Anyone else want to scream 😱 about prices

Anyone else feel like screaming 😱. The smart meter is now the enemy. I'm constantly topping up the meter. Yes it's prepayment they won't change it I've tried and tried. The budget just keeps getting tighter. It's hard to find cheap food no offers things constantly out of stock. You need a bank loan for just to buy toliet roll 🙄 I don't have the heating on constantly I try to just heat one room with a heater. Radiators are barely on an hour here and there to keep away damp. Dryer needs to be used in in emergency since the house is colder so clothes aren't drying properly. I use an airer and it's constantly raining and windy to use the washing line. Food budget is through the roof food is smaller and more expensive and always out of stock honestly what a joke.

Yanbu. My DD's favourite budget cheese & tom pizza went up from £1 to £1.50 this week.
We've probably had cheap food for too long but a 50% increase is quite a hit.

LakieLady · 02/11/2022 18:32

YANBU.

Every time I go shopping, I see at least one price increase that has me properly shocked.

Yesterday it was Branston baked beans, 90p a tin, in Sainsburys. Nearly £1 for a tin of beans, ffs? I know there are cheaper brands, but it's still an absurd amount of money.

listsandbudgets · 02/11/2022 18:36

Our local co-op has always been quite expensive but yesterday I went to buy a can of heinz tomato soup and put it back on the shelf. It was £1.55!

Things were creeping up slowly now it's obvious every time we go shopping

ofwarren · 02/11/2022 18:38

It's so hard isn't it.
I've turned to the Just Essential yellow stuff from Asda. I can't really afford to buy other things.

Janedoe82 · 02/11/2022 18:39

I have went back to basics- traditional type stuff from the butchers and then baked potatoes with it and some in season vegetables. Kids weren’t too impressed to begin with but ok now.

Janedoe82 · 02/11/2022 18:41

ofwarren Can you afford a meat deal type thing from butchers? Ours do packs for say £25 and enough for something each night for a week for three of us? Then potatoes/ rice/ wraps?

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 02/11/2022 18:41

Yeah me too, it's every single time I go in a shop now. So frustrating, especially when you're trying to eat healthily. The prices are getting out of hand

Possibly, I'll have a look.

TwoMonthsOff · 02/11/2022 18:46

I can’t believe how much everything is increasing some things are almost double the price it’s shocking
but some things are a bit more stable like loaves, it seems to be milk, some tinned goods and sauces like tomato ketchup and pet food

Nectarpeach · 02/11/2022 18:46

Have you received the government energy payment? Ours is credited to our smart meter on the 1st and lasts well over a month, we haven't had to top it up since September

Emmamoo89 · 02/11/2022 18:46

It's getting ridiculous. Baby wipes gone up 50p now £7.50 pack of 12

Nowheretoogo · 02/11/2022 18:50

I think supermarkets are taking the piss, they don’t need to hike the prices like they are doing, popular basic things go out of stock then come back 50p+ more expensive!

MummyGummy · 02/11/2022 18:51

I wonder how much price increases are genuinely down to availability/fuel/energy costs and how much supermarkets are taking advantage of the ‘cost of living crisis’ to hike their prices.

We’ve already seen record profits for oil producers, interesting to see if supermarkets post the same.

That's why we used Muslin cloths and flannels. Wipes were really expensive in the 80's/90's. We'd put them into soak, then boil the cloths weekly in bicarb/ soda crystals.

They will have increased sales because many now shop rather than go out to eat.

Businesses don't have energy caps so I am not that surprise at the price increases. It snowballs from grower through all the processes and travel to the customer.

They actually held prices of some things ok for longer than much if wholesale to ithers managed .

miceonabranch · 02/11/2022 18:57

Meat has gone up a lot and we can't really afford it now. We just have a small meat pie each and a packet of bacon each week. We used to eat pork, beef and salmon fillets, but have cut those out. I suppose it's better for the environment.

Ineverwannabelikeyou · 02/11/2022 18:59

It's shocking, I too will be interested to see if supermarkets make record profits. Assume they will. Something has to give surely?

BrutusMcDogface · 02/11/2022 19:00

My dp bought, for the first time in his life, own brand ketchup because the Heinz was so ridiculously expensive.

All prices are going up and it’s scary. Will they plateau and then go down again?!

Hereandgoneagain · 02/11/2022 19:07

my local butcher’s prices have gone through the roof recently. Rump steak was £22 per kilo yesterday. Even braising steak was almost £14 a kilo.

lightisnotwhite · 02/11/2022 19:13

Food has been really cheap for a long time to be fair. Carrots and potatoes seem to have been the same price since the 90’s. Chicken has been really cheap - a whole chicken costing the same price as a sandwich meal deal
I am concerned about things like loo roll, washing powder and butter which are big dents in my small budget.
Now I’m on my own in the house I really have to think whether it’s worth cooking from scratch or a buying cheap crap if I fancy something with lots of ingredients like lasagne.

Blankscreen · 02/11/2022 19:18

Yep I have noticed the following:-

Seriously spreadable cheese £1.85 a small pot.

Bovril £4.20 a jar

Robinsons squash £1.75 for a small bottle. All the other squash seems to be double concentrate which we don't like.

Heinz ketchup£3.60 it was a big bottle of reduced sugar and salt but still.

Heinz beinz with sausages £1.75 a tin in Morrisons.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 02/11/2022 19:18

I used to shop for the 5 of us for between £60‐£100 depending on how much the toiletries needed stocking up..

This week its £135, the same comparable shop last week was £107

I'm just wondering how much longer we can cope with this before we break. Our mortgage is going to sky rocket next year, I just dont know what to do to fix this.

The BoE seem determined to make everyone poor, and we fall in that middle JAM section of society aka Just About Managing. So no real help either. With our income we shouldn't be scared to switch the heating on 😔

Suzi888 · 02/11/2022 19:19

I would invest in a heated throw, I use one for work and it’s lovely.
Do you like chilli, curry? dishes that can be made in bulk and frozen.

RagzRebooted · 02/11/2022 19:19

Doing my online asda order earlier, butter was £2.15! I remember being upset when it went over £1 many years ago. But I swear it was under £1.50 a year ago.
