Just went into my bedroom and the temperature is 17 5° C
I think I will be OK but wondering about rest of house with kids in it who are asleep now.
Are you holding out for a bit longer or is it on now?

Thermal vest is swinging into action here.

ShaunaTheSheep · 04/11/2022 18:28

Ours is not on yet. DH is the resister in chief but even he mentioned feeling chilly earlier, so he may crack first, which is unheard of. I just smiled enigmatically and slid back under my heated throw!

girlfriend44 · 04/11/2022 22:23

Not had central heating on yet.

Had the fire on early evening for a few hours then it goes off.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/11/2022 06:18

it was 16 degrees last night
cold hungry and tired
a jumper and a cardigan on,
heating went on for an hour

Yarrawonga · 05/11/2022 08:48

We haven’t used the central heating yet but we have had fires lit, so can’t really say that the heating hasn’t been on.

Blinkingheckythump · 05/11/2022 08:50

When I'm cold.....?

HoppyHorse · 05/11/2022 08:56

My house is 13.5 degrees, I haven't turned the heating on.

FirewomanSam · 05/11/2022 09:01

I think I live in a different world to everyone else! I don’t think I feel the cold particularly but my living room was 19 yesterday and there was a definite chill in the air. Didn’t need to put the heating on but wouldn’t have wanted it much colder, I was wrapped up in a blanket and quite toasty but I could feel the cold air on my nose and in my lungs a little. I’m baffled by all the ‘my home is 16 degrees and it’s far too stuffy’ posts I see here!

purpleme12 · 05/11/2022 09:07

I have put the heating on minimally about 3 times not for long to dry the clothes
Do these people not putting it on all have tumble driers or something??

Hibernationsetting · 05/11/2022 09:08

15C last night meant I put the heating on for one hour. It went up to 19c, I turned the heating off and it’s stayed at 18 since. That’s enough.

Yup.
Temperature feels totally different in nov. The humidity is bringing in chill under the skin.
Same temp in less humid months is ok.

My living room is 19 and I have blanket. 19 in may and no need for a blanket.

Yes this is exactly it I think. 19 on a clear spring day, I’d probably be walking around outside in a t-shirt and enjoying the feel of the sun. 19 indoors this week with its non-stop rain outside just hits differently!

It’s like how the cold in Scotland feels SO cold because of the damp, even if the temperatures don’t even get that low compared with other parts of the world.

Edilemma · 05/11/2022 09:31

Contemplating turning heating on today. Have been enjoying resisting giving profit hungry Shell any more of my hard earned money than necessary but am having to admit that it’s genuinely cold now. Heated throws have got us this far but the house feels damp and cold for the first time this weekend and washing won’t dry! Have never had heating off into November before and frankly am pissed off that anyone has to worry about turning the heating on because of soaring bills - more than ever this year. I’m lucky to never normally worry about it too much but this year I’m furious that the Shell app keeps telling me I should be paying then £385 a month! Last year we paid £115! But for me it’s just galling - I shudder to think of how people are coping for whom the old rates were already expensive.

Our heating will go on, at much lower temperatures than usual but personally if it keeps Shell and the likes profits down and sends a message to the fat cats in their cosy boardroom I think a bit of competitive coldness is in order!

As soon as I can I’m investing in a log burner and solar panels. I’d go totally off grid if I could so I never have to give them any more money every again!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/11/2022 09:33

i am luckily to have an emersion heater so can finish off my washing there
and yesterday i hung clothes on the line
no tumble drier for some years

I miss proper freezing temperatures.
My friends and family visited me in UK few times in winter and it was hilarious! They cane from somewhere with sub zero temps as normal winter stuff to +8 but had to add layers and layers and kept moaning about cold😂
Sub zero is dry and if you have adequate clithes, it's absolutely fine. UK winters are usually dump and that just gets all the way to your bones

MakeItADouble2 · 03/11/2022 00:26

Would you put it on in the day at 17° ?

Mines been on since August, on thermostat if the house goes below 18 it comes on. During the day I turn it up to 20. We both WFH and I have fingerless gloves a hat thermáls and a hot water bottle. I can't wear them on Zoom tho so the house needs to be warm enough

GeorgeorRuth · 05/11/2022 10:06

DH is disabled so fairly immobile so we have heating 'on' , but the thermostat is in the hallway on a central wall and set on 18. Although I can control the times heating is due on I can't vary temperature to change without using the dial daily. It's an old boiler, heating control and thermostat ( council property).
The heating kicked in yesterday as it really was the first day the temperature indoors actually dropped. I sat and worked out that the amount I pay will cover the extra usage.

Yes! I had an American friend who went to study in Scotland and was insisting beforehand that it wouldn’t be ‘that cold’ and she’d be fine because she was used to much lower sub-zero temperatures in her part of the US. She learned pretty quickly that a damp Scottish winter is a very different beast!

Kokapetl · 05/11/2022 10:20

We tend to put ours on when it gets down to about 16, which is when we start to feel cold. The kids are primary school age and don't seem to really mind the cold when they are occupied or in bed.

So far this year, I'm trying to only put it on when really needed which is basically the kids bath time or when they're getting ready in the morning. It's set to 18 but can be made warmer by moving the box to a cold part of the house. We're in the South West of England and it hasn't been very cold here yet.

TimBoothseyes · 05/11/2022 10:53

Now, because the temperature is only reading 17 degrees and I'm cold.

TheFormidableMrsC · 05/11/2022 13:33

I gave in this morning as it was too chilly even for me with my internal radiator. Only half an hour though.

Applesandcarrots · 05/11/2022 13:56

There will be so many people in massive credit with energy companies in April.
A credit which will be spent on getting rid of mould and stuff....

micedontpaint · 05/11/2022 14:00

No. I haven't worked for 40 years to be cold in my own house. I put it on when it is cold, just for a few mins as it's a small house, but we're in debt and it doesn't matter. I'm not living in the cold. They don't have the manpower to penalise everyone who won't or can't pay extortionate prices.

LBFseBrom · 05/11/2022 14:02

I never actually turn mine off, just down to minimum when the weather is good. I turn it up when it's chilly.

IWishItCouldBeChristmasEveryday · 05/11/2022 14:04

No idea about the temperature as we don't use a thermostat. I've been using it every day for about the last week for about an hour in the morning and again in the evening. The house does keep the heat in well but I have Raynauds and really feel the cold and DS has asthma which is triggered by breathing cold air so I'm not having either of us suffering. I do try to keep it off as much as possible but if we're cold we're going to use it.
