Anyone else want to scream 😱 about prices

Anyone else feel like screaming 😱. The smart meter is now the enemy. I'm constantly topping up the meter. Yes it's prepayment they won't change it I've tried and tried. The budget just keeps getting tighter. It's hard to find cheap food no offers things constantly out of stock. You need a bank loan for just to buy toliet roll 🙄 I don't have the heating on constantly I try to just heat one room with a heater. Radiators are barely on an hour here and there to keep away damp. Dryer needs to be used in in emergency since the house is colder so clothes aren't drying properly. I use an airer and it's constantly raining and windy to use the washing line. Food budget is through the roof food is smaller and more expensive and always out of stock honestly what a joke.

This is totally random but on wet days I peg an old paddling pool over the washing line, hang the washing on hangers and they tend to dry pretty well. It only works if there is a slight wind and not crazy rains. Just keep an eye on the washing for pooling of water in the paddling pool. I agree though things are crazy expensive now.

Have you received the government energy payment? Ours is credited to our smart meter on the 1st and lasts well over a month, we haven't had to top it up since September

Wow. I had 120 on my metre 2.5 weeks ago and now I'm in the emergency. It's only a 1 bed flat aswell. I don't understand.

It's so hard isn't it.
I've turned to the Just Essential yellow stuff from Asda. I can't really afford to buy other things.

Its always out of stock too

Untitledsquatboulder · 02/11/2022 20:51

Yes/no.

The world is full of people and they all want to eat. It's a bit difficult to feel that others must go without so we can eat cheaply.

That's true. I did an online shop today and loads of it was out of stock.

BlooberryBiskits · 02/11/2022 20:54

@Fundays12 : this is a great idea

My parents had a gap along side of house (like a side return) - they put a couple of brackets up & put a sheet of transparent corrugated plastic to make a ‘roof’ (like a mini carport) & we dried under that in the winter…

I don’t have a side return unfortunately but may do similar in my own garden by suspending a tarp or something

Yeah I’ve noticed Asda’s price creeping up, the cheese used to be 2 for £3, it’s now 2 for £4.50! They've extended their 10% off for blue light card until NYE which is good though.

I don't resent police and front line NHS and firefighters etc getting the blue light discount at Asda, of course they should if that's what the scheme is for, but they do need to tighten their criteria a bit, I think or extend a discount to all public sector front line people. We are teachers and don't get anything (obvs) as not entitled to the card, but all of husbands family work as admin in the NHS and get it. No equivalent scheme for teachers/private care workers etc. I get why people are taking them up on their offer, I would too, but it seems a bit off how broad the criteria is.

My basic shop has gone up by about £40 a week and that’s using lots of own brand things.

The dog food for example has increased from £14-£18 for the tins and £20-£26 for the bag. The cat food has increased £2 a box, thats roughly a £10 increase per week on pet food alone!

I have no idea how I will afford it if my mortgage goes up.

Have you tried Tails? It's really good quality and so much cheaper. You have to order it online and they deliver it, and the food is customised to your dog's weight, age and flavour preferences.

I said I couldn't be arsed with it, and preferred to buy it from the shop. Then DM switched and persuaded me to give it a go and honestly, it's brilliant.

They do wet food and dry food, but the dry food is complete so you don't have to buy the wet food. There's no contract or tie-in, and their customer service is brilliant. You tell them the flavours that your dog likes and they create a custom recipe. If your dog doesn't like it, they'll change it. You manage it all online so you can change delivery dates or what you want to order whenever you want. Honestly, can't praise them enough.

`Both my dog and DM's dog have had much better poos since switching as well! It's really good quality.

I've actually set my Tails account up so I get enough to last me a couple of months at a time. I buy a mixture of wet and dry food. I've saved a ton by switching to Tails and my dog's tummy seems to be better too.

Just to say I'm not on commission and I don't work for Tails 😅I've just been really pleased with them, and it's cheaper. There's not many wins out there at the moment so just wanted to share this one!

