appear to have made four separate responses to my last post. Are you really in a position to be lecturing about snowflakes, taking things personally and over-investment?

You're making this personal.

They are particularly whingey! I’m mentoring one and trying to get the message across that no colleague in their 40s + is after life advice from a 24 year old is tough! She’s just so ‘passionate’ about many things that she has to tell us all. On one hand the energy and enthusiasm are great, on the other hand teaching them they have to to walk before they can run is tricky…

ReneBumsWombats · 06/11/2022 08:51

withaspongeandarustyspanner · 06/11/2022 08:49

You're making this personal.

Says the person who insulted an entire generation as snowflakes?

Yum yum. Delicious avocados irony.

withaspongeandarustyspanner · 06/11/2022 08:52

Whitney? No, that's not personal.

I didn't call anyone a snowflake. You introduced that word to the conversation. Not me.

Readabookgroucho · 06/11/2022 08:54

Has anyone seen that Tik Tok video of the Starbucks employee weeping in the stock room ( and making a video for SM) because they had to work an 8 hour shift 2 days in a row??
summed it up for me. And yes I LAUGHED! Thing is though, they may have had a point about staffing levels or whatever but the message is completely lost because they choose to make such pathetic video for all the works to see…

ReneBumsWombats · 06/11/2022 08:54

withaspongeandarustyspanner · 06/11/2022 08:52

Are you contesting? You insulted an entire generation, claimed nobody else should have responded when I made a vaguely humorous response and then did the whole "I'm allowed to reply but if you do, you're just angry and over invested" crap. And you say everyone else is a snowflake?

Dish it out, but...

You said it was funny being called a snowflake by a millennial.

Does implication also bewilder you?

withaspongeandarustyspanner · 06/11/2022 08:59

I said this.

'I came here to say exactly this. As a Gen X myself, I generally find myself bewildered by Millennials and find Gen Z a breath of fresh air by comparison'

Hardly the insult you are claiming it to be.

Bewildered yes - where did I call anyone a snowflake? However you did repeatedly call me one. Just because I disagree with you. You have reminded me that this is a public forum, only it seems that you will accept posts that align with your thinking. You don't seem to like anyone having an alternative opinion - which you then go on to accuse me of. You can't have it both ways.

Don't you remember calling me a snowflake? Scroll back. Have a look.

Rene, this is the hilarious thing. They’re happy to dish it out, but cannot take it back. My mother in law is of the ‘you can’t say anything now, everyone’s so sensitive’ breed, but went mental when somebody told her that her shelves were too low down in her house (seriously). Then was all ‘well I didn’t start it’ when asked to calm down.

You say I'm predictable but I confess that I didn't foresee your mad response. Once you got started, of course I knew what was coming, but I didn't originally expect you to get so enraged over a small joke. I thought it would just bewilder you.

Readabookgroucho · 06/11/2022 09:01

Jesus, can youn2 take this offline and just PM the insults?
