Just went into my bedroom and the temperature is 17 5° C
I think I will be OK but wondering about rest of house with kids in it who are asleep now.
Are you holding out for a bit longer or is it on now?

I don't know the temp of the rooms but I'm in Scotland and I've had my heating on for weeks

oopsfellover · 03/11/2022 05:52

I put the heating on if I feel chilly. I don’t have other people to take into account though. I’d certainly put it on if anyone was coming to visit.

Would you put it on in the day at 17° ?

That would depend on which room it was and the humidity.

The wetter the air, the cooler it will feel and the more energy it will take to heat.

humidity sensors are very cheap and well worth having, but generally we have our main room stats set to 17 and halls, bedrooms etc at 15

Raindancer411 · 03/11/2022 06:03

Ours is set to come on when the house gets to 18C. It's an old house and gets cold but so far the weathers been kind!

We are going to just put it on when it comes on or boost it if we are cold. I do have a toddler so I need to keep her warm really.

wibblewobbleboard · 03/11/2022 06:03

I put my heating on during the day when I'm cold. It's never on overnight it goes off at 10pm and on at 6am.

It's set to be on for 2 hours in the morning and come on again at 5pm but if I'm cold in the day I just click it on for an hour.

I don't own a thermometer other than a forehead one so I have no idea what actual temperatures my rooms are at but the heating thermostat is at 18 degrees.

Is anybody else finding the flood of competitive coldness threads quite bizarre this year?

Hugasauras · 03/11/2022 06:06

I have smart radiator valves so I can see what temp each room is via an app. At the moment downstairs is 14-15 degrees so heating has clicked on in kitchen and living room as it's scheduled to get downstairs to 17ish for us all getting up and going downstairs. Upstairs bedrooms are 16-17 currently.

I find 17 fine generally during day as we tend to move about a lot and not sit for long periods. If I was sitting for extended periods I'd probably feel a bit cold at that temp.

RedRiverShore2 · 03/11/2022 06:07

Mine was on yesterday as it was 17, I had it at 19 in the day and 21 for sitting down watching TV in the evening

Yes

wibblewobbleboard · 03/11/2022 06:08

My ex was competitively cold.

(Great phrase)

I am not. And one of the joys of being the boss in my own house is that I can turn the heating on whenever I feel like it. It still makes me feel happy to click the heating on. Content. It's hard to describe but after 20 years of abuse, and being so cold I had chilblains I will not be cold. Nor let my children be cold.

They are adults now and they know to put a jumper on and fluffy socks but if we are cold ( me or them) then one of us will just click the heating on.

I promised myself when I left him I would never again go hungry and I would never be cold.

Teeshirt · 03/11/2022 06:14

I would never have heating on at night, no matter the temperature. I’ve no idea of the temperature in the daytime, but it’s not cold enough to have heating on at all. I am thinking of getting a thermometer, because I’m a bit curious to find out.

Alexalee · 03/11/2022 06:35

Our hive is set to a minimum of 16. So if it drops below this the heating comes on. Sometimes that is overnight, but only if it's below freezing outside. When we are home the thermostat is set to 18.5. Most it's been on for is about 2 hours a day sp far, although most days not come on at all so far.

Allsnotwell · 03/11/2022 06:37

What I find more bizarre is those who’ve never had to think about hearing before now - permanent jd it on for years and suddenly are unable to consider alternatives.
I never had heating bar a small electrical fire growing up and we had dressing gowns slippers warm socks blankets to keep us warm. We had ice in the bedroom windows - we had quick showers in the evenings and never washed our hair in the mornings as we’d freeze. Hairdryers weren’t really the done thing either.

I don’t thinks there’s anything wrong with people now sharing their tips on how to keep warm for free or next to nothing - what is wrong is all the millions of wasted heating that’s been going on for years.

rainbowandglitter · 03/11/2022 06:45

We all run warm in our house so we've had no heating on yet and haven't even considered it. Our rooms are currently showing 16.5.

Nowheretoogo · 03/11/2022 06:46

My house was 17 this morning, the heating went on as it’s freezing,17 in a newer house feels different to 17 in a old house.

Legallypinkish · 03/11/2022 06:46

No thermostat so I’d just put it on if I was cold. It has been cold enough for heating anyway but I’ve put it on for the odd hour here and there to take the chill off and dry the morning towels. We’ve never had the heating on at night regardless of how cold it gets.

Yes mines on.Set my thermostat at 17 for now There's competitive "who can be comfortable at the lowest temp" on mumsnet at the moment.
To me , the whole point of cental heating is you don't have to dress for the outdoors indoors.

EtonMusk · 03/11/2022 06:51

I'm not particularly cold in the house yet and determined to hold out as long as I can.... it's been pretty mild here in London.

BUT we've had a lot of rain in the last few days and I can feel the place getting damper - that will be what makes me turn it on in the end.

They happen every year.

SeasonaIVag · 03/11/2022 06:53

16c is our tipping point but we have electric blankets on our beds and tend to cosy up at night anyway

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 03/11/2022 06:53

Mines just clicked on at 17 (SE). It’ll go off again at 18. I not actually cold but live in a rickerty old Georgian house - damp loves to live here and it’s chucking it down right now, so I don’t mind for the hour or so it’ll be on.

WFH and it’ll be off all day probably. Layers, thermals and proper Ugg boots do the trick.

Indoctro · 03/11/2022 06:55

We put the log burner on which heats whole downstairs and a hood bit of upstairs when it's below 20 degrees.

So we have had it on most of October.

If I was paying for electric heating I might not be so generous

It also drys our clothes as we aren't using tumble dryer

Lcb123 · 03/11/2022 06:55

I’ve never put the heating on overnight - i sleep much better in a cool room. Just add blankets, clothes, hot water bottle

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/11/2022 06:56

Ours is set to 18 during the day - always has been, not just these days - goes off if we go out. Turned off overnight. I hate being cold and I am perfect at 18.

Crackof · 03/11/2022 07:00

I've had an hour of heating three or four times in the last week, when it's been cool and very rainy. It's partly because my son's been a bit ill since his D of E expedition in half term. The house is about 16° so it's very doable with warm clothes etc and is mostly psychological & about morale at this point.

I don't expect to have daily heating for a few weeks yet.