It's getting ridiculous. Baby wipes gone up 50p now £7.50 pack of 12

I bought reusable cheeky wipes with baby number 3. He is now 3 and they are still going strong as hand wipes etc plus not rash or environmental waste associated with them. You can make them yourself though by cutting up an old towel into small clothes and sewing the edges and just put water on them. To wash you can soak in napisam in a tub and wash at a 30 wash minimum. It saved me a fortune long term.

Well as long as you lot are ok it’s all good isn’t it? Fucks sake

Mezmer · 02/11/2022 20:43

My food shop is still £80 per week for four and my kids are teenagers. It is still possible to budget.

^ I find this really surprising… and I am a vegetarian! @Mezmer : what are you all eating, and is this food only or also loo roll/soap/cleaning stuff?

EngTech · 02/11/2022 21:01

People will vote with their wallets and the expensive stuff sales will not sell.

The food manufacturers will adapt to demand but prices won’t drop for the foreseeable future 😔

*And yet, it’s Rishi and Jeremy who keep complaining they are going to have to make ‘difficult decisions’.

To me, a difficult decision is deciding whether to heat or eat.*

They mean they are going to make difficult decisions for you - they'll be grand!

I can't even watch the news anymore, it makes me so fucking angry.

Butter seems to be cheapest at M&S at the moment - £1.75. It was the other day anyway….

Yes and Costco

I have went back to basics- traditional type stuff from the butchers and then baked potatoes with it and some in season vegetables. Kids weren’t too impressed to begin with but ok now.

This is a really healthy way of eating. We should all be doing this :)

BetterBeCarefulBoysYouJustMightSetTheWorldOnFire · 02/11/2022 21:15

Thanks @MOTY1995 we are members and use their prepaid debit card for our food shop (you get 2.5% and 5% cash back at a couple of supermarkets) but it's not as decent as 10% off everything in Asda that my part-time-admin-from-home-NHS-working MIL gets for doing a job roughly 10% as "front line" as DHs (senior leader in a large secondary school).

I'll stop moaning about it now though, thanks for the tip!

Bestcatmum · 02/11/2022 21:16

I dont eat meat and I don't drink or smoke. Making veggie food can be very very cheap. I've been experimenting with wartime recipes. Trouble is kids today won't eat the kind of food we ate as children in the 60s. Their tastes have changed. I cooked for some friends kids recently as a trial with their mum to see if they would eat home cooked vegetarian food and none of them would. They wanted ready made supermarket food which she can't afford any more.

usernotfound0000 · 02/11/2022 21:17

I don't want to preach to the converted, and I realise it isn't possible for everyone but honestly get to Aldi if you can. I am not recognising the price hikes that everyone mentions. Some things have definitely increased but I'm still able to get food for 4 of us for around £80 a week. Last week, there was 4 things I couldn't get so went to Morrisons and those 4 things cost me £11! I'd bought a trolley full for £65 in Aldi. I used to be a slave to the brands but honestly, sauces, soups and beans etc are just as good and a fraction of the cost of Heinz.

katrinaf · 02/11/2022 21:24

@BetterBeCarefulBoysYouJustMightSetTheWorldOnFire

Totally agree with you I know a couple who are both accountants in the nhs worked from home all through lockdown never seen any kind of front line ! Massive house expensive cars etc and they get all the blue light discounts oh and access to a company shop where they can buy discounted food. Also know people working behind the scenes in police who are getting the same. Should be front line only !!!

NameChangeForARaisin · 02/11/2022 21:33

It's ridiculous isn't it. DH and I both have degrees and decent jobs and we are struggling due to mortgage and fuel costs, we are also supporting 2 uni students.
We have bought all sorts of seeds (£1a packet at Mr Fothergills) and are aiming to seriously grow some of our own food next year. We already grow potatoes, tomatoes, chilli's, squash and runner beans but next year we are digging up the lawn and turning it into a veg patch.
