Just went into my bedroom and the temperature is 17 5° C
I think I will be OK but wondering about rest of house with kids in it who are asleep now.
Are you holding out for a bit longer or is it on now?

We have a thermostat on the ground and middle floors saying 19 but it was cold in DS's room this morning on the top floor so I think that's why he was waking at 5. No idea what the temp is up there but we'll start doing an hour at about 4am.

KangarooKenny · 03/11/2022 07:05

I don’t have a thermometer in every room, so don’t know how cold it is. I put it on for an hour if it feels cold and damp.

Is anybody else finding the flood of competitive coldness threads quite bizarre this year?

Actually nothing to do with competitiveness but a reference point. I have always put the heating on whenever I wanted but this year, we are trying to be more careful.
I feel the cold more than my family but can't justify putting it on just for me.
However 17 ° c is lower than I'd like to put on.

What I find more bizarre is those who’ve never had to think about hearing before now - permanent jd it on for years and suddenly are unable to consider alternatives.
I never had heating bar a small electrical fire growing up and we had dressing gowns slippers warm socks blankets to keep us warm. We had ice in the bedroom windows - we had quick showers in the evenings and never washed our hair in the mornings as we’d freeze. Hairdryers weren’t really the done thing either.

I don’t thinks there’s anything wrong with people now sharing their tips on how to keep warm for free or next to nothing - what is wrong is all the millions of wasted heating that’s been going on for years.

Ah, the glory days.

BooksAndHooks · 03/11/2022 07:11

We never have heating on at night. 17 is fine when you are in bed under covers even for children. 16-18 is ideal bedroom temperature.

Ours won’t be going on unless it goes below 16 and we have already used blankets, jumpers, hot water bottles and still feel cold.

MrsSirusBlack · 03/11/2022 07:13

@Rainbowcat99 totally weird

AtomicBlondeRose · 03/11/2022 07:14

I bought two small room thermometers out of interest more than anything. In this house 17 is absolutely fine. Anything down to 15 is manageable with jumpers and blankets. When it gets to 14 you can see your breath! (Not sure how that works scientifically but it’s true!) That’s when I’ve put the fire or heating on. Only happened twice this year so far. We are not particularly cold people though and I won’t take complaints of coldness from anyone not wearing a jumper or dressing gown and slippers or fluffy socks.

TheChosenTwo · 03/11/2022 07:17

We have underfloor heating and each room can be individually controlled so each room has its own thermostat. In my mums house there is just one thermostat to control the entire house so it’s harder to pinpoint the actual temperature of each room.
My bedroom is currently 20 degrees with no heating, I don’t want my room any warmer than this. However downstairs at 20 I would want heating on, it’s timed to come on for 2 hours downstairs while everyone is up and about getting ready and then after that it comes on downstairs in any room that drops below 20.
Not overnight though.

UmbilicusProfundus · 03/11/2022 07:18

The Thermostat-Deniers are taking the competitive coldness to a new low…

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 03/11/2022 07:18

Interesting that ppl often site young children as a reason for heating at night. When mine were small the advice was bedroom for babies should be 16-18 Deg. 16 Deg feels quite cold.

I'd happily still have mine off as I hate being too hot but house is old and I've spent thousands on not having it damp. Goes on about an hour and/pm plus log fire if we're sat downstairs in eve. Been the same for years .

knittingaddict · 03/11/2022 07:19

Our daytime heating is set to 19 degrees and it hasn't really come on yet. Maybe a couple of times for an hour or so. Our house seems to be well insulated and I think that's helping. We did have the gas fire on yesterday evening because it felt a bit chilly.

The one issue I'm having is that towels aren't drying. Might need to find a solution to that.

knittingaddict · 03/11/2022 07:22

Oh and we never have the heating on overnight. That would be hell for me. We have the bedroom windows open and now that temperatures have dropped I'm sleeping so much better.

FamilyTreeBuilder · 03/11/2022 07:22

Overnight? Never. We live in Scotland and the thermostat is set to 13c overnight and always has been, between 10pm and 7am. It never ever kicks in overnight, not even on those super cold nights when it's -10c. You're asleep in bed, you don't need a heated house during those hours.

I am not getting involved in the competition about who can be the coldest during the day and who can live wearing the most blankets as I'd rather cut spending on everything else before being cold and miserable.

Applesandcarrots · 03/11/2022 07:26

You put heating on when you feel you want/need to put heating on and not when mumsnet and their competitive heating version of MN chicken says it's ok.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 03/11/2022 07:27

It’s 16 degrees on the living room thermostat and 14 in our bedroom which is in the roof space. We’d usually have it on now at about 20° and 9° at night (so it doesn’t usually come on). It’s tolerable at the moment but our washing isn’t drying very well.

luxxlisbon · 03/11/2022 07:28

If I felt cold or it was particularly wet I would but it on. I never put it on overnight, I don’t think that’s particularly common. You

mizu · 03/11/2022 07:29

Was just thinking the same as last poster! 16 here but washing is not drying very well and I may well have to pop the heating on for a bit later on after work.

Grin Or start yet another competitive heating thread.
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 03/11/2022 07:34

I always thought it was "dangerous" to have your house sitting at less than 14 degrees for things like damp/mould? Our thermostat is set at 14.5 continuously, so never comes on - but would if we went below that.

I've just put it to 18deg between 4pm and 7pm for the colder darker evenings, started yesterday.

XmasElf10 · 03/11/2022 07:34

I wfh and my heating is set to come on in the house at 18.5oC during the day. Between 10pm and 5am it is set to off. At the moment it’s coming on in the morning normally before I get up. I also have a log burner and I lit the fire last night as it was so chilly and yucky. During the day I wear a jumper, wooly socks and have a blanket in my office to go over my lap.

bananaboats · 03/11/2022 07:35

I've no idea what the temperature is in my house, I also didn't know this was a thing til I saw it on here! I just put it on when it feels cold but never through the day or overnight.

YellowTreeHouse · 03/11/2022 07:36

Months ago. House is always at a minimum of 22.

Athenen0ctua · 03/11/2022 07:40

I set mine to 16, it isn't on the timer yet as DS is still leaving windows open, but I've put it on for an hour after work the last two days. I like it cooler at night as I sleep better in a cool room.

CakeCrumbs44 · 03/11/2022 07:40

Our thermostat seems to run hot. I turn it on of I feel cold, which is usually when it reads about 19 or below.

reluctantbrit · 03/11/2022 07:42

During the day the thermostat is at 20 from 5am until 8pm, then 18 until 10pm, but more often than not the heating only got on first thing in the morning as it was still far too warm until the last couple of days.

During the night it is set to go on if it is 12 degrees but it needs to be very cold (freezing with minus 5-8) before that happens.

I don't mind if it is a bit cool but the recent damp air outside made it without the heating uncomfortable.
